Ubuntu :: VLC - Finding Right Track To Rip
Sep 19, 2010
I am playing a DVD with multiple copies of it's content on the disc. I am wanting to use VLC to try and find out which of the tracks is the right one for when I rip. How to do this?

The track pad on a Macbook Pro 8.3 is hypersensitive and interprets the lightest touch as a click. Even brushing the track pad with the sleeve of my shirt counts as a click. How do I decrease the sensitivity of the track pad?

I made the switch to all Ubuntu and I'm loving it.One of my favorite Windows features was in Windows Media Player. If I added an audio track to WMP, I could search within WMP (using internet) to find the album info.It was something like, right-click, "Find album info"

I have an mp4 video which includes a 5.1 audio stream, while I only have stereo speakers from my computer. It is hooked up to my receiver through the audio out (headphone) jack from the back of the machine. Anyway, I have a stereo audio stream for the video, but I can't figure out how to add the mp4a stream to the mp4.
I have checked out avidemux, but it doesn't seem to handle mp4a files. I don't want to transcribe the video, simply add the audio to the mp4 container. Does anyone know how to accomplish this in Ubuntu?
It seems that the mp4a is us encoded as AAC.

I'm sure this is simple but I haven't a clue how to do it other than System Monitor, which only displays for the total uptime.
I want to see what my total network data use is in Bytes (GB, MB, or KB) downloaded/uploaded for the month or any given date range.
Rationale is I want to use wireless tethering from my phone to replace my broadband connection at home. At the moment my phone contract gives me unlimited data access, however if I were to sign a new contract today this would drop to 2 GB a month with hefty overage charges.

I would like to have a way to keep track of my working hours easily.
Insert arrival and finish times and have the difference in decimal. For example, if I start at 8:00 and finish at 9:30, 1.5 should be added.
I tried to do this with Calc but couldn't figure it out. I set one column to have entrance time, another one to have exit time and a third one with the difference("=B2-C2"). The result is in a timestamp format and not decimal. If I use another cell to say something like HOURS(D2) it rounds the number rather than give a decimal(would give 9 for 9:20:00).
EDIT: solved by doing =24*(B2-C2)

I'm using LibreOffice 3.3.2 to open a document I received through work. The document is from MS Word in .doc format and has some track changes. I started using Libre Office to track my changes to the document but the only format I can save it in and retain my changes is .odt which is fine for me. However I would like to return this in .doc format.
It seems odd that LibreOffice happily opens a document with track changes but cannot save them back in that format.
Am I doing something wrong? I am using Edit>Changes>Record and then File>Save As.

what can i do if i want that smplayer selects the DTS/AC3 track from a multitrack MKV file by default? for example, i've added for some MKV an AC3 audio track in order to use it with my receiver but on the MKV the "track 0" is on AAC and the "track 1" is on AC3 and always smplayer starts with the "track 0" so smplayer will select the "track 1" doing nothing by me side.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 and it works like a charm, pretty much all over. However I seem to have problems using my M-Audio Fast Track Pro with all four channels - primarily when using Mixxx. I hate to switch between Win7 and Ubuntu just for the use of my VCI-100. Is there a way to have Fast Track Pro work? I tried almost any of the solutions found around here - but i simply cannot get it to work.

I need to trace/track email activity in my ubuntu server, normal i use this command tail -f /var/log/mail/mail.log, more or less. But the problem i am facing is that it take a long time to go through the entire log as my server recieves thousands of emails per day. is the a code that i can use to search email in the log, for instance need to find perfectpol@mycompany.com in the mail log.
Secondly; if there is an email that is blocking others on the queue how can it be remove or forced to go the mailbox. or to view its contents in order to decide whether to remove it or not.
Had a problem that are said not arrival or that are delivered as late as a day and sometime 6hours.

How would i do a hexdump in Ubuntu for the first track of a HDD? I am looking for a winhex-esque output if that makes sense. The first track has 63 sectors, each 512 bytes long. I tried
dd if=/dev/sda bs=1 count=512 | hexdump -C
but that only gave me what appears to be the MBR, or first sector of the HDD.

I've been experiencing an odd issue since I upgraded my main desktop to Lucid - namely, that the first track on several albums doesn't appear in the Rhythmbox library. The rest of the album will show up and play just fine. I installed Exaile to see if it was just a Rhythmbox bug, and the tracks appear in the library, but will not play (it just skips through the whole track, as it would if the MP3 codec isn't installed or configured correctly). Did a clean install of Lucid yesterday, which was also of no help.
The files are all .mp3, non-VBR encoding (320kbps, IIRC...not that it should really matter). They are stored in an NTFS partition I use to share data between Windows XP and my Linux installs.
Funny thing is, the tracks show up and play just fine in XP and on OpenSuse 11.3 (KDE version). It also works fine on my laptop, which is also dual-booting XP and Lucid, with the tunes stored on the Windows partition.
