Fedora :: Session Logout For No Reason?

Oct 17, 2009

I am using Fedora 11 + kde 4.3.1 + compiz. for several times now my session ended unexpected, I can't reproduce that behavior and so I am looking for a log or someplace to look after such logout to find out what caused or triggered it.

I saw another thread about unexpected logout while browsing, its not the same although it happens to me so far while using firefox / mplayer / Kontact (kmail) .

Ubuntu :: Click Causes Logout For Unknown Reason?

Mar 30, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. Something really weird keeps happening to me, a total of 3 times so far, and given how it occurs. When I click I all of a sudden get a black screen with some output about states and then the gnome login is displayed.

Here is how it happened:

1) I clicked on the close button on Google Chrome.

2) I double clicked on the Skype icon in the panel.

3) I clicked on a dialog in a Windows 7 Virtual Box guest.

why this is occurring? I doubt you will so how the heck do I go about diagnosing something like this?

General :: Can I Force-logout Other Session From A New SSH

Sep 27, 2010

I sshed into a Linux machine (bash shell) from a public Windows machine (in our lab) and forgot to log out. I'm now back at my seat in another room and I am too lazy to walk back and log out that session; I can ssh into the Linux machine from my current PC though. Can I force-logout the other session from a new SSH session?

When I ssh to the Linux box from my current PC and type users command, I can see that I'm still logged in there; my name is listed twice - one for the current session and another for the session from lab PC.

I don't have root privileges on the said machine, but I guess that shouldn't matter as I'm just trying to log out myself.

Debian Configuration :: XFCE Logout Doesn't Completely Logout Of System / Solution For This?

As a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

Fedora :: Wireless Stops Working With No Reason

Feb 20, 2011

I'm using Fedora 14, 64-bit. My wi-fi adapter is Intel 5100 AGN on a Lenovo laptop. The wi-fi router is Zyxel. From time to time, I'm getting a black message, that a kernel component has crashed (or something similar). Here are the error details:

Package: kernel
Latest Crash:Sun 20 Feb 2011 04:27:54 PM
Command: not_applicable
Reason: WARNING: at net/wireless/core.c:633 wdev_cleanup_work+0x52/0xbd [cfg80211]()
Comment: None
Bug Reports:

In most cases, after that, I'm loosing the internet connection. I can't open any website, can't ping the router (which is my default gateway) and now it happened even without any error, which really pissed me off. Logging out and back in doesn't help, I need to make a full reboot to get back my internet connection.

Under Windows 7 everything is working fine and I'm not having any trouble with the internet connectivity! I had Fedora 11 32-bit before and it was also working normally!

Fedora :: F15 Freezes On Logout?

Aug 17, 2011

When I click logout under the user menu (top right), the confirmation dialogue appears, and I can click Logout. the dialogue disappears and it starts to logout normally... then it just stops. it freezes once the top toolbar disappears. my tint2 bar stays visable, as well as my desktop background, and i can move my cursor around, but it wont respond to my keyboard. After just letting it stay like that for a few minutes, nothing changes, it doesn't even dim the screen or go to sleep, it just sits there.

I can shutdown and switch users just fine, just not logout.

Fedora Installation :: Crashed For No Apparent Reason Several Times?

Jul 1, 2011

I have just installed (after a series of crashes during the install) Fedora 15. I also have Ubuntu Natty installed and use it primarily but I wanted to reach out and try new distros.I've wanted to try Fedora and finally got enough nerve to try. Installing it crashed for no apparent reason several times.ehow it installed and booted right to Fedora. However, when finally figuring out how to run the updates, I began to have the same problem.(Someone elsewhere suggested trying to update through command line--which I did finally though I had a few crashes doing this).

Now I am logging in and then it will just inadvertently crash. I could be in firefox, or using terminal, etc. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to why this is happening and I feel frustrated. I really want to test out Fedora (it looks so nice!) but can't manage to stay afloat more than a few minutes. I might also mention that this does not happen in Ubuntu at all so I can't account for the issues. I have much to learn but I feel a bit intimidated by Fedora because it's so new to me.

Fedora :: 14 Runlevel 3, Logout From X Does't Work?

Dec 24, 2010

i performed an upgrade from fedora 13 to 14 on my test fedora virtual machine (vmware player 3) and i have this incredible problem: I normally boot in runlevel 3 and i start X only when needed with the startx command. When I want to exit from the X environment I use the "log out <username>" command on the System menu (gnome is the desktop manager). After upgrading to fedora 14 and applying all the available upgrade, this won't work anymore! I'm able to start the X environment but when I try to logout the window/desktop manager got killed but X remain active, the background image is visible on the screen, no mouse or keyboard interaction is possible.

