I have done the kernel compilation for linux-2.6.38.5 I have perform all the steps well ,once i am updating in /boot/ grub/menu.lst & giving command update-grub it showing this error

I foolishly let Ubuntu update grub yesterday on my Wubi installation and now cannot boot:First I get the error:Error: unknown command - loadfront.Error: File not found then the system reboots almost immediately so there is no chance to get to the grub prompt.I assume my choices are 1) restore from backup (I have one) or 2) boot from a LiveCD and edit grub (I don't know what changes to make).
But I would rather be able to update grub in the future along with other Ubuntu updates, so I'm really hoping someone knows what the error is in this last update and whether it will be fixed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a guy in my office who was using an old version of ubuntu and he tried upgrading to 10 but now he's getting grub error 17. I Google this and everyone suggests reinstalling grub starting with opening a shell and typing 'sudo grub'.
However, I get 'command not found' in response to that. I've tried looking for the location of grub so I could try 'sudo /sbin/grub' and such, but I don't see it anywhere.
Also, I'm using a version 9.10 Live CD at the moment because I can't find out how to disable the drmraid option on the version 10 CD (necessary to detect the hard drives which, although they are on a raid controller are not configured as an array but separate drives).
Well it didn't go smoothly for me. After downloading over 1,6Gb (!) of that new Debian version and restarting I was 'greeted' by a dreaded CLI instead of gnome. To make matters worse I got "command aptitude not found".
'apt-get' still worked.
Anyway, if you're gonna update check dependencies first. It seems I lost gnome due to gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs. So first uninstall that package if you got it.
my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two partitions with Debian on them. One is straight Debian and I installed Grub to the MBR. Another is Linux Mint LMDE and I installed (or so I think) grub to the root partition. Mint is not listed when Debian boots up and there's no entry for it. What did I do wrong? I'm not familiar with Grub 2. Is there some 'update grub' command that I need to use? Why doesn't this get configured when the other OS is installed? Or is this just how it works? I suppose grub will work for the other OS. If I 'update' Grub with my Debian system, it will "detect" the new OS, maybe? I wanted the current Grub in my Debian install to handle everything since the Mint install isn't my main system and just experimental for me.

I recently updated, and now when I boot it only goes as far as grub command line. There is no grub menu. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with only Ubuntu installed -- no dual boot, no weird partition schemes. Originally installed Ubuntu 09.04 on this computer, upgraded a couple times and it currently has (had) 10.04.1 LTS running. The update should have upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. I can boot with a live CD and mount the hard drive. The drive seems fine, so it appears to be simply a grub config issue. I have to boot with live cd to get online to check for potential solutions. So I'm taking some notes on how to use grub.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Meerkat to Narwhal. After all the files have been downloaded and installed it rebooted. Once it rebooted it went straight to the GRUB command line. After couple of hours of research, I ended up at

My root was at (hd0,1). So therefore I put this in at the GRUB prompt.

I did what it said and it got me into Ubuntu. Nice! It asked me to: After successfully booting into the system the user should run sudo update-grub I did. Next it asked me to review (/boot/grub/grub.cfg). That's where it is hairy, my file has multiple root settings and with msdos settings. That doesn't seem normal.

Bash's command history is great, especially it is useful when adding the history -a command to the COMMAND_PROMPT.However, I'm wondering if there is a way to log the commands to a file as soon as the Return key is pressed, e.g. before starting the command and not on completion of the command (using the COMMAND_PROMPT option would save the command once the prompt is there again).
I read about auditing programs like snoopy and session recorder like script but I thought they're already too complex for the simple question I have. I guess that deactivating that script logs all the output of the command would lead already in the right direction but isn't there a quicker way to solve that probelm?

I am having issues booting my LFS system on my hp nc8230 notebook running LFS SVN. Grub was built and installed per the book. My file system is almost as simple as it gets:
/dev/sda1 is swap
/dev/sda2 is my LFS partition /
The LFS live cd still uses the now deprecated drivers for HDD's thus as far as the livecd is concerned my block devices is (hd0) and /dev/hda2 for the root respectively. However the kernel to be booted runs on the newer drivers thus on boot my block device should be referenced as /dev/sda2 for the root. Grub is in fact installed on the MBR what happens is right when my system boots I get a file not found error the grub CFG is pointing to the correct block device and root partition from what can be seen by looking at the grub.
I installed a program with Yast (Kmess), but when I try to run it, bash gives me back this message:
