Ubuntu :: Why Huawei E220 Cannot Be Used In Lucid
Jun 19, 2010
I have two laptops, all using Ubuntu Lucid. Just now I tried using a USB Modem Huawei E220 in both but was not detected as a modem. Why? Would have Lucid Ubuntu does not support Huawei E220? If yes, why? Whereas the older Sierra 881 could be used. For the record, before I use Ubuntu Karmic on both the laptop and all could use. Huawei E220

I want to configure the Huawei E220 modem I recently bought in Fedora 10. I read lot of detail documents in the internet. All were interesting and explaining the wvdial.conf file. The problem I have is that, the file asks for the phone # to dial, username & a password. I don't have these information since my ISP didn't provide those. It works perfectly in Windows, in which above information are not needed, because when plugged in Windows, a software installation launches, which does the job to connect to the internet. So, is there a way to configure the modem to connect to the internet without those information. Because my ISP refuses to provide those, when I called there customer services.

I can not get NetworkManager to handle my Huawei E220 usb modem. I have searched forums and tried a lot of things. I have just upgraded from openSUSE 11.2 to openSUSE 11.3 using zypper. It seems to work fine except that umtsmon stopped to work, so for now my laptop has no connetion to internet at all. Here are some information about my settings:
I have used usb_modeswitch to make the device a modem. Am I right if I say that usb_modeswitch is a one time command, or does it swap the setting each time it is called? Anyhow lsusb states that the device is a modem. (All the time.) code...

I have a weird problem on my laptop. Everything works okey on PC though.
I'm using kNetworkManager on my OpenSuse 11.2 on PC.
Everything works fine there with the following settings:
1. Make a new GSM Connection in kNetworkManager and enter settings there
2. Edit etc/sysconfig/network/config file and set .....DNS_Policy from "auto" to ""
3. Enter openDNS to /etc/resolv.conf (nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
It works like that on my PC.
I did the same on my laptop. The modem connects fine, but the DNS'es ain't resolved. So skype etc will work, but no pages will open in Firefox for example.
What else should I need to do to make this work?
It's weird it works the SAME way on my PC, but doesn't on my laptop.

I seem to have a problem with my mobile broadband connection. I have a huaweii e166 usb hsdpa modem. It is veeerrryy slow. It used to work fine in karmic a few days ago, used to get 800kbps (from whatismy.com), now in Lucid the speed test does not even finish sometimes, but if I open the system monitor it shows about 1kbps. Sometimes is gets slightly faster and I can browser a bit more, but then the speed goes down again, to barely useable. I have also setup the modem in xp and whatismy.com speedtest shows 900+kbps constantly. I did a clean install of lucid on my compaq presario cq60 laptop. I have disabled ipv6 and installed the usb-modeswitch_1.1.2-2_i386.deb and usb-modeswitch-data_20100127-1_all.beb but it is still very slow.

I use Hauwei E220 modem to connect to the internet but for some reason it doesn't want to connect anymore. It works perfectly in XP, it picks just about every wireless network in my area (which I have no access to), it works beautifully if I plug it in before switching on my PC. If, however, I plug it in when the PC is on then nothing
Strangely, it used to work fine then somehow forgot what its supposed to do...

I have had a huawei e1550 from 3 and can easily make 1gb of credit last the month.I have just purchased a new modem a zte mf112 and it is hammering the credit. In 2 days it has used nearly a third of the gig doing just the same as i normally would. The old one is a 3.6mbps and the new one a 7.2mbps so i thought always being at the better download/upload speeds it would be cheaper because it should download things quicker.I do know the old one says hsdpa and the new one hsupa but the new one always being at a quicker speed should of cancelled the difference out?

I moved from Debian to Ubuntu a few months ago, with everything working fine, except my 3G modem (which worked with wvdial and umtsmon in Debian).
The packaging claims that it is a Huawei E160, but lsusb says different: E220 (12d1:1003).
I've followed various instructions from these forums and the wiki, and it seems to be being recognised as a modem (I can set up an O2 prepaid (UK) connection), but it refuses to connect.

I've used Ubuntu for almost 3 years now and now I'm forced back in the arms of windows. Unfortunantly the only internet connection thats available here is a 3G modem connection. When I bought the connection a Huawei E122 modem was delivered to me.
When I plug it in it recognizes the modem as it should and it even lets me set it up. But then when I connect, it fails.I have googled around for a couple of days and I've come up empty handed.I really want ubuntu back, and still be able to use the internet.I have a Asus EEE 1008ha laptop and use ubuntu 9.10

I recently bought a Huawei EC1261 mobile broadband dongle from Tata Teleservices. Unfortunately, neither does the dongle does not work in Ubuntu 9.04(Jaunty Jackalope) nor in Windows XP. The dongle is rather mounted as a drive and not recognised by NetworkManager as a mobile broadband device. The drive can be accessed with Nautilus as well as terminal like any other USB pen drive and located at "/media/disk". Also, does the device work in Ubuntu 10.04(Lucid Lynx)? report if anyone has tried using the device on Lucid, as I will upgrade to Lucid if the device is supported.

I currently use Ubuntu 9.04. I have thought of upgrading to 10.04 for a long time, but I am unable to do so as I do not know if my mobile broadband device, Huawei EC1260, works out of the box in 10.04. In the Ubuntu wiki, I found that it was not compatible with 9.10 and a bug report had been already filed. A line is mentioned in the page, which tells us:
Declined for Lucid by Jeremy Foshee
So, does this mean that the problem is fixed in 10.04? Or, if it is incompatible, then, how will I configure it so that it can work? Now, many people may be considering that I might just download the CD image and try it out. Although my company has given me the device with 5 GB of free usage, but I have to show reasons for any file downloaded more than 15 MB.

Symptoms:
lsusb shows little, no /dev/ttyUSB* devices

I just recently switched from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 10.04.1. Like Ubuntu 9.10, Networkmanager will not recognise the Huawei EC1260 until I do all this in a terminal:Code:udo rmmod usb-storagesudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x140bHowever, if I have plugged in a pen drive earlier, then the above methods fail, too. This is a continuation of the problem that first appeared in 9.10 which has not been fixed yet (and reportedly fixed in 10.04).
