Ubuntu Installation :: Running Mint - Full Version - From Flashdrive ?
Dec 12, 2010
I would like to run Linux Mint fullversion from a flashdrive. Is it possible and easy to set up. I have found how to basically create a flashdrive version of the live cd, but I would like to run the full version from the flashdrive.
I just got Mint 10 DLed and I'm ready to install. I was reading around and saw that a Live USB can be done. Can anyone tell me how to do that? I also wanted to install it to a PC that isn't ready yet, but I a saw one could make a USB drive work like an OS disk. Can anyone help me with that also. All the years I've worked with PCs, I never installed an OS off a flashdrive.
I have an XP laptop, currently running very low on HDD space and RAM capacity, waiting to be replaced. Very slow indeed. It recently had problems booting up, and now takes about 20 minutes to get fully started. Is it safe/advisable to run the demo version of Ubuntu from the LiveCD? I really can't afford to trash or crash my computer, it's got lots of important data on it etc.
Manual from Fedora says that I cannot Install Fedora 14 x64 bit version from USB. Why? Can't I use utillities like FlashBoot? or another tool to make bootable USB?
I installed Ubuntu on to a usb hard drive now without that hard drive plugged in i cant get to my windows(it goes to grub recovery). With it plugged in it lets me pick witch OS to use. How do I get it to just boot right to windows when its not plugged in?
I'm fairly new to fedora. I used Fedora 14 on a virtual machine just to mess around with it a little while back but thats about it. As far as linux goes, I just test a bunch but can never seem to pull myself away from windows. I am hoping this is the time but these issues are the weirdest I've seen on any linux distro ever. My GPU (Radeon 5750) is running at 69C idle and the fan is at full speed. I am not overclocking it at all and I'm using the default drivers that came with fedora. It works just fine in windows and a lot cooler. How can I fix this?
I'm running the Gnome 3 desktop version, which I am also getting some graphics artifacts. In the bottom bar I get a dashed white line that comes up every time I boot and goes away when I make the bar expand. Also in the applications window I get the same dashed line at the top of the window and sometimes the top of the scroll bar. So far I really like Gnome 3 (Idk why everyone is whining about it) and I'd like to stick with Fedora, and linux for that matter
I finally bought marble blast gold. a very cool game. i was able to run it on my mac perfectly fine. but now when i install in on my ubuntu machine its not doing what its supposed to. i did a ./MarbleBlastGold 1.4.1.sh.bin after doing the sudo -i command. it installs just fine. but when i go to run the game, i cant find it in the menus. thats ok, i have commend line experience. so i cd to the install folder, and run a ./marbleblastgold, and this is the error i get. so what can i do, and what does this mean? good thing i bought it for all my computers. one copy of course.
I wish to install an older version of HandBrake, and it's saying something about how the newer version isn't available because of issues with the new versions of GNOME. I've still got Mint 8. So my question is, which version of Ubuntu is Mint 8 based off of? I think it's 9.10, but I just want to be sure.
I have a windows 7 version right now on my laptop, but someone screwed me over and put a 'non genuine' version and now its slowly starting to glitch out on me.I can reinstall windows but Im sick of it and would rather run Ubuntu. My scripts are not running correctly on this glitched out version of windows anyway.I just have some simple question regarding the switch over from windows to Ubuntu,
Does anyone know if it would be possible to copy/clone my current Ubuntu install to a memory card of usb stick, and then boot from it? I have a HTPC and the hard drive is the loudest component in the pc. I was hoping that running it from a flash drive would be a lot quieter.
I recently deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and all my "Authentication" because Mint kept updating my xulrunner to a new version which would disable Firefox-Smooth-Scaling.Therefore I deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and Authentication, and forced Mint to only install the xulrunner which uses Firefox-Smooth-Scaling. Unfortunately, after I deleted the software sources and authentication, now I can't update my system properly and get error messages that keys are missing. I added some software sources back the "Other Software" (someone responded to a previous post of mine on which ones to add), and under the "Authentication" window I tried hitting "Restore Defaults", but it only added two keys. These are screenshots of my Software Sources windows.

