Ubuntu :: Add-on For Rhythmbox Which Recognizes Track Info?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been experiencing an odd issue since I upgraded my main desktop to Lucid - namely, that the first track on several albums doesn't appear in the Rhythmbox library. The rest of the album will show up and play just fine. I installed Exaile to see if it was just a Rhythmbox bug, and the tracks appear in the library, but will not play (it just skips through the whole track, as it would if the MP3 codec isn't installed or configured correctly). Did a clean install of Lucid yesterday, which was also of no help.
The files are all .mp3, non-VBR encoding (320kbps, IIRC...not that it should really matter). They are stored in an NTFS partition I use to share data between Windows XP and my Linux installs.
Funny thing is, the tracks show up and play just fine in XP and on OpenSuse 11.3 (KDE version). It also works fine on my laptop, which is also dual-booting XP and Lucid, with the tunes stored on the Windows partition.
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 yesterday. When I opened rhythmbox music player, I dragged over some mp3 files to play. It asked me if I wanted to install mp3 support. Naturally I selected yes, as I have several times before. Everything appeared to install correctly and music started playing. The first track finished fine. The second track made it roughly 20 seconds and then the sound stopped. I switched back to the desktop that rhythmbox was on (I had been browsing firefox on the other desktop) and noticed that the progress bar for the song was moving very fast and would continue doing so on every song. The progress bar would cycle through the length of a 3:40 song in about 6-8 seconds. But there was no sound.
I should also note that the reason I used rhythmbox (RB) was because I tried to install Amarok 2.2, which did install, but I couldn't get the program to work when I opened it. So I decided to settle for rhythmbox. So the first time I encountered this error on RB was the first time I used the program, and the first time I used RB was after I had installed Amarok 2.2 and couldn't get it to work. Idk if this is relevant or not, but I figured I would include it anyway.
Anyway, I have tried a number of potential solutions:
1) Changing the hardware profile for my multimedia.
2) Making sure my bios is set up properly. I have a soundcard, so I disabled onboard audio.
3) I thought maybe Pulseaudio was the problem, but didn't try to resolve it because this thread from he Ubuntu forums appears to be outdated for Karmic Koala, so I didn't take my chances using it.
4) Uninstalling Amarok, however, I couldn't locate all the dependencies to uninstall them
5) Installing "libxine1-ffmpeg" manually since another forum on ubuntuforums had recommended that. However the deb-installer failed with this output
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libavcodec1d (>= 0.cvs20070307)
6) Booting to the LiveCD for Kubuntu (Kx) 8.04-2, Kubuntu 9.10, and Ubuntu (Ux) 9.10. I went through the process of opening RB, loading music, installing mp3 support. For Kx 8.04-2, I got an error telling me I needed to install "libxine1-ffmpeg" manually, which I did via deb-installer. Everything worked great. For Kx 9.10 and Ux 9.10, I got the already mentioned error about the unsatisfiable dependency. So I could go back to Kx 8.04-02 (which many of my friends here at LFO know this has been my favorite distro+version for almost two years now). However, I can't be stuck with it just because of some minor issues.
I should also note that video on firefox (e.g.; ......com) is very slow and usually greys out firefox until it stops working. Yes, I have installed flash player and jre 6.0 via synaptec. :D So this is apparently an overall multimedia problem, which doesn't surprise me because it seems that both Ubuntu AND Kubuntu have been having more multimedia problems since fall of 2009 (at least based on what I have gathered from forums while searching out my current problem). Whether that is related to the 9.10 releases and later, or not, I don't know.
Another option I have is to try Mint, which I have had very good experiences with in the past. But I don't want to leave the *buntu family as I am very partial to it and really enjoy the time-saving convenience of the deb-installer.

I changed the case of one letter ('N' to 'n') in a track name using Rhythmbox and the result is a file which is 7727 bytes smaller than the original (I saved a copy of the original file before editing the track name). The file is in ogg/vorbis format (160 Kb/s). I changed the track name back and the file size didn't change. However, the contents of the file are still drastically different (vastly more changed than merely the letter in the track name).I'm worried that Rhythmbox is doing something dreadful like decoding the file, changing the track name, and then completely re-encoding the file from scratch (meaning it runs the decoded audio through the lossy encoder to regenerate the file). Does anyone know whether or not Rhythmbox is doing this when the user edits the meta data (like the track name, artist, etc.)?

