If I download a .deb file then when I run dpkg all files install in the correct directories.But with a tar.bz2 file when I run tar xvjf it installs in its current directory. How can I make a tar.bz2 file install into the appropriate directory?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThere is some issue with the latest version of LinuxDC++ (version: 1.2.0~pre1~bzr Core version: 0.75). I have upgraded to the latest version a few days back from launchpad repos due to the frequent crashes and system hang-ups. My complete and incomplete downloads folder are same. While my download was going on, LinuxDC++ deleted all the files from the downloads folder.
After about half an hour of tweaking, I updated my database using updatedb, and found my files in ~/.dc++/Filelists/anantwqqwe.BMIU2NFCFXB7ERTSG62PRSQPRJIN63A56EEGO6Q . What does that supposed to mean and why its doing this way? This is the second time this has happened to me, the last time I was unable to locate the deleted files on my system and I suppose they were not there. I use 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10(maverick).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI mistakenly moved the /home/user/Desktop file to another location so now when my desktop starts it used the entire contents of my /home/user/ directory (except for the hidden contents) to create icons all over my desktop.
I have restored the Desktop folder to the correct location but it ignores it now and continues to show every file under /home/user as an icon.
How do I reset it to point to the original Desktop folder?

I'm looking for a script or a bittorrent client which is able to move a file after downloading and placing it in a specific folder depending on the file type. E.g. moving a newly downloaded movie to "Videos" and an ISO-file to "Files".
I feel as if i have used a client with this functionality before but can't remember the name.
Since I at the moment use Transmission as my bittorrent client a script would also work since Transmission can run it after finishing the download.
I'm setting up a svn server and would like users to share home dir. One problem is how to get sshd to identify the correct rsa key for the different users that shares the same .ssh folder. Will sshd even look for the key in a folder that isn't owned by the user trying to login?

having a bit of trouble getting domains to resolve to their own folder properly on my new server.
this is a plesk/centos server that is pretty much out of the box.
Problem I have is that all the domain names I add to Plesk, are all pulling files from /var/www/html . All 5 domains Ive added each got their own /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/* folders created ...
Is there something I am missing in order to have the server grab files from each domains respective folder?
What I noticed was that if I edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and add the virtualhost lines to it, then the one domain name resolves properly.
i replaced my domain with 'mydomain.com'

So I recently installed Lubuntu on my netbook and I have it all working except for one hitch - when I download something in Chromium (such as a .deb or a .odt file) when I click on the finished download in the bar at the bottom of Chromium it does not open the file in gdebi/abiword as it should. Also when I right click on a file and select "show in folder" it does not work...
Not sure if this is an issue with Chromium or LXDE/PCMan but I figured it couldn't hurt to post here asking about it.

i use virtual hosts to develop several web applications. These are located in my home folder under /home/user/projects/project After a fresh installation, i always get a 403 forbidden error. After googling and reading on this forum, several solutions are mentioned for this problem. But i can hardly believe putting using a chmod 755 on my home folder is a correct solution. I am using Centos 5. I got one error unexpectedly after some configuration for rsync and folder settings. The error i am getting is "Serve Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/gdm but does not exist. Please correct the configuration and restart GDM." after rebooting.
I tried to resolve the issue by setting permission for folder /var/gdm to 755. but the problem is still not resolved.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWell Ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition looks great and I am way over the plain old xp, plus Ubuntu is safer and sexier. I have downloaded 10.10 desktop and it saves as a .iso, then when I open it it runs my cd burner. I have it saved on a CD and my portable hard drive. I can not run the .iso or use the wubi. I have extracted the .iso and tried running the usb creator program but it does not work. Does anyone have a solution other than buying the ubuntu cd?

I log into the web version of either pop server and there are hundreds of messages. I have so far deleted both po account settings and put them back, tried both ssl and not ssl, unchecked leave messages on server, removed and reinstalled thunderbird.

I've figured most issues I've had via Google I guess about a week ago, everything I download whether it be from Firefox Or Transmissions won't show up on the desktop screen. When I few the folder in Nautilus, same thing. I can see the files with the 'dir' terminal command. I did try using 'sudo' to lauch Nautilus and was able to see my files. If I drag them out of the Nautilus window and on to my desktop, they appear. Keep in mind, I know the files are in MY directory and are owned by me. Any clue to what is causing this and how to fix it?

I am running a dual boot with Ubuntu 10.04 and vista. Anyway both systems are very healthy as far as I can see. I have a very fast internet connection at 50Mbs. Under vista I can pull around 4 - 5MBs where under Ubuntu I can only get about 350KBs. I have a single PC hard wired into a Netgear WNR3500 router/firewall. Anyway, I was wondering if there is anything I can do with my packet sizes or receive windows to help it along? I am only using a very small part of my available bandwidth obviously. Is there a kind soul here who could tell me how to optimize my internet connection in Lucid?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to download some software stuff off of the Ubuntu Software Center, but every time I try it tells me "Waiting for other software managers to quit", and just sits there at 0%. I've been waiting for 45 minutes for it to start the download of Pidgin.I looked in the Processes of System Monitor, and I dunno what other Software manager would be running. The only processes that are running are System Monitor... and then the process"software-center" under the Waiting Channel tab goes from 0 to "do_wait" to "poll_schedule_timeout", and its status goes from Running to Sleeping.
View 9 Replies View RelatedLast night I was using Ubuntu just downloading music with Limewire and it was all working fine until I clicked on a a song to download and a message popped up saying something like "This computer doesn't have a file for Limewire downloads", I am not exactly sure on how it said it but it had something to do with the File System. Since it was so late I just decided to leave it like that and deal with it in the morning.
I woke up and when I started Ubuntu and it says "File System not found", and something about pressing Control-D. Sorry for the lack of info I just don't remember exactly what it said, but like I mentioned above it has something to do with the File System that apparently isnt working. I decided to re-install Ubuntu and it worked great, I am using ubuntu right now but it doesn't have any of the setting and apps etc etc that I had on the other one.
When I restart the computer and the dual-boot menu comes up it has 2 types of ubuntu, this one that works and the other one that everytime I click on it it keeps showing me the "File System not found". Is there any way to fix my old version of Ubuntu 9.10? And if I cant then how can I delete the damaged version of Ubuntu so it doesn't come up in the Dual-Boot screen? And I also have Windows 7 on it, how can I delete that one also?