The system is stiil alive, i can login through ssh, but i was not able to do anything. manually switching the runlevel from 3 to 5 and viceversa with telinit doesn't solve the situation: switching to runlevel 5 cause the login screen to be visualized and i' can login in the gnome desktop environment but when i logout o when a try to switch to runlevel 3 I always obtain the same result: X remain active and unusable, it's impossible to go back to a text console. what can i do ? any of you has experienced a similar issue ?

Fedora Installation :: Restore Is To Use Ctr-alt-backspace To Logout

Jun 28, 2009

So I just completed a clean install of Fedora 11 from the live CD. The only thing I've done to it thus far was to run the update manager once. Next item on the agenda was to configure my display to correctly handle my two monitors, but if I open up the controls and select 'Display' both my monitors instantly go blank. The only way to restore them is to use ctr-alt-backspace to logout. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon x800L, and right now I'm using the default ati driver that came with the system.

Fedora :: Gnome - Kde Freezes On Logout F12 & F13 / Sort It?

May 26, 2010

I've read some past issues with this and was wondering if anyone else has issues with F12 / F13.

When I logout of gnome or kde on a fresh install of Fedora 13 the panels disapear but I never receive the log on window. I cannot switch to command either the screen is locked completely.

I havn't run updates or anything, the install is nearly out of box except for the installation of kde.. The issue existed before I installed kde, I was hoping it didn't have this issue lol. fat chance of that..

Anyone aware of any fix's? Or what the issue is?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Unable To Logout Or Shutdown From KDE?

Jan 31, 2011

For some reason in the last few days I can no longer logout of KDE, nor will it let me shutdown the system. The only way out is to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and then shutdown from there. Weird thing is other users can. For me the logout box just disappears and I carry on working or if effects are enabled, the screen blurs and I carry on working. After this the logout box doesn't come back up until I have restarted X (logged out).

I have tried disabling the desktop effects to no availe and I have looked in the messages / kdm logs. So far the only thing I can find is in KDM.log

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Internal error: Could not resolve keysym XF86TouchpadOn
> Internal error: Could not resolve keysym XF86TouchpadOff

I have no idea if this is at all relevant but there are several threads from Google relating to this and GDM, although no cures as far as I can tell.

I would rather not delete my ~/.kde folder again if at all possible as it takes ages to reset everything back to normal.

Fedora :: Restart/logout From Fedora 15 Instantly?

When I try to logout, it tells that you "will be automaticallyed out after 60 seconds"..and there are two buttons there. one is to "cancel", one is to "logout". Even if I press the logout button, it will logout after only a minute. My question is that how to logout instantaneously (without waiting for 60 seconds). The same problem happens when i try to poweroff or restart the computer. It will do it only after 60 seconds. Who in the world would like a machine which does things according to its wish, rather than execute your command?

Fedora :: Screensaver/power Management Results In Logout?

Dec 22, 2010

I have searched for a solution to this issue (it's difficult to come up with a minimum number of search terms) and have found at least one person reporting it, but the solution is "check the xorg logfile" - which is entirely too vague, since I don't know what I'm looking for in the file. Here's the issue: The screensaver and/or power management appears to initiate a logout when I try to awaken the computer, whether the screensaver is still functioning or the screen has been turned off. Wither way, I jiggle the mouse, and it appears there is a crash (black screen with spinning mouse circle) resulting in a new login screen, which is entirely disruptive if I have software running, such as recording an audio stream with Audacity.

I'm using KDE with an OpenGL screensaver (antinspect) set to engage after 10 minutes. As for power settings, I am "letting powerdevil manage screen power saving." On the screen tab I have checked "Dim display when idle for more than [10] minutes." I have enabled display power management - standby after 20 minutes and power off after 30 minutes. (There are way too many options under KDE now, and I don't find an explanation of what the various "Profile Management" options do and what the tabs for "Actions" and "CPU and System" do differently from the "Screen" tab. I have an ATI 4650 video adapter. I'm not using a proprietary driver, since I've not been able to determine that there is one that will work with Fedora 14 (or any other Fedora, for that matter). The machine is a recent AMD (dual core 6000+) with 4Gb of memory.

Fedora :: Shutdown/Restart/Logout Buttons Do Not Work After An Update?

Mar 8, 2010

I am running Fedora 12 with KDE on an Acer Aspire One netbook.

A recent update has caused the KDE shutdown/restart/logout buttons (found for example through the Fedora -> Leave menu or by pressing the power off switch)to stop working. I am having to shutdown using shutdown -P now command.

So I have the following questions:

a) Has anyone else had this issue and knows a workaround/fix?

b) Does anyone know what package these belong to so I can try an older version?

c) Does anyone know where this package writes its logs, or if I need to install anything for it to do so so I can have a look?

d) Does anyone know the command-line interface to these commands - that may give me either a more gentle workaround than shutdown -P now, or some insight into why the command is no longer working.
