When running Ubuntu 10.4 from my Kingston 8GB usb stick, I can not read other usb data drives!
I can verify the USB ports still work because I use a mouse and keyboard.
I re-installed the OS, works now.
heres what happenned:
1. had working xp install on 320 gb hard disk with only one partition.
2. backed up and used easeus to shrink and create new partition on same hard drive.
3. tried to install from a working live cd but got medium not found error.
4. looked for fix but didnt find it so i used wubi to install it to the partition i created.
5. worked but annoyingly slow so looked for guide to switch from wubi to full install.
6. followed guide and it installed to a new partition i made with gparted and it formatted that one to ext4 but i still had the wubi install which i didnt want. (btw, non-wubi is much > wubi install).
7. went to xp to uninstall wubi, delete wubi partition, and grow full ubuntu install partition with easeus. easeus requires reboot.
8. restart comp to find an error that said no partition found and something else about grub rescue.
9. try live cds but hard drive not detected and tried win7 and xp but they didnt even get into setup
10. make plan: get bro to format my hardd disk using his compyter so i csn try ubuntu onw more time
i got a bunch of different types of errors but im really close to giving up on it entirely.
Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.
I can't seem to find this anywhere. I have burned Debian 5.06 for i386 and trying to login when running the live cd. What is the username and password to get in?

I have a windows install that is totally hosed, bluescreens, etc. I want to try to force mount it from Ubuntu to get whatever data I can, but it won't allow me to mount. It keeps telling me to run chkdsk /f and reboot twice. But that's not possible. I was wondering if there are any ntfs tools for Ubuntu or any data recovery tools I can use to get what I can from this drive.

I open ubuntu trial version from cd but i can not access my hdd. I find my hdd in system->administration->disk utility but I can not go anywhere from there.
When I solve this problem I would like to try ubuntu as my os but i am worried that some programs may not work on it . Like for example my bamboo tablet, fm2010, adobe ilustrator, autocad.
I have been able to create the ISO, but I cannot boot due to the data dir not found error.
I have tried using "from=", different CD/DVD readers and different media to no avail.

when booted from linux live cd, all partitions of hard disk become accessible without any restriction. How to block this?
I have a Windows laptop that isn't booting up anymore for some reason Safe Mode doesn't even work. Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently had a problem with the hdd on my netbook. The hdd died and now I need a new one it happens So, I decided to take a plunge into Ubuntu. I was able to run the Live USB with Ubuntu 11.04, bypassing the hdd for about a day and this morning it stopped working. I have tried to reboot using the Live USB and even re-installed the Live USB. The process to load Ubuntu looks like it is stuck at a screen with the ubuntu logo and 5 dots. At first, the 5 dots changed color as the program was loading, now the dots do not change.
Right now, the program does not load up from the Live USB and I am at a loss as to why. Also, if it is possible to save settings from USB session to USB session, how does one accomplish that? I am still very new to Ubuntu so I am a little out of my element. I am trying to install Ubuntu on a HP Mini 210 with 2 GB RAM and a 2 Gb Kingston Datatraveler USB.
i just finish setting up my new file server with two hardisk(80gig for first hd for my filesystem and 2nd 250 gig for my data files) now iam wondering can i umount my second drive "live" and replace a new hardisk without shutingdown my computer? can i damage my hardisk? i know there is a hotswapble hardisk. but i my case i cant not afford a upgrade in my unit(clone pc only) but guy i try several time to change live hardisk without turning off my pc? i just umount the 2nd disk and insert a new disk and nothing happend wrong in my system?

