I am now trying to install Ubuntu 10.10, alongside pre-installed Windows 7.I am installing through the Live CD. When I boot using the live cd, it takes me to the ubuntu desktop as usual but the mousepad is not working at all. I used keyboard to navigate and click the install Ubuntu icon. However in the step where you are required to specify partitions, I can not specify the size ofifferent partitions ad the mouespad is not working and hence, I can not use the slider.How should I now proceed with installation. Could it be some driver related issues. If Ubuntu was installed, I could have installed drivers or tried solutions as suggested in some other threads (changing some config files etc.). But how to proceed in Live CD.

In my laptop HP Pavillion DV7 last week I added the mouse for some work and after finishing it I removed it. But after that my laptops sensor stopped working whenever I login. wht I mean is now at the login prompt the laptops mousepad works fine but after I press login the pointer gets freeze and doesn't work at all. View 2 Replies View RelatedLive CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.
I have 2 laptops a Dell & a Toshiba. Both have NVidia GeForce FX Go 5200 cards. I first did an upgrade on the Dell and that ended in a BSOD. I used the Alt CD for that. I just received the Live CD in the mail. I put it in the Dell and ended with a BSOD. I figured as much. What got me is that I couldn't get 9.1 to boot after that. It kept trying and would shut done. After the 4th time it booted. I hope it continues.
I thought I'd try it in the Toshiba and it went fine LIVE. I can't install it on that machine as it's my recording only lappy. 10.04 is pretty but can't tell much else.
First, the official download page is 32k download. I've NEVER had that slow of a speed before. I've downloaded and used Ubuntu since Drake. The only desktop iso for AMD64 is 698k (Official download).
I've downloaded that image for AMD64 10.04 from two download locations and burned the CD. When I boot, I only get the install option in a non-graphical environment. No LiveCD button.
I have managed to install Ubuntu 10.40 LTS over the weekend and I have got it working... sort of.
My only remaining issue is that I am unable to boot into the Hard Drive where Ubuntu is installed unless I boot from the Live CD and select 'Boot from first hard disk'.
I have checked to make sure my boot priority sequence is correct, and it is, but without the Live CD, if I try to boot I get to the 'load operating system' screen and nothing would happen from there, just a blinking cursor.
I am not dual booting, but I do have 3 internal drives. I have made sure that the drive I am trying to boot to is in fact the drive that Ubuntu has been installed on. I also checked to see if Grub was installed which it didn't appear to be, but has since been installed.
My basic cpecs are:
Processor: AMD Phenom II 550 DualCore 3
Video Card: Gigabyte ATI HD5450 512MB
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-770T-USB3
I have downloaded 64bit desktop CD Iso installer form ubuntu site. when i boot the live CD, i get the first black screen of keyboard and man symbols at the bottom. then the ubuntu splash screen and it is stuck there for ever. also my HDD activity is over since no CD derive blinks and HDD led blinks. if i press CTRL+ALT+backspace i get a text screen with several error messes most of them input output error and errors like unable to create /tmp. View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently had a problem with the hdd on my netbook. The hdd died and now I need a new one it happens So, I decided to take a plunge into Ubuntu. I was able to run the Live USB with Ubuntu 11.04, bypassing the hdd for about a day and this morning it stopped working. I have tried to reboot using the Live USB and even re-installed the Live USB. The process to load Ubuntu looks like it is stuck at a screen with the ubuntu logo and 5 dots. At first, the 5 dots changed color as the program was loading, now the dots do not change.
Right now, the program does not load up from the Live USB and I am at a loss as to why. Also, if it is possible to save settings from USB session to USB session, how does one accomplish that? I am still very new to Ubuntu so I am a little out of my element. I am trying to install Ubuntu on a HP Mini 210 with 2 GB RAM and a 2 Gb Kingston Datatraveler USB.
I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid RC a couple of days ago and have been trying to work through a few problems since. One of these problems is printing with my Brother DCP506CN printer which was working in Karmic. However, I just can't seem to get it going in Lucid. I have followed the Brother linux install procedure, which worked for the the last few Ubuntu releases, but not for this one it seems.

On Karmic, wifi worked flawlessly "out of the box"�no windows drivers or anything needed. I have checked under Administration/hardware drivers; it tells me "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system." Cabled internet access through my wifi router works fine. How to get wifi up and running under Lucid. Despite having used Karmic for a while, I am relatively new to the inner workings of Ubuntu / linux systems, and really don't know where to go from here.

I'm having a bit of trouble installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my system. When I boot into the installer my screen just goes blank. I've tried a number of things to resolve the issue (tried using xforcevesa, reburning the cd etc) and none of these worked. Looking around on the forums, it would appear that my video card (HD 5770) has little support and I tried all the suggestions I found concerning my card. Could this be it? I don't have another graphics card so changing it isn't an option. View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble with dead keys in Emacs on Ubuntu Lucid and I'm at my wits' end. Using a standard Norwegian keyboard layout, and dead keys work fine in all Gnome applications. But Emacs just spits out messages about undefined keybindings when I use dead key combinations, for instance for tilde (~): "<dead_tilde> is undefined". This is super-annoying, since I use Emacs a lot, and I need some way to fix this.
What I've tried so far: Loading the 'iso-transl' library in Emacs seemingly makes the dead keys work, but it's not consistent across modes (works for plain text, though), and I didn't need to do this before. Also, loading this breaks Emacs' latin-1-prefix input method, for some reason. Fiddling with keyboard-preferences, iBus, im-switch xim/none/ibus, etc. Removing ~/.xinput.d directory. Fiddling with various environment variables: GTK_IM_METHOD, GTK_IM_MODULES, XMODIFIERS
Of course, I'm testing this in Emacs started with '-Q' to elminiate problems that might be caused by my own rather extensive set of initialization files. Using dead keys in Emacs has never been a problem until I upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid.
I am trying to build a server on AWS using the latest Lucid image from Canonical. I load java and tomcat and when I deploy my webapp it runs fine except for when I try to upload files using commons fileupload. Then I get the following error.

