I wish to install an older version of HandBrake, and it's saying something about how the newer version isn't available because of issues with the new versions of GNOME. I've still got Mint 8. So my question is, which version of Ubuntu is Mint 8 based off of? I think it's 9.10, but I just want to be sure.
View 1 RepliesIs there a tool or tutorial to build a distro based on mint/ubuntu/debian?Git, scripts, and tools, small compilations for branding are OK. Compiling kernel, x11, gnome, compiz, etc. is BAD unless really required. Specifically, I'm looking for a way to have some applications installed by default, change logos/about boxes, change theme, configure what compiz options are, and add firmware drivers (connect to the Internet to download wireless adapter driver? <- headache, gotta find a lan cable now ...), and still have the liveCD install method. I'd like it to be based on linux mint, but I only want a few tools from it (update manager, software manager, flash, media codecs), so it's ok if it's ubuntu/debian with those mint tools added back in.
I saw some options, too complex, and others too simple. Not looking for a "learning experience" like LFS which gives me a horrible linux build if I don't do something exactly right. Nor any of those tools which are just package pickers and don't do enough. suse studio looked about right(maybe tad too easy), but was RPM based, not deb based.
I would like to run Linux Mint fullversion from a flashdrive. Is it possible and easy to set up. I have found how to basically create a flashdrive version of the live cd, but I would like to run the full version from the flashdrive.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and all my "Authentication" because Mint kept updating my xulrunner to a new version which would disable Firefox-Smooth-Scaling.Therefore I deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and Authentication, and forced Mint to only install the xulrunner which uses Firefox-Smooth-Scaling. Unfortunately, after I deleted the software sources and authentication, now I can't update my system properly and get error messages that keys are missing. I added some software sources back the "Other Software" (someone responded to a previous post of mine on which ones to add), and under the "Authentication" window I tried hitting "Restore Defaults", but it only added two keys. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on a set up, and I like to be able to toggle compiz on and off, or toggle dualscreen on and off. The thing is, I also have conky on my desktop as well as a terminal window embedded in my desktop (that requires compiz). So, when I turn comiz off, or resize my desktop, I want to be able to reposition conky/embedded-terminal and the terminals position is relative to my conky position and the size of my virtual desktop.
I can do this all fine, except that to reposition the terminal I need to kill it then reopen it. But if I kill gnome-terminal it kills ALL gnome-terminals instead of just my embedded one. How can I specifically close my embedded one and leave any others untouched? Lets say that the title of my embedded terminal is "trans777"Also, the trans777 titled gnome-terminal will be killed when compiz is not running.
I notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?
I've got some source code that loads and plays WAV files through the OSS drivers (and USB audio). The code works even under 2.6.34. Is there any benefit to rewriting the code using the ALSA system?

I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)

I don't find many packages that I need using apt-get. Do I need to compile each package I need from source or use dpkg to install the deb of an i386 version?
Can I use the i386 version on this computer rather than the i686 version? Will it cause a signifncant performance decreaes? (I use this computer to mostly do some reading and writing and file storage, no gaming etc.) How do I force the installer to use the i386 version?
