Where has the possibility to auto-save session on logout gone in 11.04? Or even just save a session at any point?It has been filed as a bug on URL... but I fear it has been (re)moved on purpose..
View 9 RepliesI am using Fedora 11 + kde 4.3.1 + compiz. for several times now my session ended unexpected, I can't reproduce that behavior and so I am looking for a log or someplace to look after such logout to find out what caused or triggered it.
I saw another thread about unexpected logout while browsing, its not the same although it happens to me so far while using firefox / mplayer / Kontact (kmail) .
I sshed into a Linux machine (bash shell) from a public Windows machine (in our lab) and forgot to log out. I'm now back at my seat in another room and I am too lazy to walk back and log out that session; I can ssh into the Linux machine from my current PC though. Can I force-logout the other session from a new SSH session?
When I ssh to the Linux box from my current PC and type users command, I can see that I'm still logged in there; my name is listed twice - one for the current session and another for the session from lab PC.
I don't have root privileges on the said machine, but I guess that shouldn't matter as I'm just trying to log out myself.
Soon after I installed synergy and set up conky and devilspie, I started having problems with the machine loging out automatically.
As soon as I turn the computer on, it auto-logs in, and when I press enter (it seems it works for anything) the machine logs out. After logging back in it's fine however.

I'm trying to get a script that will auto logout user at a certain time of day.I have look all over the web. All I have found in my hunting is a script that will auto logout user after "x" amount of idle time.

I am using the nvidia module from the ATrpms repo if that has any bearing on the problem.

CentOS 5.5 x86_64 running on a Dell Studio XPS 435MT with i7 920 and 6GB of RAM
VirtualBox 4.0.2 from virtualbox repo.
nvidia driver 260.
After login is always volume level set on 100%. Alsactl store and restore works properly. Manually run: sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound reload reset volume level into proper level, but after login to Gnome is always volume level 100%,Here are some logs:

When I logout/login to Gnome, and sometimes if I stay logged in for awhile, Gnome resets my desktop settings, especially my remote desktop settings, which is how I remote into this subnet and manage the other web managed things like switches. 1. Can I statically set remote desktop (vino I think) settings so they don't change?2. Are there any gnome applet settings I can change to keep this from happening?

I haven't installed ubuntu but using it from my Pen drive. The major problem I am facing is I am not able to save my current session. For example I will download and install a couple of software like 'WINE', 'java plugin' and other useful software for me, but when I shutdown everything is lost and I get a new copy of OS on my next start-up.I can't install a copy ubuntu on my hard disk as I have only single partition on which windows is running.

On Lucid, if I had a stopped job in a shell, the system refused to logout or shutdown, showing a confirmation window. On Maverick, the CPU goes to 100% and then the computer shuts down; on reboot, no application is saved
On Maverick, if there are NO stopped jobs in a shell, I can logout cleanly but only a few applications are saved (eg. terminal, firefox) but others aren't (eg. empathy,evolution) I've checked "Automatically remember application on exit" in "Session management" menu.
I used to use kubuntu last years, but I decide to give Ubuntu a try instead.A thing that was working on kubuntu's KDE by default, is that when you close your session, the system remembers what applications was you using, so in the next boot up they will be open exactly as it was.I would like to have this feature also on my Ubuntu 10.04, but I've been not lucky searching for the option to enable it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Karmic 64-bit and Kate 3.3.90.I have been splitting up a very large (16,000 lines) text file by copy/pasting bits of it into smaller files. I had about 40 of these smaller files loaded into a session along with the large file. About 20 were from a previous day of editing and about 20 had been added (and saved) today.
I tried to save the file I currently had open and Kate crashed. I didn't think it was that big a deal until I reopened Kate and all of the files I had added today were gone!!I've looked in the folder and even the backup files that should have been there for files I'd saved more than once are not there.
I'v installed wmctrl to have a terminal on desktop and I'v configure it with a script I'v found online.I'v add the script to startup menu interface from xfce (I don't know the us name cause I'v it version on system language), when I shutdown I'v save the session, and on the next log in seems that it is run twice, so if I disable the save session button when I log of but in that case it run in the previous status (dir/position)and I want that it run from startup menu from script file....so when I save the session where it save the status??...how can I skip that it run twice with the script running at startup???

Is it possible to restore previous session using bash script when fluxbox starts?
I typically have several terminal windows each of which is connected via ssh to a remote server. In each window I work using the gnu screen program, to ensure persistence of the interactive processes in case of a disconnection.
Currently, whenever the ssh connection drops (such as when I put my client computer to sleep overnight) I have to manually and tediously restart the ssh session inside each window, and then in each window tediously resume the specific screen session (e.g. "screen -r 3453" in one window, "screen -r 3462" in the other etc.)
Is there an elegant way to automate this? Specifically:
reconnect the ssh session if it drops, as soon as an Internet connection is detected run the specific screen instance for the terminal window as soon as ssh reconnects
As a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

i see the xguest package, looks good, but has 2 big problems:
1) seems not possible to customize the session (eg: modifying the home), and this one is not so a big one
2) is impossible to choose a localization: with the fedora login screen it is possible to choose the localization only after clicking on thje usernname, but using xguest, if i click on the username starts promptly the session
so i'd like to ask if is there any workaround for have that "volatile" and better if customizable home i thinked , IF possible to copy an home folder to /tmp (if possible and use the /tmp instead the home during the session, obv with enough available ram) OR copy a home from a user to the"GUEST" one at the start (boot, or login), then delete it at logout or turning off the pc
Is there an entry in System->Preferences that corresponds to the session preferences in older Fedoras? In particular is there a way to save the current session so the same programs open up when I log-in again?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have never ever have a single installation issue with ubuntu (been using it for years and years, and before I used other distributions for years).Now I want to install Ubuntu 10.4 alongside Windows 7. I don't have any other demands or wishes, just for it to install. Unfortunately, there is no way to do that. The installer is always stopping at a "no root file system is defined". When I go to gparted in the liveCD version it shows my entire drive as free, unallocated space (although there are at least 3 partitions, one of them with working windows 7).The LiveCD sees the partitions all righ, I can access the windows partitions without any problem. Fdisk -l also shows my partitions properly. Gparted, however, for some reason doesn't recognize them.
I have only two options:
1) use whole drive (which would erase my windows 7 - no, no)
2) set up manually (which says all my 250gb drive is unallocated space). No other choices.
And generally the installer of ubuntu says "This computer has no operating systems on it."
Installing through wubi doesn't work as well. After restart it wants to install but reaches sth like 257% on "getting time from server" and says there's no root filesystem. So it's all basically about ubuntu not wanting to acknowledge the simple fact that there are already partitions and OS's on my drive...
I was just wondering if there was a way to find out, which processes were active at what time and more importantly when a certain process ended. Is there a log for that? didn't find any.