the javax.servlet.context.tempdir points to /var/lib/tomcat6/work/Catalina/localhost/myapp which exists and to test I was able to create a new file there in my code.
This want happening with the karmic build of tomcat. as far as I know everything else is the same.
im not sure if this is normal or not, i never tried a beta before, always wait until normal release. this is the 5 version of ubuntu that i will use with this laptop. 8.04 some hardware was not detected, screen and graphics not good and i had to use windows driver for wireless 8.10 the wireless improved, used backported drivers instead of windows drivers 9.04 wireless working, all hardware detected 9.10 screen and graphics working good, match lcd resolution 10.04 the live cd stop in the middle at the logo screen with dots, never one live cd fail to load, but again, never tried a beta before. stay with 9.1 or try another distro? the bad thing is i dont know how i can to fix it, or get more information useful to anyone

So I went into the Live CD and am trying to reinstall/update grub from the terminal in the live cd however I can't get an internet connection. My DLink G122 isn't recognized (no lights) so I tried hardwiring the ethernet and eth0 is there but it fails to connect. I installed the Broadcom driver but now when I click on Hardware Drivers I only see a display driver listed.

I just upgraded to Lucid Lynx, and like most people, I'm getting the black screen during boot. So, I went into the grub edit screen, and I tried every variation of the nomodeset fix I could find. So far, nothing has worked. I don't know what graphics card I have, but it's always given me problems.

heres what happenned:
1. had working xp install on 320 gb hard disk with only one partition.
2. backed up and used easeus to shrink and create new partition on same hard drive.
3. tried to install from a working live cd but got medium not found error.
4. looked for fix but didnt find it so i used wubi to install it to the partition i created.
5. worked but annoyingly slow so looked for guide to switch from wubi to full install.
6. followed guide and it installed to a new partition i made with gparted and it formatted that one to ext4 but i still had the wubi install which i didnt want. (btw, non-wubi is much > wubi install).
7. went to xp to uninstall wubi, delete wubi partition, and grow full ubuntu install partition with easeus. easeus requires reboot.
8. restart comp to find an error that said no partition found and something else about grub rescue.
9. try live cds but hard drive not detected and tried win7 and xp but they didnt even get into setup
10. make plan: get bro to format my hardd disk using his compyter so i csn try ubuntu onw more time
i got a bunch of different types of errors but im really close to giving up on it entirely.
I have a problem to get it to work. The installer seems to read the preseed-file alright, and some of the values defined in the preseed-file are taken into account. The questions regarding locale, keyboard layout and time zone are answered using the preseed-file, but in the user account creation-step the process goes wrong. The Full name-field is obtained from the preseed-file, but the login-name is generated by the installer and not read from the preseed. Also the password-fields are empty and not filled in. Also the script that I've defined with preseed/late_command is never run.
I tried searching the forums but no-one had exactly this kind of problem, so it makes me think that this has to be some trivial error I'm doing. Could someone take a look at these configs and see if there's something wrong with them? How should I continue resolving this?

I tried a while getting a live system working with encrypted persistence. The command

The most confusing line is "Warning: cryptsetup is unavailable" - I took a look into the scripts, it checks if cryptsetup and askpass is executable if not this message. But:
I mounted the hdd-img file local and took a look: all binaries there.
So I tried a lot getting it working on boot time. I tried it with live-tools from testing, from wheezy and last but not least installed and pinned live-tools to unstable. Always the same. askpass isn't executable on boot time before mounting the persistence.

I installed gparted on live operating system and when i rebooted gparted was not installed.
Before going too far it may be simplest to answer the question "Does Live USB Creator create a working system for Windows 7?" If not then don't bother reading further. I have installed Live USB Creator on a 32-bit Windows 7 computer but when I run it I can't for the life of me get it to recognize any type of drive. I've read and tried the instructions of using the command line with the --force [drive]: but that has no effect Maybe I am misunderstanding this whole program. From what I read about it, this program will create a working Windows system, place it on a USB stick and then run Windows on a different computer. In my application I would like to run it on my work computer which has Windows XP. If this application should work then will I have complete access to all my computer drives and files and the network/internet? I imagine I would need to install all necessary programs so that I could use them in Windows 7 and would I need to install those programs on the USB stick or could they be on a local hard drive?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen i insert the Live CD, whether I choose memory test, try without installing or install Ubuntu, the computer seems to continue to load without a signal going to the monitor, as if a frequency or resolution unsupported by the card or monitor was chosen.
I had a similar issue with 9.10, but this only happened after the system was installed when you got to the login screen. I can't find a 'safe graphics' option on this live CD as I could on Karmic. Are there any cheat codes I can use to enable some sort of safe graphics mode?
I am downloading the alternate installer now and going to try installing using this method. I've never done this before, do I have to setup a desktop myself using the command line with this? My computer is an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard with 2GB RAM, a GeForce 9600GT graphics card, and a DGM 23" 1920x1080 widescreen monitor connected via DVI. Also I am installing the 64 bit version, although I don't reckon this is a 64 bit only issue.
I have no video at all booting to Lucid from Live CD. When the CD first boots, I see what appears to be Plymouth, then the monitor goes into standby. The booting process appears to continue, but without a screen to look at, its not much use.
