Ubuntu :: Mint Kept Updating Xulrunner To A New Version Which Disable Firefox-Smooth-Scaling?
Apr 11, 2010
I recently deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and all my "Authentication" because Mint kept updating my xulrunner to a new version which would disable Firefox-Smooth-Scaling.Therefore I deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and Authentication, and forced Mint to only install the xulrunner which uses Firefox-Smooth-Scaling. Unfortunately, after I deleted the software sources and authentication, now I can't update my system properly and get error messages that keys are missing. I added some software sources back the "Other Software" (someone responded to a previous post of mine on which ones to add), and under the "Authentication" window I tried hitting "Restore Defaults", but it only added two keys. These are screenshots of my Software Sources windows.

I can't find a package of Firefox in OBS which is compiled with smooth scaling of images option turned on (as is the case in Windows version where this option is turned on by default). Could someone provide me a link from where I can get this package.

I have to use the above ppa to render web pages correctly. But the last version for Lucid is for firefox 3.6.10.from september. With Firefox being on 3.6.13, it renders it unusable for me. Anyone know of a workaround or another ppa I can use?

i face problem with Firefox 3.6.11: smooth image scaling doesn't work. When i zoom in websites (ctrl +), images are not anti aliased, but appear pixelated, which is very ugly.
What I found out about so far, this seems not to be a FF problem (FF3 should support smooth image scaling), but a problem with the video driver, who tells X it could do smooth image scaling automatically but it cant. There is also a "bug" fix for the FF:
launchpad.net/~firefox-smooth-scaling/+archive/ppa I putted this to my package sources and made a system update. But smooth image scaling still doesn't work

When I use Qt programs, I have lots of smooth effects like fading, tints moving, etc... How do I disable them? I guess it's "systemsettings" app that does this config, but I couldn't find right option. I don't wanna change the look of KDE programs, I just want to make effects instant, not smooth. Let everything else stay the same.

I want to be able to disable CPU scaling, whenever I want. The reason is that I run some timing tests, and I want the results to be reproducable (ie the CPU running at the same frequency). I have tried the following on 9.10 and 10.04 (both amd64). I use rcconfig to disable "on demand" (from [URL] but then when I use cpufreq-info tool I get:

When I boot my machine (using a dual core 2ghz CPU) I always find myself out of "performance" mode (which I need), using only 1ghz per core. While this is easily fixable with "sudo cpufreq-set -g performance", I don't seem to be able to do it before having control of the machine. I would like to be able to boot with my CPU at full power.I would prefer to disable whatever is scaling down my CPUs to having to inject cpufreq-set to change governor. Anyone has any hint?I use default Ubuntu but I boot into a KDE4 desktop. But the same issue happens booting into the Gnome desktop.

I want to turn off frequency scaling permanently and totally in the lowest-level way possible. Is there a kernel command line that can be used or is recompiling the kernel without the governor stuff the only way?
Solved. Just modprobe -r and blacklist the acpi_cpufreq kernel module.

I'm using the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop 64-bit distribution. Hardware is the Dell Vostro 1015; laptop with Intel (g)45 express chipset with Intel x4500MHD graphics accelerator. Celeron 900 2.2ghz single core, 1GB RAM.
The issue is I have smooth scrolling enabled in Firefox. And whenever I scroll the page, it's very choppy/laggish/not smooth at all. When I go on ..... to watch a video, any slight scrolling will cause it to flicker like crazy. The effect reminds me of when I run Windows without installing drivers for the video card.
Now I wanted to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue, so I installed Windows7 and did the exact same thing. Everything runs smoothly, I can smooth scroll no problem, and video playbacks without any flickers whatsoever. It is a lower end laptop, which is basically for the occasional ..... and web browsing.
I will try the 32 bit edition in the meantime to see if it helps. I was under the impression that 32bit limits your maximum ram to just under 4GB. (I planned to upgrade the laptop a bit)

I wish to install an older version of HandBrake, and it's saying something about how the newer version isn't available because of issues with the new versions of GNOME. I've still got Mint 8. So my question is, which version of Ubuntu is Mint 8 based off of? I think it's 9.10, but I just want to be sure.

Which LXDE version of Linux has the newest version of Firefox and Open Office included?
I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)
I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.
So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?

My server's manufaturer (supermicro) only provides RAID drivers for certain RHEL (CentOS) releases, 4.4, 5.2 and 5.9 are presently available. An accidental yum update recently took the server from CentOS 4.4 to 4.7, and abandoned the RAID driver. My choces are to reload 4.4 or go to 5.2. Since I will probably do the latter, is there a way to have yum just update within the distro, and not the distro version? Can someone ID the rpms I could exclude to be sure that the OS version remains static?

Using Synaptic and/or terminal is great and so easy, but i have noticed that applications are not always the latest versions that are in the repository ie cups for instance So if i wanted to download the latest app from a website, what is the best way to install, based on having an earlier version already installed. Is it better to just install over an older version or remove the older version, and then install the new version clean
If you remove and older version of an application first, what is the best method for doing this and removing any residual files etc that might be left on your system?

I have just downloaded CentOS 5.3. The kernel version is 2.6.18.xx However, when I updated the kernel version has not changed. Still 2.6.18. Unless something went wrong with the updates. The most up to date kernel is 2.6.31.xx I was thinking shouldn't it update to this new kernel? On my Fedora 12 I have 2.6.31. However, I thought the kernel of 2.6.18 would have been updated as least a little.

I have CentOS 5.4 installed with lighty and MySQL installed via yum. not a problem. The issue become when I'm having problem with the current mysql that I installed via yum which I believe its currently at version 5.1.42-2. So I'd like to upgrade it to the latest available version of mysql. Except I can't figure out whether to download the generic glibc32 version or just get the RHEL5 version or find the mysql enterprise version somewhere. So, not knowing what I'm doing, I downloaded the RHEL5 version since it's closer to CentOS 5.4. Except for whatever reason the mysqli is not installed or configured properly and I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any suggestion? Everything was working nicely when I used yum to install, except the problem with the version of mysql that's offered in the repository. So I'd like to request a suggestion on how to either somehow upgrade mysql using yum and there's a different repository that I didn't know, or perhaps download a proper latest and greatest mysql, install and have it configured so that mysqli work properly.

I am running firefox-mozilla-build (3.6.3-0ubuntu1) on 8.04 32 bit (this is not the system listed in my sig or user information). In general it works very, very well. Every day Adept has me update xulrunner-1.9.
I can run apt-get autoremove, update, upgrade with no errors. I see others on this forum have this error, but I can find no solutions posted for it. I used to run Namoroka 3.6.2pre from launchpad and had the same problem. Nothing could uninstall it except Synaptic "Completely remove". I removed all firefoxes and xulrunner at that time and then reinstalled 3.6.3 which works great. I hoped that would fix the xulrunner issue but no dice. While running 3.6.2pre I had the same issue.

I have recently upgraded ubuntu to natty. I'm using a ppa (Firefox Stable) and during an update using update manager it blocked on these lines:
Setting up xulrunner-1.9.1 (1.9.1.18~hg20110309r27352+nobinonly-
0ubuntu1~umd1)
This prevents me to even see other updates cause update manager says the index is broken. How can I solve this? I don't want to reinstall firefox because I'm worried it blocks again (now firefox works).
