Ubuntu :: Video Thumbnails Won't Load In Lucid?
May 2, 2010
I'm currently using Lucid Lynx and my video thumbnails won't load. I already modified my preferences that thumbnails would always load, and set that files smaller 4GB will load. Only the generic video thumbnails load. I already tried deleting the files in ~/.thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory/ but still problem exists.

I have Ubuntu 9.10, and writing video files to a mounted disk is slow. The reason is every time the buffer is flushed to disk, Ubuntu starts making a new video thumbnail for the file.If I skip the first block that has the RIFF data, then Ubuntu doesn't realize it's a video, and the write speed is about doubled. Then I can write the RIFF data at the end of the transfer (in the appropriate place in the file).I have tried setting an exclusive flock on the file while writing; however, that does not prevent Ubuntu from reading the file while it's being written and generating thumbnails.

I tried to search about this from google and opensuse forums but didn't find any help, so I'm starting this topic.I just updated to OpenSUSE 11.1 with newest gnome and default kernel. The problem is, I don't have video thumbnails any more in nautilus. If I recall correctly, in 11.0 I had them with totem-xine, but now I can't find it in any repos. Added some additional repositories, but still nothing.
If there is not totem-xine available, how to get video thumbnails, I mean like generating automatically every time I open a folder with video files in it.

I'm using Nautilus 2.28.1 with Ubuntu 9.10.With WMV videos which were recorded using "Microsoft Windows Media VC-1" codec, even though they play okay in MPlayer, no thumbnails are ever created or displayed in Nautilus. Other video formats display thumbnails fine. I must already have the VC-1 codec or MPlayer would not even play the video. Is there anything I can do to get the thumbnails to display for this video format

I'm looking for suggestions for a command line utility than can generate a contact sheet (e.g. jpg etc) from a video? I'm mainly interested in starting from FLV files, but i guess the solution will probably work for other formats with appropriate codecs etc. So, for example, if i have a 30 minute video, every 2 minutes through it i'd like it to generate a thumbnail and then put 15 of these in a 5 x 3 grid in a single jpg. On Windows,Media Player Classic Homecinem will do this through its ave Thumbnails command.
Ideally i'd like to do this from the command line/script in a debian server environment, rather than a desktop GUI. It doesn't have to be a single command, if a chain of steps could do it.

I want to watch a certain video on [url]...., but I get an error message instead. Some videos can be played, so I'm thinking it's a form of restriction, but I can't be sure.I tried using a few proxies, but on some the error message persists and on others the video doesn't load. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and Firefox 3.5.8.

I just installed Lucid Lynx RC 1 on my MSI Wind U100 netbook. When I tried to play a video on it I was informed of a lack of codecs, so I downloaded my video player of choice: VLC media player. When I tried to play the video, there was audio but the screen was black. The same thing happened when I downloaded to codecs and used the stock video application.

Installed Lucid as a dual boot on Dell Dimension2400. Upgrade Mgr gave me 501 upgrades to install, which Upgrade Mgr did, after which It locks up on login screen. I am getting the following error: [1.809435] eth0: Broadcom 44xx/47xx 10/100BaseT Ethernet00:0b:db:a1:a9 [9.412958] b44: eth0: BUG! Timeout waiting for bit 00000002 of register 42c to clear. Do I need to buy a new ethernet card, or is there a "BUG"?

I went to fire up Lucid this after noon and it gave me this error message. I didn't want to write all of that down so I took a picture. After several minutes it did nothing. I then decided to do a hard restart. This time it isn't giving a signal to the monitor. The monitor is less than half a year old, but I tried another. Still nothing. It show's no signal like it's not even hooked up to a machine. It doesn't even show the BIOS menu! I don't know if this is the cause or not but, I left my computer at my mothers house last night were they had a thunderstorm.
I have several applications like Virtual box and Mobloquer that took a hell of a long time to setup. Plus three guest operating systems, and some work that I didn't backup like videos. If we can get this up and running without re-installing.

I have used VLC player in the past to play music under certain conditions, but am having a bit of a problem. I have Googled this problem to no avail. Nowhere in the menus can I find a way to load a playlist. This playlist was generated under and saved from VLC. When consulting the documentation at the website, it says to load the playlist from the "Playlist" menu, but there is no "Playlist" menu present, as shown in the screenshots from the site. I can find the "Save Playlist to File" option under the "Media" menu, but nowhere can I find a "Load Playlist" option. I have read that the playlist can be dragged and dropped (specifically, directly onto the player), but VLC won't play the playlist. How to load a playlist into VLC?

I just upgraded my server from 9.10 to 10.04. I have ISPconfig installed on it and worked like a charm until the upgrade. Now when I point a browser to my site the page just hangs as if it is trying to load it but I never get an error nor does it load the page. I have tried to restart apache using /etc/init.d/apache2 restart in which I receive an fail error:
root@ubuntu:~# /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
* Restarting web server apache2 (9Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
[Code].....
After this I still get the same results when trying to load the page in the browser.
I cannot load anything in the www root or virtual host files.

On Lucid, using the nVidia proprietary drivers, the panel takes about 15-20 seconds to load after loging in. Everything else works fine, I can use my desktop shortcuts and open other programs, just the panel leaves an empty space at the top and bottom, until it loads.
I don't have this problem on a laptop with Intel graphics running Lucid, nor when using Nouveau drivers on this computer. I read somewhere that it could be due to gdmsetup not having it's config file, but even after trying the suggested workaround (opening gdmconfig and changing settings so the config file is made) the problem persists. If I run "killall gnome-panel" the panel disappears (not surprisingly) and then briefly pops back up before disappearing again for about 10 seconds.
Could this be something to do with Compiz? With the Nouveau drivers Compiz is disabled, so Compiz is the only thing I can think of that affects the panel differently between the two graphics drivers.