I am facing troubles installing XP on Virtualbox 3.1
I use a desktop ASUS, Dual Core, 3gig RAM, 500 Gig hard drive. I run Linux Mint 9.
On installing XP in Virtualbox I ran into trouble, I could not get my cursor captured into the XP install. Despite pressing right CTRL. The window would pop up with info on "capture" but the cursor would not move.
I tried again full screen. This seemed to lead to continual re-boots. Perhaps I should have let it re-boot itself, but kept pressing "enter" going round in circles.
Maybe I should get rid of the Virtualbox 3.1 and use 3.2, which I downloaded, but don't know how to replace the old. Also I gave it 13 gigs.
I would like to download a complete Ubuntu Server on a CD/DVD to be installed on a server where there is no Internet connection in a developing country (Africa). Please let me know how I can download a full version of ubuntu Server on a CD/DVD.
I downloaded Ubuntu and was hella pumped to use it.. I downloaded it, burnt it at a 4x speed (slowest I can) I did a clean install and made it the only OS on my Hard Drive. After installing it said I didn't have connection. After a good 3-4 hours, I tried every option, I even got it to say I was connected but I still had no Internet connection. I put in my Windows 7 disc to go back to what I originally had. BUT I couldn't install it to a hard drive that wasnt formatted at NTFS, I guess Ubuntu changed my HDD. So, I put back in my Ubuntu disc and clicked 'Try Ubuntu'.. Found out that the TRIAL gives me Internet but the full version does not. I copied down the configuration that the Auto Eth connection had, and went back to the full version - I already had in the exact same configuration. So im here with a trial on my computer, can't download anything or install anything. I cant go back to Windows 7, and I need the disc in to use my computer.
with the help of others (to whom grateful thanks), I've managed to get this distro installed and my PCMCIA Wireless card working without a LAN connection!Result......well it was for me!next big prob is sound.......any sound at all! This command sudo modprobe snd-cs4236 sometimes gives me some, just for the current session, if it don't want to play, it just ignores me!Two main questions,
1) How do I get the attention of the "Alsa Mixer"? (the GUI is normally just blank and may or may not be activated by the above command!) 2) Once I have the attention of the "Alsa mixer", how do I maintain it upon re-boot?
Some one guided me to this post and despite it's age, I appended my plea for help....but I fear it is not the correct place............I just hope I'm now in the right place.url
Used to run Gentoo, years ago, getting back on the linux train. Anyways, got a new media pc and am having some troubles getting it to function. I am using ImageWriter, an OCZ Rally 4gb flash drive and have tried both HTTP and BitTorrent downloaded copies of 11.3 with the same md5sum check wrong error. What am I doing wrong? Is it because it thinks it is a CD or am I getting bad copies of the ISO? I am so out of practice I can't remember anything about installation anymore and am at a loss.
I started to install Fedora thinking I was just going to place it in the / and /home partitions I already have but the installer only seems to give me the option to use the whole disk.I have 3 / and 3 /home partitions 2 of each are occupied by Linux Mint and Mint KDE so I wanted to use the last / and /home for Fedora.
My boss is asking me if there is any way to run a full version of Ubuntu from a flash drive without installing virtualbox/vmware on a windows host. I've been searching pendrivelinux.com and really haven't found anything. Can someone point me in the right direction?
I recently installed F12 on my main notebook and ever since the fan has been running at full speed (or near full speed). According to the 'sensors' command I usually have temperatures between 50-70. I didn't have this problem before the installation.
I have a requirement where I want to extract the full name of the process running in my box. I tired various options of ps. The wide option gave me the full command but that contains command, the interpreter and also the arguments passed.
Code:
XX XX XX XX XX XX /usr/bin/sh /path/to/exe/myexe.sh arg1 arg2 arg3.
Is there any way from ps or any other command I can extract the full name of the command
Checking the process table for the running sendmail, I would like to know the full path to the sendmail binary a la the ps -ef on a Sun or other servers. How do I get ps to give me the actual path, or should I use a different tool on my Linux servers?
