General :: How To Build Distribution Based On Ubuntu / Debian / Mint Easily

Is there a tool or tutorial to build a distro based on mint/ubuntu/debian?Git, scripts, and tools, small compilations for branding are OK. Compiling kernel, x11, gnome, compiz, etc. is BAD unless really required. Specifically, I'm looking for a way to have some applications installed by default, change logos/about boxes, change theme, configure what compiz options are, and add firmware drivers (connect to the Internet to download wireless adapter driver? <- headache, gotta find a lan cable now ...), and still have the liveCD install method. I'd like it to be based on linux mint, but I only want a few tools from it (update manager, software manager, flash, media codecs), so it's ok if it's ubuntu/debian with those mint tools added back in.
I saw some options, too complex, and others too simple. Not looking for a "learning experience" like LFS which gives me a horrible linux build if I don't do something exactly right. Nor any of those tools which are just package pickers and don't do enough. suse studio looked about right(maybe tad too easy), but was RPM based, not deb based.

I've been using and relying on linux for some time. I have even tried distributions like Arch. I was wondering what would be a good book for learning the inner workings of linux, how to write shell scripts, compile my own kernel, how to build my own distribution, things like that. I also would like to know if there is a good book for linux networking works. I want to be able to modify distributions specifically for my hardware, and have a better home net work set up.

I want to install a Linux distribution on my stand alone (possible on a VM and an intel-based). My question is which one is better suited for me in preparing for the training. Now that we are starting to face the reality of Vista/Win7 implementations, we will need to do an upgrade of Samba to enable functionality. I am having difficulty in upgrading our version of Samba (3.3.4), as I compile from source, and do not use binary distributions. I'm running Slack12 and could really use some help on how I can build samba from source and UPGRADE it easily?

I am looking to build a simple HTPC based on boxee, it is a very low power machine (2ghz P4, 1gb RAM, 1gb video card).
At present it has Win7 on it, but I want to run boxee as my media centre software (I love the watch later facility) and I was wondering what it would run best on?

I have downloaded whole linux source codes of fedora in a dvd. There are several rpm packages and lots of directories in it. I want to load all source codes to version control system (svn or cvs) which is loacated in a server and develop it step by step .During this time I want to build my own distribution. I notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?

I wish to install an older version of HandBrake, and it's saying something about how the newer version isn't available because of issues with the new versions of GNOME. I've still got Mint 8. So my question is, which version of Ubuntu is Mint 8 based off of? I think it's 9.10, but I just want to be sure.

I would like to install a program (R for statistical computing). I am using Slackware. On the download page of R (The Comprehensive R Archive Network) there are options to download the code for Debian, Redhat, Suse, and Ubuntu. Which one should I download in my case (using Slackware)? Is there any of them which I should not download?

When I signed up for my Debian Linux VPS hosting and first logged on and invoked ps, there was the only user process running: sshd. As I can see, this was minimal Linux with only two things installed and configured: sshd and apt (plus all dependencies, of course).
I want to build (or use existing) similar Linux distro, any advice on how to build (or pick) one? Googling "minimum linux", or "linux with sshd only" usually brings up Debian's netinstall, which is not what I want.

On Debian, if I want to compile some package X myself, but I don't want to spend time hunting down and installing its dependencies, I can issue the following command:

apt-get build-dep X
And apt (so long as it knows about package X) will install all the dependencies for me.Does the yum package manager on RedHat-based systems have a similar feature?

I just installed Mint Debian version on an old desktop computer, but it doesn't play audio.
At first vlc even had the whole audio menu greyed out; I followed this, downloaded the deb and installed it. It seemingly recognized my card, but upon reboot, everything is still silent - though vlc now has the audio section accessible.
If I go under audio preferences and select hardware, no device is present.
Here's some information. code...
Any idea what to do to get audio? Everything else works, I'd hate having to wipe the partition just for this...

Issue: I want to backup my system and be able to restore if/when my system crashes.
Setup: Thinkpad T61 running Sidux KDE3.
I want to back up the system files more than personal data. What I have found is that when I apt-get dist-upgrade the upgrade performs without error, but when I restart and login I get a black screen with a mouse. From the 'black screen' I can open yakuake with F12 and then launch applications and such from the command line. The point of this more troubleshooting right now. Later is so I won't need to do a complete reinstall.
What backup prog have you used that will backup the complete system and is easy to restore?

All my friends say, OpenSuse is the best distro. I have tried it, but I just can't make it work for me. I have a lot of problems touchpad not working properly, wireless, it crashes. It looks good, but I need a distro which will work on my dell Vostro 1700. I have found Ubuntu (gnome) best for my laptop, but I would like to try (KDE) something more polished like OpenSuse. A distro which works like a charm.

When I asked about filesystems with compression I got recommendation to try ZFS. Looks like it worth trying, however I find tools that manage ZFS (zfs, zpool) quite overcomplexified - you need to create some volume, then add it, then create filesystem on it. And finally it suddenly created things in root directory like /qqq/test and it uses /var/run/zfs/zfs_socket (strange for a filesystem).
How to use ZFS (with FUSE) without it's complicated things with volumes, just as good filesystem with compression, something like mount -o loop image.zfs /mnt/qqq -t zfs-fuse?
How to setup ZFS as non-root? FUSE usually means "user can use it too" (example: ntfs-3g). I expect something like this:
Can ZFS be more usual FUSE filesystem that I can add to /etc/fstab and user can install and use on its own?

I have a mini-ITX based system with a 256Mb Flash Drive and 256Mb of RAM.
I aim to use it for the following applications:
Samba Server
Cups
Rsync
Basic Web Server
File based Wiki (perhaps Dokuwiki)
Package Management (to easily add other software as required)
I don't need any X based software or Desktop.
I was hoping to create a Debian Live distribution and run the whole operating system either from a Read Only file system or from RAM.
However (after connecting a standard HDD) and installing basic Debian along with the packages I require (and their dependencies) the filesystem is already over 1Gb in size.
Is there any way this can be reduced drastically in size? Is Debian Live the best way of achieving what I want? Something like Puppy Linux is much smaller in size but I don't want something with such an emphasis on having a Desktop environment which I don't need.

I've seen many, many different solutions for how to change the GRUB boot order. Search no more. This is by far the easiest, safest way to do that.
Open your terminal and type in the following:
sudo apt-get install startupmanager
When that is done go to your control panel and you'll have a new icon that says Startup Manager. Every thing you'll need work with your GRUB menu.

Is there stability advantages to installing the mint-meta-debian package from the repo below??? I have read that LMDE is safer than running Testing because there is less chance for breakage with LMDE. Less risky overall. Is that true?
