When I open the places menu, and click something such as my home folder, or any of my removable media it opens rhythmbox. It will not open those places in nautilus. This is quit frustrating. However if I type nautilus in terminal it will open and I can browse my files just find. Seems like a very strange issue.

I installed Exaile music player but after that when I click on 'Home folder' (or any subfolder in it) under 'Places' menu Exaile pops up instead.I uninstalled exaile for a while and everything worked fine but reinstalling it caused the same problem again.

I don't know what I did in the terminal trying to encrypt files but now when I click on something in places tab to open it using Nautilus, it does not, instead it open in a tab of Mozilla Firefox, I don't like it. This happens whether Opera is open already or has to be started from scratch. The link could be in KMail, Akregator or even a link on an applications About box, it makes no difference. I have set Opera up as the default web browser and I am using the following command "opera %u"

View 7 Replies View RelatedI could use some input. I have just recently installed Squeeze and KDE4 as I had hoped that the kinks had been worked out. Anyway, here is the situation: If I click on a link in kmail or kopete (haven't tried other apps yet) the default web browser never opens. Okay, can deal with that but instead what happens is my screen is filled with notifications literally by the hundreds, that konqueror is being started. No window ever opens but the task-bar is then filled with tabs for konqueror. I could not get this to stop and had to kill X (as my settings are to save the state of running apps when logging off. Thus if I just log off over 100 instances of konqueror will be saved and restarted when I log back in). Some things that may be relevant: The box has a 2.3GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. According to mem there is only 12MB of free physical RAM when the system has been booted and logged into. Other things still work, other applications still start and close although be it slowly. Once X restarts and I log back in, if I manually run konqueror it starts but with an error message that a previous session has crashed and would I like to restore that session. I tell it no as I don't want the whole thing starting over. I can drag and drop links in to konqueror and things work as expected. Starting konqueror from a terminal works fine as does using the run box and any link directly to the program. I am not sure how to simulate me clicking on a link to have the program run from a terminal so I can look for error messages. I have tried to search the web for info but I have recieved absolutely ZERO useful hits in nearly 10 pages. If this is not due to my system running out of resources I am thinking it is a bug I need to report. However, at the moment, I have described to you all things the best I could and I doubt with out something more it won't do much good to report it as my other Squeeze installs on an 800MHz system with only 512MB of RAM don't have this problem even though they run slower than molasses in January left outside in Alaska.
In the mean time I have made it so the system messages don't keep filling my screen by disabling the pop-up notifications. This hasn't changed the fact that hundreds of instances of konqueror are trying to be opened though when I forget to first open konqueror and then drag a link into it. At the moment, this is a completely stock install using only the first DVD that is only a week old. Here is the DVD info: "Official Snapshot i386 DVD Binary-1 20100823-05:10"
I somehow managed to stuff up my Bookmarks in the Places Menu while using Totem Media Player: When trying to open locations from Places Menu, Totem opens instead of Nautilus.I'm running fedora 9.

How do I change this so that it just opens onto the desktop? I looked in edit/preferences of Rhythmbox but theres nothing in there.

I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was trying to view a dvd on ubuntu (which works on windows) so I downloaded a few progams from the synapatic manager and software center - nothing made the dvd work but now when I go to "places" and "home folder" movie player opens and has a error message window that is at least 10 deep that says "could not open location; you might not have permission to open file." I can't get to home folder at all!Did I totally ruin Ubuntu? Is this fixable? I rebooted and that didn't help

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu 10.10, and it was doing well as I learned to do the tweaks for internet, etc. However, recently when I click on an item in the "Places" menu, all of the items in the top two "boxes" opened Rhythmbox instead of opening the item listed. I removed Rhythmbox, and now I get the following error message:

Haven't tried to use attachment before so I hope this works. Also, hope someone can give me a clue as to how to change this. I have been tinkering with various Linux distros for some time but decided to get serious about getting one to work for me. This version of Ubuntu seems to be pretty good, but most of the process is still greek to me.
As far as i know VLC is the best media player for linux bc it suppurts all file types. But there is one anoying problem - when i want to listen to song it opens VLC, but when i open another song it opens another new VLC window. And this problemug or whatever didnt apear in Windows version VLC player.

Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.
EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff.If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.

Any suggestions on how to fix it? I'm running a Dell XPS 410 with 4GB RAM and a 1.75 GHz processor.Also, I imported a CD and it plays fine.

I've gotten around it by typing "sudo ubuntu-tweak" in Terminal, but I was wondering if there is something I can do to get it to work without that step. Also, Software Center won't let me install anything. Whenever I click on Install, nothing happens. If I type "sudo software-center" and then click the install button, it begins to install, but I get an error, and it discontinues. Does anyone know what I should do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and at the login screen, if I click anywhere on the screen, the entire system freezes. I can't open up the terminal or anything at this point, I have to restart the computer.
This also happens when I use the live CD.
I've done apt-get update, dist-upgrade... no change. Not to mention, I can't get into xorg anymore to change the video driver to VESA (it's always had trouble in previous versions without the restricted nvidia drivers)

My computer is making clicking sounds that apparently come from the speakers. When I turn down the volume they get softer and then go away. They have no pattern that I have been able to recognize. There will be one or two, then quiet, then seven or eight in quick succession, etc. I run Hardy Heron on a 4 year old Dell Inspiron B120 laptop.
