Ubuntu Installation :: Results Of 'apt-get Update' Command Different Than Update Manager

Mar 24, 2011

I've run the command "sudo apt-get update" from terminal, showing no update to do.Then I've run the update manager (System-Administration-Update Manager) and it has shown an update (adobe flash).I thought that "apt-get update" command and update manager were the same... Why do I have different results ? Is something missing in my "sources.list" file ?

General :: Bash Command History Update Before Execution Of Command

Jun 7, 2010

Bash's command history is great, especially it is useful when adding the history -a command to the COMMAND_PROMPT.However, I'm wondering if there is a way to log the commands to a file as soon as the Return key is pressed, e.g. before starting the command and not on completion of the command (using the COMMAND_PROMPT option would save the command once the prompt is there again).

I read about auditing programs like snoopy and session recorder like script but I thought they're already too complex for the simple question I have. I guess that deactivating that script logs all the output of the command would lead already in the right direction but isn't there a quicker way to solve that probelm?

Ubuntu :: Can't Load Up VNC After An Update With Command

Dec 18, 2010

I was told to use this command for an update. It took about an hour. After it was done I restarted and now I can't start my VNC server. -Using a VPS btw. Normally on a fresh boot it uses around 15mb of ram a little less now it's stuck at 2mb - 4mb. When I try to start the VNC it goes to about 9mb which is supposed to go around 350 to 400mb.

Ubuntu :: Error Message With Apt-Get Update Command

Apr 21, 2011

I am unable to update apt-get and I am unable to install any software. The following message when I use the sudo apt-get update command:
W: GPG error: [URL] maverick Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783
W: Failed to fetch [URL] Hash Sum mismatch
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

When I for example try to install the gcc I also get weird feedback:
gcc is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I thought it was that they where already installed on the comp, however, the computer keeps telling me that gcc is not installed. I am not quite sure what to do. I am using the latest version of ubuntu (10.10).

Ubuntu Servers :: Which Command To Automatically Update Packages

May 11, 2011

I'm currently writing a script that will update the software packages on six ubuntu servers so I don't have to go in and update them manually constantly. Problem is, I'm not sure which command I should use to do this the most effective and safe way. Currently, I use sudo apt-get upgrade -y on my own machine, though I can see how this could be dangerous on production servers. I was in the IRC chat and I was told aptitude safe-upgrade is something I may want to look into. Is there a way I can only update security related stuff instead of everything? What do you guys suggest would be the best way going about this? Another issue I can foresee is certain packages that have an interactive prompt. While apt-get upgrade -y takes care of most of this, MySQL would fail with this as it opens up it's own prompt. Anyway I could make my script skip these types of prompts, so I can go back and update them later manually?

Debian :: 'update Grub' Command To Use?

Jan 20, 2011

I have two partitions with Debian on them. One is straight Debian and I installed Grub to the MBR. Another is Linux Mint LMDE and I installed (or so I think) grub to the root partition. Mint is not listed when Debian boots up and there's no entry for it. What did I do wrong? I'm not familiar with Grub 2. Is there some 'update grub' command that I need to use? Why doesn't this get configured when the other OS is installed? Or is this just how it works? I suppose grub will work for the other OS. If I 'update' Grub with my Debian system, it will "detect" the new OS, maybe? I wanted the current Grub in my Debian install to handle everything since the Mint install isn't my main system and just experimental for me.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Wants A Command Line Verified?

Aug 27, 2010

I made a live USB memory stick / pendrive with Ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 using my desktop computer. I want to install / update my netbook that has no network function yet. I booted the desktop with the pendrive & ran update manager. I want to update the kernel so I will have the driver that will operate my netbook ethernet.Acer AOD260 has Ethernet Controller: AR8151 v1.1 Fast Ethernet, Atheros Communications & Network Controller: Broadcom 4727 (rev 01)and will not work from the current release of 10.04 (too new) but there are supposed to be drivers in the newer kernels.

Running Update Manager I get a box labeled "Debconf on ubuntu" & says "Configuring grub-pc". There is an entry box that says "linux command line:" & is empty. When I press the help button I get the message "The following Linux command line was extracted from /etc/default/grub of the 'kopt' parameter in GRUB Legacy's menu.lst. Please verify that is correct, and modify it if necessary. The installer is hanging, Preconfiguring packages ..., probably waiting for a response, but I have no idea what to do.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Update Boot To Grub Command Line

Sep 29, 2010

I recently updated, and now when I boot it only goes as far as grub command line. There is no grub menu. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with only Ubuntu installed -- no dual boot, no weird partition schemes. Originally installed Ubuntu 09.04 on this computer, upgraded a couple times and it currently has (had) 10.04.1 LTS running. The update should have upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. I can boot with a live CD and mount the hard drive. The drive seems fine, so it appears to be simply a grub config issue. I have to boot with live cd to get online to check for potential solutions. So I'm taking some notes on how to use grub.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot After Update - Udevadm - And No Chroot Command

Dec 20, 2010

I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 on my Eee PC 901 (the one that has 2 SSD's). It all went fine, and I ran the update manager straight after install and config. It installed the updates (all 198 of them!) without error. I was prompted to restart, so I did. I got the error "udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured". I found out that this error is well documented, and I followed the guide at [url](apparently it affects all variants, not just UNE).

It went O.K., until I tried the command "sudo chroot /media/newroot". I got the error that "cannot run command '/bind/bash': no such file or directory". What should I do?

I cannot boot into and earlier kernel (problem/current one is 2.6.35-23-generic) I can only fix it via live USB stick.

Ubuntu :: After Natty Narwhal Update It Goes Straight To Grub Command Line

Apr 29, 2011

I upgraded from Meerkat to Narwhal. After all the files have been downloaded and installed it rebooted. Once it rebooted it went straight to the GRUB command line. After couple of hours of research, I ended up at
[URL]

My root was at (hd0,1). So therefore I put this in at the GRUB prompt.

set root=(hd0,1)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot

I did what it said and it got me into Ubuntu. Nice! It asked me to: After successfully booting into the system the user should run sudo update-grub I did. Next it asked me to review (/boot/grub/grub.cfg). That's where it is hairy, my file has multiple root settings and with msdos settings. That doesn't seem normal.

'apt-get' still worked.
Anyway, if you're gonna update check dependencies first. It seems I lost gnome due to gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs. So first uninstall that package if you got it.

General :: /bin Directory Is Deleted After Killed Yum Update Command

I have a serious problem on my VPS. I ran "yum update" and then hit the Ctrl+C to cancel when I realized that I need to specify a package to update, not all of them, but when the console returned suddenly I lost the connection, when I try to reconnect to the machine, it says /bin/bash not found !! even when I try to issue commands from the VPS control panel, it reports that the commands are not there

I can issue a ticket for the ISP to resolve this, but I need to know the risks before I do this, I have no backup on MySQL and 2 live web applications, although they are still running, I am afraid if I restarted the VPS everything will be gone.

I'm sure there is, after all this is Linux, I just need to know how. Reason being is I'll be ssh'ing into these machines to disable the update applet and don't want to touch all the machines and click my way to stop it at startup. Figure there has to be an easier way

However, when installing some updates the computer has hit that section which means it becomes unresponsive and makes a nasty clunking sound every 10s or so. Because of this I've had to abort the update but now whenever I try to run 'dpkg --configure -a' to sort out the problem caused by the interrupted update I get the same freezing up and clunking. The message that appears when I run the command is adding extension /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.0/program/mailmerge.py... and then it freezes.