I've tried a number of things to resolve the issue (tried using xforcevesa, reburning the cd etc) and none of these worked. Looking around on the forums, it would appear that my video card (HD 5770) has little support and I tried all the suggestions I found concerning my card. Could this be it? I don't have another graphics card so changing it isn't an option. No options show under Compiz>live wallpaper>galaxy live wallpaper. Has anyone been able to get the Galaxy Live wallpaper running in 11.04? I had to go into the compiz unity settings to disable the super key from activating the unity launcher shortcuts.
View 4 Replies View Relatedim not sure if this is normal or not, i never tried a beta before, always wait until normal release. this is the 5 version of ubuntu that i will use with this laptop. 8.04 some hardware was not detected, screen and graphics not good and i had to use windows driver for wireless 8.10 the wireless improved, used backported drivers instead of windows drivers 9.04 wireless working, all hardware detected 9.10 screen and graphics working good, match lcd resolution 10.04 the live cd stop in the middle at the logo screen with dots, never one live cd fail to load, but again, never tried a beta before. stay with 9.1 or try another distro? the bad thing is i dont know how i can to fix it, or get more information useful to anyone

So I went into the Live CD and am trying to reinstall/update grub from the terminal in the live cd however I can't get an internet connection. My DLink G122 isn't recognized (no lights) so I tried hardwiring the ethernet and eth0 is there but it fails to connect. I installed the Broadcom driver but now when I click on Hardware Drivers I only see a display driver listed.

I need a Live CD that has Adobe Flash installed working with Firefox. I need the Live CD for my vacation so I can use it to book hotel rooms using the live cd on public Windows pcs which are probably infested with all sorts of nasty things. Using my credit card with IE on those machines is out of the question. My worry is keyloggers and other things that can copy my credit card info.
Is it possible to install Adobe Flash on a live cd or is there a workaround? Should I use a different approach? I've heard of using firefox on a usb flash disc but not in any details. I'm not bringing my own laptop. In that case I wouldn't have a problem, I guess. I have to use machines in hotel business centers or internet cafees.
Does anybody got Creative Live Ultra VF0060 web cam worked on Ubuntu 10.04.2? This one got recognized by system when I use lsusbs. But either cheese or some other software doesn't recognize that.

I have the .rpm file stored on my local drive, navigating to it and running "yum instal flash....." worked perfectly on F15 LXDE. Similar (but use apt get) worked for Ubuntu 10.10 Live also. Checking "aboutlugins" and listed is parole-player.so and IcedTeaPlugin.so nothing else. Browsing to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and the only file contained is the libflashplayer.so Should I not see the two listed above as being installed by Mozilla in there? And why is the flash player from there not being recognised?

What is the correct way of partitioning USB drive? - FAT or FAT 32....Most Live USB creators (unetbootin/LiLi Live/Usb Creator) recognize only FAT32...
I dont want a Linux filesystem (ext2,ext3 or 4or reiserfs)for my USB as it is not portable across many systems as MS OSes do not read them..Also I had little success in booting a USB when I partitioned it using ext2..I read somewhere that ext2 will not reduce the life of the USB drive compared to other fs.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 64-bit. It has a Dell 1397 Wireless card with Broadcom BCM 4312 hardware. This is proven by running lspci in Terminal. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and burned a disc of it. I used System>Administration>USB Startup Disc Creator to make a Live USB from a 4GB flash drive. I plugged it in and my computer booted into Ubuntu with no trouble. The only problem is that I can't connect to my wireless network. The problem is that no matter how I install the Broadcom STA driver, it just says that the driver is activated but not actively in use. I've used Synaptic Package Manager, Jockey, and even Terminal. I've tried running

in Terminal, but nothing seems to happen. In Ubuntu, my computer acts as though it has no wireless card, but the wired connection is fine (except for the inconvenience of connecting with a cable). In Windows 7, the wireless connection is fine.

Then I updated it and I installed wireless drivers kmod-wl equivalent to my kernel version that is 2.6.35.6-45. I've a pavilion dv6 with a broadcom ach. for networking. So the next step was installing kmod-nvidia for my nvidia geforce but after rebooting my never allow me to log in! I can se the tipical blue-white progress bar loading nvidia drivers but not else!
my screen freeze itself after the progress bar became white. I would resolve by rescue mode but I've installed fc14 64 b using a usb-pen drive and I find no way to do this from live version.
When I run suse 11.3 live from CD I can connect to the Internet, but when I install it I can't get it to connect.
