Debian :: New Stable Update - Command Aptitude Not Found
Feb 7, 2011
Well it didn't go smoothly for me. After downloading over 1,6Gb (!) of that new Debian version and restarting I was 'greeted' by a dreaded CLI instead of gnome. To make matters worse I got "command aptitude not found".
'apt-get' still worked.
Anyway, if you're gonna update check dependencies first. It seems I lost gnome due to gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs. So first uninstall that package if you got it.

"Complete Guide to Using Wine from the Command Line (Ubuntu)" first thing it said to do for ubuntu user's was this-
"Before I continue with my rant about gaming on Linux I would like to point out right now that the very first thing you should do when you install your ubuntu set up is to run the following:
Code:
user@ubuntu$ sudo aptitude update
user@ubuntu$ sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-extras
but when i try and run in the terminal i get "command not found".
using ubuntu 11.4 natty kernel linux 2.6.38-8 generic gnome 2.32.1

I am trying to upgrade an amd64 lenny system to squeeze.I've got a 2.6.32 kernel running, done aptitude update and aptitude install aptitude. When I try "aptitude safe-upgrade", it sits forever resolving dependencies.it seems to search with the resolver counting up more and more open/conflict/ whatever.I stopped it once it got over 100,000)Is it possible to get aptitude to do a safe-upgrade, perhaps using a command line option?

I recently switched back to ubuntu after a year of gaming on w7, however I think that this time I'm going to stick to ubuntu, if she doesnt screw me like she has the previous times. Anyways, I was just wondering what media players you guys favor, and why? (maybe there doesn't have to be a reason xD), and I tried to install beep media player with:
sudo aptitude install beep-media-player
And the return is: sudo: aptitude: command not found

I'm getting the following message when attempting to install or upgrade a package. Not sure if it's a bug or not, which is why I'm hesitating to file it as a bug.
For example (note line /bin/sh: 1: /usr/bin/apt-listdifferences: not found):
Code: Select alldebian@Debian:~$ sudo aptitude install angband zangband moria
The following NEW packages will be installed:
 angband angband-data{a} moria zangband zangband-data{a}
0 packages upgraded, 5 newly installed, 0 to remove and 49 not upgraded.
Need to get 5,240 kB of archives. After unpacking 13.0 MB will be used.

I have a very strange problem; when trying to apt-get update or aptitude update I get time out errors. At first it was resolving ipv6 adresses:

I'm developing with puppet, and I need to do an aptitude update from a specific file, here is my configuration: The file sources.list in /etc/apt/ is deleted. I've created 3 files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d each one with their repos:
00-debian_sources.list
deb http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
[code]....
All the repos are updated/refreshed , and I only want to refresh/update the specific repos insie of the file 01-debian_security_updates.list. On the other hand if I put some repos in the sources.list and delete the 3 files and I create an external file for example in /tmp/temprepo and I do the command aptitude update -o dir::etc::sourcelist=/tmp/temprepo it works fine.give some workaround to update and then upgrade packages from the files specified in my config.

I update Jessie "stable" 8.2 to 8.4 and now I get 5 minute interval kernel messages:
Apr 18 06:39:52 OraHost kernel: [131985.494726] sdc: unknown partition table
Apr 18 06:45:03 OraHost kernel: [132295.755942] sdc: unknown partition table
Apr 18 06:50:03 OraHost kernel: [132595.946564] sdc: unknown partition table
Apr 18 06:55:13 OraHost kernel: [132906.139327] sdc: unknown partition table
Apr 18 07:00:23 OraHost kernel: [133216.340555] sdc: unknown partition table
I believe this has something to do with an mdadm update which was included in the release. When I configured the array, I didn't partition the disk devices, so maybe that has something to do with it. I am thinking of rebuilding the array and partitioning prior to build, but a quick fix would be referable.
And also something appears to have happened to the raid device since the update.
Prior to update, the array was /dev/md0 - now it is /dev/md/0 which is a symbolic link back to /dev/md0.
mdadm --detail --scan now reports /dev/md/0 where previously it reported /dev/md0
I created a new RAID1 array on a fresh system and immediately after the create, these messages appear at 5 minute intervals.

I've just installed Debian on my old iMac G3. The install seemed to go ok but failed to load to the GUI. Thats ok I'll just enter some lines into the xorg.conf and it will be fine, or so I thought. Now at the shell prompt when I type in any sudo command it says: "sudo command not found" Is there an alternate command I can use in this situation.

I have been following the Xen Beginners Guide here: [URL] .....
Everything was going smoothly until I got to the 'Configuring xen-tools and building our guest' section (two thirds down the page).
I installed xen-tools and then typed the following in a terminal window (as root):
xen-create-image --hostname=development-pv-guest --memory=2048mb --vcpus=2 --lvm=develop --dhcp --pygrub --dist=jessie
I admit PV is new to me, compared to simple HVM, so I have a number of questions:
1. Why the command not found error?
2. Should I be booting from the Xen option or regular boot option at the start up screen when creating the xen image? I've tried both and get the same error message.
3. I have Debian 8 (Jessie) installed on my system and I wasn't sure whether I should therefore make this the guest OS in my Xen PV. In asking this question I'm thinking in terms of HVMs - but I assume my Xen PV needs a guest OS of some kind? Or is my host Debian 8 already acting as a guest OS in Xen PV? I'm confused
4. If I do need to install a guest OS, is it better to go for an earlier version of debian - so as not to be so resource hungry?
I'm nervous about screwing up my host debian installation, so when I got the error message, did some research but found nothing meaningful. I don't want to end up having to reinstall my Debian 8 (base OS) ... again!

I recently did a reinstall on my system and I am now running Squeeze. I am currently trying to get some software running, but I believe I am having issues with the graphics requirements. The software needs an X server with 8 bit / PseudoColor mode. It is recommended to work in "8,24"-overlay mode. This was set up on my old install on this computer, so I know it is not a problem with my graphics card. But in the installation guide it says to enable this function it is necessary to add some information in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. The problem is I don't have this file. I had this file in my old install, but on the fresh install it is not there. I have the /etc/X11/ directory, and it contains: directories: app-defaults, applnk, cursors, fonts, twm, xinit, xkb, Xreset.d, Xresources, Xsession.d
and
files: default-display-manager, rgb.txt, X, Xreset, Xsession, Xsession.options, XvMCConfig, Xwrapper.config
I think I've looked through everything in the /etc/X11/ directory but I don't see anything that looks like the XF86Config-4 file. Is there possibly a package that I am missing or something I need to run to create this file? I know on my old install this file was created or modified by running 'xf86config' in the command line. I've tried that, but it tells me 'command not found'.

I am a ham radio operator and I want to use my computer to run "RTTY", "PSK31", and other digital modes. Therefore I have to be able to configure the serial port.
I only have the onboard port (ttyS0).
I can get info about the port by using "$ dmesg | grep tty"
Code: Select alldebian@melsdeb:~$ dmesg | grep tty
[Â Â 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled
[Â Â 1.533804] serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
[Â Â 1.534337] 00:06: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
But when I try to use "setserial" by itself or with any parameters I get this...
Code: Select alldebian@melsdeb:~$ setserial -g /dev/ttyS0
bash: setserial: command not found
Even "man setserial" gives the same result.
I am using Debian 6

Has anyone tried updating dbus in factory up to level 1.4 under openSuSE 11.3 x86_64 and continue to run KDE 4.4.4 Stable? Just wondering if it causes any issues or if it forces you to go to KDE 4.5.1 Factory. I've tried updating to 4.5.1 without, other thread, and the suggestion was to update dbus to 1.4 to correct speed issues.
