When I logout Gnome session, the whole system reboots. I found this command, "gnome-session-save --kill", it restarts the system, too.That's what is happening with two of my Dell destops(CentOS 5.6). How could this happen?

On Lucid, if I had a stopped job in a shell, the system refused to logout or shutdown, showing a confirmation window. On Maverick, the CPU goes to 100% and then the computer shuts down; on reboot, no application is saved
On Maverick, if there are NO stopped jobs in a shell, I can logout cleanly but only a few applications are saved (eg. terminal, firefox) but others aren't (eg. empathy,evolution) I've checked "Automatically remember application on exit" in "Session management" menu.
what program runs the Session lock and the screen saver for gnome and KDE on centos 5.5. But most importantly id like to know what the config file for the screensaver/session lock is called and where its most likely located.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a somewhat anemic box, resource-wise, set up in the office where any authorized user plus a guest account can log on. Guest is tightly restricted, but we get a lot of people passing through who need one-time or occasional access - this isn't the big problem. What's causing me problems is that a user will log in, walk away or go to the john and the screen locks. Next user (or this one comes back) and winds up doing another login. At the end of a week or so, I may have a couple of dozen sessions listed when I ask for "users". Since some of these session contain open applications they eat up an awful lot of a marginal amount of available memory. How do I kill the entire session (as root) for a user? Gotta be simple but it's not obvious to me.

It is an openvpn process but I cannot retsrat the service as I alreday have another openvpn service running on the server so when I do openvpn service restart, it won;t know which service to restart.
I just recently purchased a DELL PowerEdge 2850 and have tried installing CentOS 5.4 on it. After the install completes and it does a first boot I get the following error on the DELL console: PROC 1ERROR, PROC 2ERROR E07F0. The monitor remains black and the system hangs. Just out of curiosity I installed Fedora 11 on it to see if it was a hardware problem. Fedora installed and booted no problem. I rebooted with Fedora installed several times and left it running for 24 hours. Everything is working great. Is there something I am missing in the CentOS 5.4 install?

I have a few questions related to the 'Save Session for Future Login' option you can check (and is checked by default) when you go to shutdown/restart/etc.
1) What exactly does checking this option and shutdown/restarting do?
2) Is there any way to have it unchecked by default?
3) Is there any way to completely remove the option?
I haven't installed ubuntu but using it from my Pen drive. The major problem I am facing is I am not able to save my current session. For example I will download and install a couple of software like 'WINE', 'java plugin' and other useful software for me, but when I shutdown everything is lost and I get a new copy of OS on my next start-up.I can't install a copy ubuntu on my hard disk as I have only single partition on which windows is running.

My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am putting together some new systems for my customer and I'm having some trouble with a script that we use to back up files to a DVD R. The problem is that I can't write a 2nd session to the DVD unless I eject the disk and reload it. The drives are slimline type drives, Sony BD-5730S and Teac DV-W28S-V93, so they won't reload without human intervention. Opsys is CentOS 5.4 or RHEL 5.4. I've tried both AMD and Intel based mother boards. If i try this on Fedora 11 or 12 it works fine. This works on IDE attached drives but not a SATA attached drives. Fedora appears to use something called genisoimage instead of mkisofs. I can't get genisoimage to run on CentOS or RHEL.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'v installed wmctrl to have a terminal on desktop and I'v configure it with a script I'v found online.I'v add the script to startup menu interface from xfce (I don't know the us name cause I'v it version on system language), when I shutdown I'v save the session, and on the next log in seems that it is run twice, so if I disable the save session button when I log of but in that case it run in the previous status (dir/position)and I want that it run from startup menu from script file....so when I save the session where it save the status??...how can I skip that it run twice with the script running at startup???

I used to use kubuntu last years, but I decide to give Ubuntu a try instead.A thing that was working on kubuntu's KDE by default, is that when you close your session, the system remembers what applications was you using, so in the next boot up they will be open exactly as it was.I would like to have this feature also on my Ubuntu 10.04, but I've been not lucky searching for the option to enable it.

If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Karmic 64-bit and Kate 3.3.90.I have been splitting up a very large (16,000 lines) text file by copy/pasting bits of it into smaller files. I had about 40 of these smaller files loaded into a session along with the large file. About 20 were from a previous day of editing and about 20 had been added (and saved) today.
I tried to save the file I currently had open and Kate crashed. I didn't think it was that big a deal until I reopened Kate and all of the files I had added today were gone!!I've looked in the folder and even the backup files that should have been there for files I'd saved more than once are not there.
I have dual monitors running successfully with my BFG GeForce 8400GS and NVIDIA X server settings. The only problem is every time I restart, the settings go back to default, so I have to setup the dual monitors again.

But I realized that the barebone gnome package that I installed doesn't include a terminal or a text editor so I can't install anything further or modify the rc.conf file to make it boot without gdm.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSorry if this is in the wrong group but its a bit of an odd one but I think comes under Server Support.. I've set up both x11vnc and freenx in an attempt to eliminate either as a cause for this issue. The problem is that when I log in with either, I can get into the desktop and run things from the menus but when I make the System menu active - the session hangs and you have to killall for the freenx or vnc processes.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me investigate this and hopefully fix it as I'm not sure where to look given that both types of remote connection seem to have the same issue.
I wanted to know how to kill more than one process in unix??
