View 1 RepliesSo my aim is to install openSUSEx64 11.3 onto my Macbook; but for whatever reason, upon boot-up, the system won't recognize the USB thumb drive with the expanded image of openSUSE on it. I followed steps in Terminal to expand the image onto the said USB stick and know it worked properly because Terminal said "Process Completed." Do I need a special type of USB thumb drive or am I missing something? I am using a late-2009 Macbook. By the way, these were the steps used to prep the USB thumb stick:
1. Open a Terminal (under Utilities)
2. Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices
3. Insert your flash media
4. Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
5. Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN
6. Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/diskN bs=1m
7. Run diskutil eject /dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes
Whats better partition based install or LVM based install?Does one perform better than the other?I have a 640 gig drive.I have win 7 installed on a 360 gig partition. The remaining space is free.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install a file and print server for backup and storage using an opensuse 11.3 live CD but the CD loaded the complete desktop. How do i pare this down to a server install? Do I need to reinstall? I have a mixed network of opensuse, Ubuntu, and Windows 7.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm looking forward to using OpenSuse shortly, and hopefully the install is still being performed. I downloaded the GNOME iso and burnt to disc. It was partitioning my win7 drive and creating new partitions. I went to move the YAST screen and that led me to shaking the window (not knowing the screen would disappear).
Now I'm afraid something bad happened. Please tell me I didn't fry my hard drive! At the moment it appears I am running off the cd. I tried to run the Live installer again and got:
The storage subsystem is locked by the application "y2base" (3620).
You must quit that application before you can continue. I cannot tell if the partitioning/installation is still happening.
I wish to install an older version of HandBrake, and it's saying something about how the newer version isn't available because of issues with the new versions of GNOME. I've still got Mint 8. So my question is, which version of Ubuntu is Mint 8 based off of? I think it's 9.10, but I just want to be sure.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an open source web based version control system for our enterprise. To give you a quick picture of what we need I'll give you an example.
1.The customer send us some files for a new project (these will be the version 1.0)
2.We work on these files and make then available to the customer to let him verify that our changes are what he want. (These will be the version 2.0)
3.The customer accept.
4.We start the production.
1. unzip packages.en.gz and then we update some packages version info and SHA1 value in packages file 2. generate new suse/setup/descr/packages, and zip it to packages.en.gz
3. update SHA1 value of packages.en.gz in content fileThen we try to burn an ISO to install, installation fails at the beginning because of incorrect signature of content.
cd:/content invalid signature
Alt+F3 I see the messages:

I have a VM based on SUSE 11.3 that boots into a console in run level 3. I am used GNOME so I am trying to get it installed but not having any success. I don't know a lot about the VM as I got it 2nd hand.
So far I have gone into YAST and installed gdm and all the dependencies. I have changed from Run level 3 to 5.
When I run startx I get

/etc/x11/xinit/xserverrc: line 56: exec: X: not found
giving up

Short question: It has been possible in earlier releases to create boot floppies from CD install version, for those PCs who haven't a bootable CD drive.11.2 is deployed as a DVD iso, but I need CD isos for an older laptop with a bootable CD drive only, not DVD. Is there a similar possibility for 11.2 also available?I want a full install, not the readonly "Live" versions.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to version 11.4 and now I can not install any application. Not YAST or zypper downloaded RPMs.Firefox and Konqueror can not download links that are rpm. I do not understand what happens. Ties other than rpm, if fully discharged. I tried as root and nothing.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).
I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

If I boot from the opensuse 64bit DVD (Ver.11.0/11.1/11.2 - its the same effect)-the bootmenu appears-i choose to install opensuse in the menu-now the kernel is loading-then i see shortly the next screen-and then my notebook reboot.I have the effect also in the live-version 64bit.The 32bit version works properly.i haven't any problems with vista 64bit or Ubuntu/Kubuntu 64bit, but the same effect with mandriva 2010.0 64bit.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the DVD 32 bit and 64 bit as I have 2 machines, one 32 and one 64. After I burn the disks, I put the DVD in and run the check media. The 32 bit version says invalid checksums, cd is broken. I try to install and ever single checksum is invalid, not just one. But every file. The 64 bit says it has bad sectors in it. And will not install. I have tried re-downloading them. Tried burning them on computers. Tried different burning speeds. Nothing. Is this just bad files on the website, or is this all my computrs?

In an effort to solve a problem I was letting openSuSE upgrade as much as I could and then all of a sudden gdm wouldn't start.
I've found some problems but I have no idea how to fix them, remember I have no graphical interface. zypper does work and I was looking for a way to downgrade something figuring that just reversing one of my upgrades should do it.
If anyone could give me some steps for getting out of this mess I would appreciate it. Also, if it is possible to just install the new openSuSE 11.2 without losing all my custom settings I would be happy to take that as a solution.
In any case, here is the info I have so far on the problem:
- I get this error over and over in the command screen:
Any this command that I found in the post: ldd -r /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
Gave me the long output at the bottom of this.
When trying to run the Live version of OpenSuSE 11.0 from a CD, I can run from the command line, only. No graphics at all. No error messages. Tried some of the other suggested fixes on other threads, but nothing worked. The machine in an old HP OmniBook.
What I really want to do is reformat the HDD and install OpenSuSE on it, but the machine has no DVD drive, so I downloaded an iso image of the live version of 11.0 and burned a bootable CD. It boots, but I can get no X-Window, or the KDE desktop. I'd really like to convert this old machine from Windows 98 to Linux, but seem to have hit a brick wall.
wher can I download an older version. My system has less then 1 gig of ram so I can not run the 11.3 version, I tried 5 times.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having stability problems with opensuse 11.3. On three occasions when you login the system is rebooted. Also blocked the entire system three times. This happens shortly after starting and running amule, but not if due to this application. Use kde 4.5, these problems are happening in the last week.
View 7 Replies View RelatedA month ago, my HP Mini 1035NR, with a Windows XP system died. Since then, it won't boot into Windows. I tried installing Ubuntu via a bootable USB with no luck. I have finally been able to create a working bootable USB running the Gnome version of Open Suse 11.3.
Aside from not picking up my ethernet connection to the Internet, my bigger issue is I can't install Open Suse from the USB. I get a message when I try to install that there may not be enough memory and it hangs at the section where you choose your time zone. I would like to install the latest version of Open Suse with KDE. Is there anything else I can do?
Where can I download opensuse 10.X version?
post a download link?
Thinking of installing openSuSE on my laptop and wondering how the upgrade process is. I know 12.1 is coming out in only a couple of months. I don't really want to spend all my time customizing 11.4 and then find out a straight upgrade is very buggy or even not possible and have to reinstall.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm interested in buying a new hardware for my company. The old server (now 10 years old) should be replaced with a new one. Till now, I was looking on different hardware suppliers, boards and different other places. I found a Tyan board [URL]. The hardware spec is quite interesting and the board would fullfill our claims.
how both storage devices will be supported by Ubuntu or Debian??

I downloaded the latest ClamAV (clamav-0.96-27.1.x86_64.rpm) from the opensuse ftp site and when i double-click on the RPM and choose 'install' it says this:[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.h1Oz1u] Repository already exists.I looked in the software manager in opensuse to see if it has the latest ClamAV package but it doesn't have the latest package or any package of ClamAV.
