Lately, when I go to the top panel, click on 'places', then click on any of the folders (documents, pictures, etc.), ubuntu opens rhythmbox music player. In order to open any of the other folders, i must first go to 'places', then to 'file system', & then to the desired folder. My system didn't always do this.
View 1 RepliesMy system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
In Lucid, I got rid of both gnome panels, and just now remembered that Rhythmbox opens to the top panel by default (at least for me), which means when I opened it I got nothing. How do I change this so that it just opens onto the desktop? I looked in edit/preferences of Rhythmbox but theres nothing in there.

With it, I can add a shortcut menu and a Stack icon. From there,I can add applications, but they have a generic *.desktop icon. Is there any way to get the same Mac effect from Cairo Dock, or maybe even a shortcut to the applications folder in Ubuntu?By the way, can someone tell me the default path to the applications folder?"

This is quit frustrating. However if I type nautilus in terminal it will open and I can browse my files just find. Seems like a very strange issue.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Rhythmbox installed in 10.04 on a fresh install with all current updates. I have the FLAC and FAAD libs installed and gstreamer-plugins-ugly, plus the default set of plugins that come with Rhythmbox in 10.04. All my music is stored on a self-built NAS running FreeNAS and serving files over SMB. This NAS has been in use for more than 4 years and has worked flawlessly with all my Windows machines using Winamp as a music player frontend. I can mount the SMB chare in 10.04 and I have no trouble browsing my music files/folders on the NAS.
However, if I try to import the music stored on the NAS using Music > Import Folder... nothing happens in RB. Even dragging and dropping individual music files from a nautilus browser window does not work (nothing happens). Most of the files are FLAC with some MP3's. All music is organized as artistalbum racks. My music collection is a bit more than 16k songs (about 95% are ripped from my own CD's). All tracks are properly tagged. There are no error messages, just nothing happens when dragging tracks into the library or using the Import Folder menu item.
I used to be able to open the Rhythmbox window by just clicking the Rhythmbox icon in the notification area. Now in Lucid it brings up a menu (isn't that what right click is for??) and I have to select "Show Rhythmbox", and sometimes I accidentally click on "Quit" and I have to start Rhythmbox again. It's a real PITA. Is there any way to make it the way it was before? I've looked at the Rhythmbox options and can't find anything about it. (Why do GNOME applications always have barely any options?)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently re-installed my operating system after a system problem. I am running F14 and Rhythmbox 0.13.2. I had all my music files backed up and have copied all the all the backed up files to /home/Music. I also ripped four CDs today and put them in the same folder. Then I started Rhythmbox and went to import the /Music folder for the first time since the new install.
The only folders imported from the Music folder were the files from the four CDs I ripped today. It would not import any of the other subfolders or files. The new files were ogg format and that is what most of the non-imported files were. I tried importing the Music folder with Amorok and it worked fine so there files seem to be OK. Any idea why it isn't working in Rhythmbox?
I've been enjoying using Rhythmbox to rip a stack of CDs. Initially I had problems getting it to recognise Lame but following uninstalling and reinstalling it, it seemed to be working well. That is, until I looked in my Music folder.
It turns out files have been placed in individual folders, named "number - title.udio" (e.g.: "11 - She Can Do What She Wants.udio". The mp3 file itself is named identically throughout - it's the string for the gstreamer settings, i.e. "x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc preset=1002 ! xingmux ! id3v2muxmp3".
The settings within Rhythmbox's properties for folder and file naming are all set to the sensible default. This is a pain. In the short term I'm going to try EasyTAG to sort it out, but ultimately I need to sort this or find alternative software.
under 'System Settings < Keyboard & Mouse' I've already set the option 'Double click to open files and folders' but it doesn't seem to work with Dolphin.

But there is one anoying problem - when i want to listen to song it opens VLC, but when i open another song it opens another new VLC window. I start it and within 10-20 seconds it starts to search something (i.e. in the right bottom there appears a box with a red box sliding left and right). It consumes all my memory (1 giga) and the only thing it does is identify text files in a general directory, NOT in Music. I have completely removed the install, installed it again, the same text files earlier IDed are still there? Is there an alternative?
Computer details: Intel dual core, Nvidia, 64 bit Lucid. The flaw is that it runs on single memory.
I am not sure as to why but rhythmbox actually freezes the system. I am unable to get into another desktop by pressing control-alt-F1, F2 etc. I am not sure how to diagnose this problem. The window loads, and then the system just crashes. According to the software Manager I am using version 0.12.8-1.43

But when i click the X while music is playing, it keeps playing, but it just disappears. The sound button has no options other than volume, and the only way to bring rhythmbox back up is starting it back up. Why doesn't it minimize to the sound button like its supposed to?

Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.
EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff.If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.
I have a very basic problem. Whenever I click on About Me(System->Preferences), I cannot see any information editing window. However, the mouse pointer does show the system is budy doing something, nothing shows up and then the pointer returns to default as if the system is no longer busy. What can I do to change my personal info?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have set up a dual boot system with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. I have upgraded Ubuntu to the most current version available online. I'm unable to create folders or subfolders in the Linux file system. I have researched the manual and my Unbuntu Linux book and see that I should be able to click on 'File' from the menu, then 'Create Folder', and then input the new folder name, but the 'Create Folder' selection is 'grayed' out which I conclude means that it is set on inactive and unable to be used. I am able to access my Windows disk by mounting and then typing in my password, so I have Administrator privileges.
I'm able to create a new folder in Unbuntu Linux for my Windows (NTFS) files. When I installed Unbuntu, I did not see any options to have write access to the Ubuntu file system. I can create new files within the existing folders. Soon after working out my Linux problems, I will be using PHP/MySQL/Apache to do some important work, so I will need to be able to create new folders and subfolders in my Linux system. I have some urgent tasks I need to do away from my PC soon, so I will be a while before getting back to this.
