Ubuntu :: Update Manager Doesn't Open?
Jun 9, 2010
I was trying to update the latest files of 10.04. During the update process suddenly my computer hanged. That was a hardware failure and my hard disk lost connection. When I solved it and boot into Ubuntu it just didn't open. A mark is shown on the above task bar that said "A problem occurred when checking for update."

Normally Update Manager always finds the update to the next version of Ubuntu. It still hasn't given me any notion whatoever. I allready changed the settings from regular to LTS, but nothing changes. There are updates to the kernel, but I cannot download them, so I'm kinda stuck here.

I have Update Manager set to check for updates on a daily basis but to prompt me before downloading or installing them. Because I have Update Manager set to check on a Daily basis, I expect that I will receive a prompt that an update is available no later than the day after the update is available (assuming of course I have my computer turned on). Yet I only receive a prompt days or even a week after the update was made available.
For example, let's say that my PPA of Google Chrome issues an update on Tuesday. Despite the fact that my ubuntu computer was on for a couple hours in the morning on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, no update prompt appears alerting me to available updates. If I manually open Update Manager on Friday afternoon, then the update is there and waiting for installation. But how come I don't get an automatic prompt that an update is available? Do I have my settings wrong or something?

I've been using 10.04 for some time, but now Update Manager won't open, nor will Ubuntu Software. With all the apparent problems, I don't plan to upgrade to 10.10, but I do like to keep my OS updated and current.

synaptic tells me: "you must manually run sudo dpkg configure -a to correct the problem"
update manager tells me the same thing but also that the software index is broken. And it offered a partial upgrade but it doesnt work or do anything just gets me the aformentioned error message.
I think this was all cause by me interrupting the last update process by pressing cancel, because it froze or something.

I'm on a fully updated and upgraded 9.10, and when I do update-manager -d, I don't get the button to do an upgrade to 10.04! What could cause this? I've tried the -d, -c, --check-dist-upgrades, --devel-release, -p, --proposed, and --dist-upgrade. I'm completely up to date on 9.10, but I want to upgrade to 10.04!

so my update manager keeps saying I have updated everything, but it won't show the new 11.04 release. I did everything the documentation says, including change the release upgrade file so its pointed to normal distro upgrades.

I've installed the GNOME Update Manager (0.68-debian.7) from the official Debian package archive. However, after checking for new packages and clicking "Install the updates", the update manager asks for rights and then just checks for new updates again. Selecting different packages didn't help either, it just checks for updates again and doesn't update anything. Has anyone experienced the same problem

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.
