When I click on "Places-->any item" (except 'Computer') the folder opens in "Archive Manager". I have tried resetting the panels but the problem persists.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to key information into an OpenOffice spreadsheet that is being viewed in another application, typically Firefox. Both windows are sized such that they fit on the screen at the same time. Prior to a week or so ago, this was very straight forward. Now when I click on an app in the Task Manager after opening OpenOffice, other open apps are minimized - sometimes all of them, sometimes just the most recent. I usually have Dolphin, a terminal window, Firefox, OpenOffice and sometimes a spreadsheet open. A friend who is far more familiar with Linux than I, suggested that the memory manager may have gotten confused and that logging out should clear this up. I tried that to no avail, as well as rebooting. I've also looked through the options in each of the apps that I've got open to see if there's any obvious user options that might be affecting this. I've found nothing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to install Sim City 4 Deluxe when somehow through my mounting an un-mounting of the two ISO's nautilus decided to make an entry in the places menu. I've searched through the forums and most of what I'm finding is how to remove things like the network and desktop items.
Here are three screenshots showing what I mean. Number one shows the entry I am talking about, specifically the SC4DELUXE1 entry. Number two shows that just right clicking and selecting remove like many threads suggest does not work here as it is grayed out. Lastly number three, this is the error I'm given when I left click the entry.
I finally figured out how to fix this. I simply went into the disk utility. Under peripheral devices the unwanted device was listed. Click the check file system button after selecting the device. It reports back that the file system is not clean and removes the device.
I am new to ubuntu but I love it. I don't know what I did in the terminal trying to encrypt files but now when I click on something in places tab to open it using Nautilus, it does not, instead it open in a tab of Mozilla Firefox, I don't like it. How can I revert back to Nautilus like normally is?

I click Places -> Home Folder (or any of the other folders, including Computer), and the cursor turns to the spinning "wait" dial, but the folder won't appear. A tab appears in the bottom panel, with the title "opening ZenBeam" (or "opening Desktop" or "Starting Computer", depending on which folder I tried to open) for a few seconds, but then goes away. Left- or Right-clicking on these tabs doesn't give me any options.
This used to work normally, but stopped suddenly a few days ago, following a reboot. I'm guessing it's become corrupted, but I don't know what "it" is. I can navigate in a command line window normally.I have rebooted, and I have run System -> Administration -> Software Update, but that didn't fix the problem.I was going to add the information in System -> About This Computer, but that seems to be having the same problem.What can I do to fix this? What application is failing to run?
I am having this odd problem since I did a clean install of Maverick. I installed Exaile music player but after that when I click on 'Home folder' (or any subfolder in it) under 'Places' menu Exaile pops up instead.I uninstalled exaile for a while and everything worked fine but reinstalling it caused the same problem again.

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. It was a fresh install of kubuntu, although I did leave a windows partition on there elsewhere. Grub messed up but I fixed that with a small text edit. Anyway, when I click on a file, i.e. Open Office writer or Calc, the computer thinks about it for like 60 seconds and then finally Open Office (version 3.2.0)finishes opening the file. It also does this while saving some files. It did not do this this version 9.10 which really amazes me. I have deleted OOo and reinstalled it several times and nothing helps. All other file handling seems normal, and it is a fast newer computer with a lot of memory.

This is quit frustrating. However if I type nautilus in terminal it will open and I can browse my files just find. Seems like a very strange issue.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and I am using the classic ubuntu interface instead of Unity. I am facing problems with the Archive Manager. My problem is that I can open archives but I can not modify them or create a new zip file with the GUI. I get an error saying:
zip error: Invalid command arguments (no such option: -)
The easiest way to reproduce it is by right-clicking on any file, pressing compress and selecting .zip in the file format.
Every shortcut... every program... every link... everything opens in Archive Manager. And then it reports that the archive is not supported... I gotta launch everything directory related through a terminal just to get to navigate through a window manager.

This occured when I tried to open the "SonyVegas 8.0 exe" . I have unzipped this file. I think "exe" has something to do with Windows, if so, is there a way I can convert this file so it can be adapted to my archive manager? Or is my archive manager not working, correctly? surprisingly come across this file that the ubuntu archive manager is simply unable to unpack.these are some articles that i am trying to download.strangely i have never heard of the format and the page asks me to download "stuffit expander" to allow me to view the pdf files.

The question I have, is can I also install this on my pc and choose at login which version to boot and do I install it from the cd at boot up or can I install it from the archive manager in ubuntu 11.04.

It is a samba shared folder and so far I could browse fast and easily those files in another old ( Pentium4 1,5Ghz) PC with WinXP. I installed ubuntu 10.10 but the browsing now is toooooooo slow , although the old Pc's performance is considerably faster than before (when I had WinXP). Also, although the old PC's speed is satisfatory now, would it become even faster if I installed an older ubuntu distro?
