Feb 24, 2010I have been able to create the ISO, but I cannot boot due to the data dir not found error.
I have tried using "from=", different CD/DVD readers and different media to no avail.

First time I've done this in awhile Upgrading my Slackware64 -current VM, following the standard routine that has always worked in the past -
Code:
slackpkg clean-system
slackpkg install-new
The clean-system removed 2 packages -
util-linux-ng
eggdbus
Installpkg will no longer work, complaining that the rev command is not found. The problem hit with the removal of util-linux-ng. I cp'd util-linux to ~/. Extracted with tar and executed the doinstall. Fixed.
Using Slackware 12.2 Also using live CDs Slax 6.1.1 and knoppix 6
Is there a program I can use to send a fax from my computer with Slackware or any of these live CDs?
Is there any special hardware that I would need?
When running Ubuntu 10.4 from my Kingston 8GB usb stick, I can not read other usb data drives!
I can verify the USB ports still work because I use a mouse and keyboard.
I re-installed the OS, works now.
I'm having a problem installing Tor. I've installed it successfully a few times before thanks the excellent guide at: [URL] The error I'm having is when I request the gpg key:
Code:
ocean@ubuntu:~$ gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv 886DDD89
gpg: requesting key 886DDD89 from hkp server keys.gnupg.net
Then after quite a delay all I get now (instead of "OK") is:
Code:
gpgkeys: HTTP fetch error 7: couldn't connect to host
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
gpg: Total number processed: 0
When trying to install fedora with a 4gb USB stick, I get after partitioning the hard drive the following message: "The installation programme has failed to mount image #1 because it's not on the harddrive. I'm a dutchmen, so I hope this translation is correct.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI created a Fedora 12 live-usb. Want to use it to discover hardware compatibility on PC's that are candidate for Linux. I tried to "yum install hwbrowser" while in a live-usb session and I get a message that hwbrowser can't be found. What gives? Is hwbrowser no longer available? On another machine I ran hwbrowser and found that the answer on the video driver from hwbrowser is different than from the command line.
hwbrowser yields >>>> driver: i915
the answer I received from the command line interface >>>>> grep Chipset /var/log/Xorg.0.log driver: i810.
Risk to native OS from Live CD?
when booted from linux live cd, all partitions of hard disk become accessible without any restriction. How to block this?
I have a windows install that is totally hosed, bluescreens, etc. I want to try to force mount it from Ubuntu to get whatever data I can, but it won't allow me to mount. It keeps telling me to run chkdsk /f and reboot twice. But that's not possible. I was wondering if there are any ntfs tools for Ubuntu or any data recovery tools I can use to get what I can from this drive.
View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday, my windows xp died and I can not do anything with that, but I would like to rescue my important files from hdd before format. I open ubuntu trial version from cd but i can not access my hdd. I find my hdd in system->administration->disk utility but I can not go anywhere from there.
When I solve this problem I would like to try ubuntu as my os but i am worried that some programs may not work on it . Like for example my bamboo tablet, fm2010, adobe ilustrator, autocad.
I installed fedora on one of my three hard drives and it seems that something went wrong with the other two. Fedora recognizes the other drives but it seems the data on those drives is not there anymore. The below images are screen shots from my computer folder and disk utility program. I tried to look through Fedora documentation but I did not find a solution to my case.

When using the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD I had no problem connecting through my wired network connection. After installation all I can find is the Wireless connection.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A70 laptop. A check of the system shows no eth0 available. What do I need to do to get the wired connection back again?
Also, if the wired worked before installation, why doesn't it work afterwards?
I have a Windows laptop that isn't booting up anymore for some reason Safe Mode doesn't even work. Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want a log or live data that discloses the system calls an application makes. I have used strace but can't find a guide for it that is decent. I'm interested in knowing the calls made after user intervention like opening a menu and so on. If you run (strace application_name) it is static. What good is this? When does strace make this file? When is this log produced?
View 4 Replies View Relatedheres what happenned:
1. had working xp install on 320 gb hard disk with only one partition.
2. backed up and used easeus to shrink and create new partition on same hard drive.
3. tried to install from a working live cd but got medium not found error.
4. looked for fix but didnt find it so i used wubi to install it to the partition i created.
5. worked but annoyingly slow so looked for guide to switch from wubi to full install.
6. followed guide and it installed to a new partition i made with gparted and it formatted that one to ext4 but i still had the wubi install which i didnt want. (btw, non-wubi is much > wubi install).
7. went to xp to uninstall wubi, delete wubi partition, and grow full ubuntu install partition with easeus. easeus requires reboot.
8. restart comp to find an error that said no partition found and something else about grub rescue.
9. try live cds but hard drive not detected and tried win7 and xp but they didnt even get into setup
10. make plan: get bro to format my hardd disk using his compyter so i csn try ubuntu onw more time
i got a bunch of different types of errors but im really close to giving up on it entirely.

Well, I noticed this by accident while trying to use dash for the rc.d scripts. I messed up and forgot to link it to /bin, and as such, the system failed to boot properly and would not respond. I rebooted (forcefully), but this messed up the filesystem. I booted the sw64 install DVD and tried to mount it, and it would not mount.
I tried to run fsck on it, but it said that fsck.jfs in NOT available. Eventually I booted my old slamd64 12.1 DVD and it had fsck.jfs. Any reason why this rather useful program was removed ? Or is it a bug, or is my DVD messed up? I guess I should just keep around another live CD, I do keep knoppix, but it boots so slow and I don't understand it at all, it's so hard to do anything with it.