Everytime I start the program up, it builds the library fresh from the folders, so any changes I've made to track numbers, song titles, artists, etc is not retained from the previous section. Is there a way to permanently change this time of info in Rhythmbox, or is the another decent Linux music player that has this capability? Btw, I have Gnome.

View 9 Replies View Relatedwe were watching Clint Eastwood in Pink Cadillac on DVD. Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.
Here's what I typically get when I first start it up (though it starts & runs OK):

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.
EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff. If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.
how Rhythmbox creates the "Open Rhythmbox" button in the Nautilus Explorer window ?I would like to create my own button that does something else (that deals with an iPod being plugged in).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have used Ubuntu and Fedora and am familiar with Linux for about two years now. I have recently installed Arch Linux on one of my computers, and I like the distro so far. However, I am having an issue with my USB hub. When I connect a mouse and keyboard to the hub, the computer only recognizes input from the device that I plug in first when using a window manager (the keyboard always works when I am not in a window manager). If I disconnect one device, the other device starts working. Both devices appear in dmesg when I disconnect and reconnect them. So the computer is recognizing the devices independently, but input from one device is not received. I have tried this on both Gnome and Fluxbox, with the same result. If I plug both devices directly into the computer's USB ports, both devices work at the same time. The hub works on a Windows 7 system and on an Ubuntu system, so the hub is not faulty.
More information: My keyboard is Microsoft Razer Reclusa keyboard. My mouse is a Logitech Wireless Mouse M215.
Below is the dmesg output that I think is relevant to this issue. Here is the output I get when I plug in my USB hub (without anything plugged into it), then plug in the mouse to the hub, and finally plug in the keyboard to the hub:
Code: usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 80

hub 1-4.1:1.0: activate --> -28
usb 1-4.1.3: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 83 .....
Interesting to note is that the line that say "usb 1-4.2: reset full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 94" increases in the number of times it appears over time. This happens in both scenarios, with the address number changing appropriately. So for example, when everything is plugged in, and I type dmesg, the line appears five times. Then when I type dmesg again, it appears 11 times. etc., for each subsequent dmesg call until the device is disconnected.

my HP Pavilion a335w on board NIC stopped working. I've tried putting in another NIC in the PCI slots #1 & 2 of the three available and the system does not pickup the card. I thought it was because it was an old 3com 3c905b and was not supported.I took the box to Best Buy and purchased a new Linksys card and had them install it.The Geek Squad told me that the Motherboard was bad, no charge.I took it to a refurbishing store and the very patient gentlemen tried to get a Netgear FA310TX card to be recognized with no luck.I took the Netgear FA310TX card home and put in slot #3 and booted up with the install disk. View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had Fedora 11 running on my PC since shortly after release. I have a DVD-ROM as the Master on the single IDE port on my MoBo and a DVD-RAM as the slave on that port. I also have 4 ea SATA 500GB HDDs using JBOD configuration on the MoBo. When I first installed F 11 I noticed that if I dupped a CD the blank icon would stay on my desktop, even though I had removed it. Also it did not "see" that I had put a new blank in the burner. I would have to reboot to correct. However the system would recognize an audio cd, play it rip or whatever.
Now the first problem I think has gone away but neither drive when I put an audio cd into them will recognize it. The light on the drive will come on and then start flashing as normal, but nothing happens. When I check to see if I can manually mount it, the system comes back with No Media in drive. Anyone have any ideas? This seems to have happened I'd say about 1.5 weeks ago was the last time I know it worked. I suspect an update possibly "broke" something. Any reliable knowledge base as to what actually transpires between the time I put a CD in the drive and the icon pops up and it starts playing or whatever.
I made a mistake installing the most recent distro of Ubuntu. When choosing where to install the loader, I selected "Windows 7 (loader)" instead of the proper default option. Now when I select Windows 7 in GRUB, it just brings me right back to GRUB.
However, my Windows installation and all the files are still present on the disk. The recovery disk doesn't recognize the Windows installation, but all the files are clearly present. I was even able to recover my most important files onto a USB drive using the file browser in the recovery disk. How can I correct this mistake? I need to be able to boot into Windows 7 again.
