View 4 RepliesAfter I installed the system (Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit), I wanted to turn the owner driver (nvidia-current) on in order to gain hardware graphics acceleration, among others 3D acceleration. When I installed this driver and restarted the computer, it appeared that the error message shows up: Code:(EE) No devices detected. No screens found. If I want to have any window based environment at all, I have to go back to the previous settings, without this driver.
The only solution I found so far on the Internet tells to turn this driver off at all, what means no 3D acceleration.Has anyone encountered this problem and found a solution? Is there any possibility to turn hardware acceleration on for this card on Ubuntu?
I am a web developer. I am using win xp at home and Ubuntu at Office. I am thinking to change my OS at my home. If I will go with ubuntu then it is possible to play my favourite games. I mean I like to play counter strike and EA cricket. Shall I get source for Ubuntu also.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have never ever have a single installation issue with ubuntu (been using it for years and years, and before I used other distributions for years). Now I want to install Ubuntu 10.4 alongside Windows 7. I don't have any other demands or wishes, just for it to install. Unfortunately, there is no way to do that. The installer is always stopping at a "no root file system is defined". When I go to gparted in the liveCD version it shows my entire drive as free, unallocated space (although there are at least 3 partitions, one of them with working windows 7).The LiveCD sees the partitions all righ, I can access the windows partitions without any problem. Fdisk -l also shows my partitions properly. Gparted, however, for some reason doesn't recognize them.
I have only two options:
1) use whole drive (which would erase my windows 7 - no, no)
2) set up manually (which says all my 250gb drive is unallocated space). No other choices.
And generally the installer of ubuntu says "This computer has no operating systems on it."
Installing through wubi doesn't work as well. After restart it wants to install but reaches sth like 257% on "getting time from server" and says there's no root filesystem. So it's all basically about ubuntu not wanting to acknowledge the simple fact that there are already partitions and OS's on my drive...
I was just wondering if there was a way to find out, which processes were active at what time and more importantly when a certain process ended. Is there a log for that? didn't find any.

View 7 Replies View RelatedBeing rather new to using Ubuntu on my personal system, I was reading about conky today. Sadly, I can't currently connect my netbook to my workplace network, and won't be able to use it on the 'net until I get back on land. That being the case, I can't just do:
Code:
sudo apt-get install conky
I was curious if there is any way to get conky on my machine... either by downloading it on another machine and installing via USB, or some other way. Or if I'm pretty much out of luck until I can get online with it?
I just got an epson stylus nx515 and I am currently hooking it up to a laptop running windows7. My next step is to hook it up to my computer running Kubuntu 9.10. I see no drivers or support for linux at epsons site. is there a patch that will let my printer software be installed on my computer?

Let's say I install Ubuntu in a way that I use VirtualBox with it, so I can run it inside of Windows.
If you use a Linux-incompatible keylogger such as eBlaster on my computer, will it still record my keystrokes because I'm running it in Windows? Or will it be unable to detect anything since I'd be typing in Ubuntu?
i am a relativelly new user of ubuntu, i have a ubuntu 9 ( i think) on a aone.i am not in the fan club of last updaters, if it works, it's ok.when i try to install (from software center) some softwares, it gives me an error, untrusted packages.i feel it is something like an abuse, at least, bring to the user the possibility to install "untrusted packages" with a button. AT LEAST!because i think it is not normal to don't be able o install blender, remember ubuntu is a linux, then blender should work on.i tested to install many mounth ago, when i i stalled the last version (9.xxx), and it did the same, then i think it is not an update problem at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI might become a new kde4 user within a few weeks since I am testing suse 11.3 and kde4 seems to be, at last, stable enough to be used daily. But, there is one thing that is annoying : I used to split horizontally and vertically ad lib the konqueror file manager to drag and drop any file from a directory to another and have a global view of many directories simultaneously. That great feature doesn't seem to be available in dolphin, which is a good and performant file manager that I'd like to adopt. Any clue to split horizontally dolphin? Plugin? Script? Repository?

As it stands now, it won't work while in List view. Sadly, that's the only view I ever use, and so I always have the boring white background. I would love a brushed metal look or something.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi am trying to prevent Gnome from automounting my NTFS partition. Gnome uses for this package gvfs-mount. This package with other small one's is respnsible for automounting USB changeable media like USB sticks. That works fine for me. But I don't want Gnome mount my NTFS partition on my internal storage device, where Debian Squeeze is installed too. Since Squeeze Gnome works with gvfs-mount to bind smb, ftp NTFS in. For binding a whole NTFS partition I am guessing Gnome use ntfs-3g as well. But I don't know exactly. Is there any possibility to adjust Gnome to automatically mount ONLY USB devices?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have set up a server box running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64-bit with Squeezeboxserver, ftp, apache and all the things that I need.I am running it on a Asus P5Q pro with 9 harddrives attached.I have set up 6 1tb disks that run a raid6 array but I am wondering what would happen if the motherboard would fail me.Is it possible to just replace the motherboard with a newer one and would then the raid6 array still be intact?
I used to run a raid10 with the 6 disks on a Windows 7 machine with a software raid card but the card broke and I replaced it with a new one but the array could would not work so I had to forget all my data and this is what brought me to using a Ubuntu server as OS and running the raid array on the motherboard sata instead. Also, is it possible to make an exact copy of the boot drive/partition and easily replace that is the boot hard drive would go faulty? I have heard about the dd command and I feel it would be nice to know that I'm not totally screwed if the boot drive fails.
