Ubuntu :: Warning - Do Not Install 11.04 Natty

Jun 2, 2011

This may be too late, but, Do not under any circumstances install or Upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty, it is the buggiest distro they have ever produced, it is better to stick to 10.04, it's far more stable and stuff just works. Natty use a new desktop called Unity, that is totally useless, there are ssh issues that prevent logging to a remote terminal using a public key, Natty is just useless. I'm going to have to backup my ~ directory and reformat then re-install 10.4, until such times as Natty is fixed!. Check the launchpad bugs section and you'll see there are more complaints about Natty then any other Ubuntu version.

Ubuntu :: WARNING: When Updgrading To Natty \ Had A Malformed Attribute ("Priority" Was Stated As "Normal", When It Should Be "Standard")?

Apr 29, 2011

A minor problem became a huge quasi-catastrophe yesterday when I was doing the upgrade from Maverick to Natty on this machine. One of the packages I head had a malformed attribute ("Priority" was stated as "Normal", when it should be "Standard")This made the upgrade process stop, and nothing I could come up with would make it resume. The system asked to reboot, and that's where the problems began, because the computer was rendered unusable. After I found and corrected the above problem (by manualy editing the offending bit on /var/lib/dpkg/available the process went on, but by this time things were really screwed up, I had to manually install unity before I could have an usable machine again. So, beware this error, and maybe the developers could make a more robust error detection trap for this kind of problem, allowing the upgrade to continue (it was a non-essential package).

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Install, Will Only Boot Once After Install?

Apr 28, 2011

I've installed 11.04 64bit several times, and here's what happens. On install and reboot, seems to work fine. Then on 2nd boot, 2 things:1) grub has changed, the count-down counter is gone.2) will not boot in normal mode, I have to boot in reduced graphics mode, and even then only boots about 50% of the time, and then hangs on shut down.Help! I'm running 10.10, and it's got problems on my new laptop too, and was hoping 11.04 would get me where I need to be. I do NOT want to go back to windows. Some more info:Dell Vostro 3550, with Intel i3, and Radeon discrete graphics.3GB DRAM

Ubuntu :: Debootstrap Warning - Install Server 10.04

Aug 7, 2010

I've been trying to install Ubuntu server 10.04 and I keep getting a Debootstrap warning. Warning: file:///cdrom/pool/main/p/plymouth/libplymouth2_0.8.2-2ubuntu2_i386.deb was corrupt. I am then presented with options to Continue or Go Back. Whichever option I choose, the installer keeps giving me Deboostrap warnings. I've tried to find solutions online and I've done the CD integrity test as well as a memory test. I've passed both. i am installing this on a Dell Dimension 8400 machine with 1 GB RAM and a 80 GB HDD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting BusyBox When Trying To Install Natty From USB?

Apr 30, 2011

I've tried both the DVD and CD, the CD with both usb-creator-kde and unetbootin. The results are the same always, the USB boots, into the splash screen, I select Start Kubuntu, it goes to the loading screen. After some seconds it starts scrolling a wall of text, gives some error about not being able to write or read /root/var/* because they don't exists and end up on a BusyBox with (initramfs) prompt.

I need to install the system on a new disk (2tb) instead of upgrading because I have to send the current one (1tb) to replacement. Could the large 2tb disk be a problem? I tried unplugging all disks and leaving just the disk I want to install to, but no deal... (both are SATA).(Checked the md5sum and they both match for DVD and CD...)

Ubuntu Installation :: No Bootable Device After Natty Install

Apr 29, 2011

I tried upgrading to Natty last night through the update wizard and the install went perfectly... until I rebooted and it got stuck at a screen with an "_" in the top left corner of the screen and nothing else. I guessed that this was a grub problem, so I tried reinstalling grub2, but to no avail. So, I burned a Natty install CD and proceeded to reinstall, formatting the partition (/home was on another partition and did not get formatted). Again, the install went great, rebooted and this time I get "No Bootable Device - Please insert a bootable device and hit enter". So, again, I try re-installing grub2 from the live CD. I purge, uninstall, and reinstall grub2... nothing works! What the hell?

Ubuntu :: ATI Driver Unable To Install Properly On Natty

Apr 30, 2011

I've recently switched over to Ubuntu 11.04. I installed Natty by wiping out Maverick entirely. Everything worked well, until I tried to install ATI graphics drivers through the instructions found here: [URL] The installation goes fine without any errors; however, when I reboot, nothing shows up on the screen. I can hear Ubuntu's startup sounds, but there are no visuals. When I attempt to go to the ATI Catalyst Control Center in Recovery Mode, I get this error:

Quote: There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling these drivers multiple times, and I've also tried using the generic driver detected by "Additional Drivers". None of these work at all, I cannot see anything on the screen when any ATI drivers are enabled. I've even tried re-updating Natty via CD, but none of this works. I have a Radeon HD 3450 graphics card, and my CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+. I'm on 64 bit Ubuntu. I had no problems with my drivers on Maverick.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Macbook 8,1 - Natty / Grub 2 Does Not Install?

Jun 20, 2011

I am able to install 11.04 (64bit) on my MBP, but after installation I cannot boot into it.[URL]...

Quote:

This information will not work for iMac (11,1) users installing recent versions of Ubuntu (e.g., Maverick). The presence of the bios-grub partition that the Ubuntu installer creates by default (e.g., sda3) causes a conflict that prevents syncing the GPT and MBR partition tables. Deleting sda3 does not help since grub2 requires that bios-grub partition, nor will it use either sda or sda4 aborting with the error: "This GPT partition table has no BIOS boot partition; embedding won't be possible!". So installing Ubuntu with the bios-grub partition fails and installing without it fails. See "Single-Boot". And this seems to be the problem, as trying to re-install grub from the live-cd results in that error message. Looking at this forum there are a lot of people running ubuntu on the same laptop, so my question is: How??