This thread describes how to build a 2.6.34 kernel with load-balancing to cut down the number of load balancing wakeups. Running powertop on my amd64 PC shows that this kernel cuts down the number of wakeups by around 30%.
1. Open a gnome-terminal and get root privileges:
Code:
sudo -s
2. Install required packages for building the kernel:
Code:
apt-get install build-essential bin86 kernel-package libqt3-headers libqt3-mt-dev wget libncurses5 libncurses5-dev
3. Download the 2.6.34 kernel source file:
Code:
cd /usr/src
wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...2.6.34.tar.bz2
4a. Download the diff file for the patch from [URL] and save as (eg) patch-load-balancing.diff. Move it to /usr/src once you have downloaded it.
5. Untar the source file:
Code:
cd /usr/src
tar xjf linux-2.6.34.tar.bz2
6. Link /usr/src/linux to the resulting folder:
Code:
cd /usr/src
# the folder linux may exist as a symlink from previously; if so, remove it
if [ -e linux ]; then rm linux; fi
ln -s linux-2.6.34 linux
[code]....

Laptop: HP 6910p Wireless Card: BCM4312 NO issues with wireless in 8.10 (intrepid) - fwcutter driver. Performed clean install of 10.04 (lucid) onto a brand new hard drive (July 2010) - fwcutter driver. NO issues with wireless in 10.04 (lucid) until a few days ago, when. my laptop shutdown because the battery died and I safe-upgraded to 2.6.32-24-generic. Currently I have chronic wireless connectivity issues - slow to non-existent. Ping tests (ping -c6 google.com or ping -c6 4.2.2.1) sometimes reveal 0% loss, sometimes 100% loss, sometimes "unknown host" - within 5 minutes of each other. Regardless of ping results, web pages are consistently slow to load. Skype will also cut out from time to time as the wireless connection vacillates. I have a MacBook Pro which I am using as my (wireless and consistently well-connected) control - and from which I am currently forced to draft this note.

I am running my PC on Lucid. It has been working fine, but suddenly the other day I got an error message when booting, saying that Nvidia kernel module failed to load. I had to boot in low graphics mode. The only thing i can think of that had changed is that I had recently upgraded to latest Linux kernel 2.6.36-25.I have tried carefully following tips on numerous threads on this forum and others, but still no go. I have purged nvidia drivers and reinstalled nvidia-current (also tried nvidia-glx-185). However, when I then do <sudo modprobe nvidia>, I get this message:
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/lrm-vide, it will be ignored in a future release.
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, it will be ignored in a future release.
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/bad_list, it will be ignored in a future release.
[code]....
When I go to System>Administration>Hardware Divers, it shows Nvidia-current as present but not currently activated.I have blacklisted vga16fb and nouveau in blacklist.conf, done <sudo nvidia-xconfig> etc.I am at a loss as what to do next, and am still new enough to Linux to not be in a position to fiddle to try fix it myself.

Asus M2N-X MB
4GB RAM
Sapphire Radeon 3450 PCI-E 512MB
LG 19' LCD model L1933TR (Connected through DVI)

How do I capture video from my JVC GR-DF470 MiniDV camera into 10.04 Lucid.PiViTi looks good for an editing app, and I've installed OpenShot as well, but neither have a way of capturing the video from a camera. I used Kino previously in 8.04 Hardy, but it was buggy at best in 9.10 Karmic; I've just installed it in 10.04, but capture keeps stopping after 2 or 3 seconds. I also tried kdenlive, but the audio capture has a lot of 'noise' that is louder than the voices on the tape, and once it finishes capturing video, it doesn't display a 'Save' dialogue as it is supposed to - so that wasn't very successful either. So what can I use to capture video from a MiniDV Camera via Firewire.

I just installed 10.04 Lucid Lynx and have a serious graphics problem. I've attached a picture to show the problem.
Some Background:
Pentium 4 3.06GHz
1.5GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600
I installed via liveUSB but had to choose the "nomodeset" option by pressing F6. Otherwise after the Ubuntu boot screen the graphics went like that in the attached image. The installation went fine (took less than 15 minutes!) but after the reboot the graphics problem returned. I can't see anything and the system is useless this way. I can't post up any logs (I'm typing this from the liveUSB).

I did a clean install of Lucid, and almost everything video related is a little sluggish. First of all, Compiz is really slow compared to how it was in Karmic.
I don't even use window animations, just the Scale and a couple other effects, like desktop cube. Scale is really slow, and sometimes it doesn't work. I have to start compiz again to get it working. Desktop cube actually froze a couple of times half way through a rotation. Rotating the cube is much slower as well.
Also, I've been having a lot of trouble with HD video playback. It's not just the 100% CPU load that's bugging me, but every 3-4 minutes the playback skips frames, and the image becomes all glitchy.
Flash playback also uses a lot of CPU, I can't even watch ..... videos in fullscreen most of the time. And I'm always opting for the lowest quality possible btw.
I have a dual core AMD CPU and 8600GT nvidia graphics card, so it's not a hardware issue.

I just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. I've never had problems with playing video files before, but now that I've upgraded to Lucid, I am, regardless of Compiz and other visual effects being on. What I know of my hardware specs are in my sig. I have "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended]" activated (and in fact, one of my reasons for upgrading was the supposedly improved NVIDIA drivers in Lucid). VLC, MPlayer and Totem are all choppy playing .avi's: they play smoothly for several seconds, then start skipping (audio and visual, separately), though VLC does so less violently than the others. Similar problems, though slightly less severe, with watching flash movies in chromium.
