Ubuntu :: KDE Apps Cause 10.10 To Crash?
Jan 5, 2011
After a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 (and all updates applied) any(?) KDE app causes Ubuntu to crash. (X restarts and the login screen is presented.)This happens immediately when opening kolourpaint, after clicking add file in krename, and after clicking "ok" to set up krusader for the first time.

I often connect to my main box via ssh and then run 'screen.' The client machine is running Slackware64 13.1, the box I connect to is running Slackware64-currentSome time ago I noticed the following phenomenon:1. Sometimes (relatively often) cli apps just freeze usually at the very beginning (when they start) and I have to either use Ctrl+C or kill a screen window. It happens both with screen an without it. I've noticed it with vim (never with emacs -nw, or nano), "slackpkg upgrade-all", sbopkg).2. Sometimes/some CLI programs display 'weird' characters. For example, sbopkg's border. It does not happen when I run the same app locally. Is it something to do with encoding? It happens both with and without 'screen'.Both 1 and 2 happen with sakura (my main terminal emulator), terminal, konsole and xterm.

I was wondering what is happening to my computer. It runs perfectly fine, until out of nowhere my CPU load goes up to 100% for no reason, and in the System Monitor, the process that I think is responsible is the "uninterruptible process". It's so far been chrome, firefox-bin, and now gnome-netstatus-applet.
Is this a hardware problem or buggy software? Because I honestly don't know what it is. I've even reinstalled the programs and rebooted several times, most of the reboots were because of my computer crashing every time!

I'm running Debian Lenny with GNOME on a ThinkPad T43. Some OpenGL apps like the game Trigger run great, while others like Stellarium crash my system beyond recovery. I get a black screen, I can see the mouse cursor and move it at a very slow speed, but nothing else. I can't switch to a different terminal or restart X with ctrl-alt-bksp.
I assume that the problematic apps do not like the laptop's integrated graphics chip? Is there a way to know ahead of time what apps might be troublesome, before actually running them? I hate hard resets.

I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.

Perhaps I might be a minority demographic here, but I am. Is there a way and how? Ubuntu Software Center doesn't seem to have this option. I come from a long history of being a Windows power user, and I am picking up pretty quickly with this stuff. I find QT ones leave little screen droppings and it bugs me to no end. Some might not, but I like it to be kind of GTK pure. If I wanted a QT app I would have picked Kubuntu with KDE. I admit that it is kind of cool that you can run an app from another desktop and vice versa. I am not trying to start a flame war, nor am I dissing any of the developers that may have made some awesome QT application I may not know about. Is there another software center like thing I can install that at least combines all the QT and GTK ones into separate groups rather than making me fend for myself?

I use some kde applications in gnome such as k3b, basket notes, kover kreator and amarok. These pull in a large amount of dependencies and need the occasional tweak to get them running smoothly. Although I prefer the gnome desktop would I be any better installing the kde desktop and then running the applications from the gnome menu? Would there be any advantage to this rather than installing them individually into gnome?

I've been searching all over ubuntu-land the last two hours for anything about configuring Unity and I'm coming up a little short. Can anybody point me to some documentation that I may have missed?
I figured out how to pin apps to the sidebar, but I'd like to configure the "Favorites" folders and just see what other options can be customized.
I would have thought right-clicking (anywhere) would have helped, but I get nowhere.

firefox plays sound in videos, system bell works at startup and shutdown, and i can play a test sound in "system settings --> multimedia --> phonon". but in several other apps, sound doesn't work, e.g. thunderbirds makes no sound when new mail arrives, although beeping is enabled, it only shows an alert; the same in my chess program. it all worked fine in kubuntu 10.04, now i have kubuntu 10.

finally got to try out the new KDE 4.6, but the problem is, if I want to run a GTK app, it looks like Windows 98. Is there a way to fix this? I thought that this was one of the new features of KDE?

I was forced (by an unrelated problem) to reinstall my Kubuntu 10.10 from scratch today, and now I'm having a very annoying problem with the look of GTK apps in KDE.
I know I have to install gtk2-engines-qtcurve to make them blend in, and I know I need to copy some gtkrc files to /root to make it work for apps needing root privileges (e.g. Synaptic).
This has done the job for 80%, but they still don't look the way I they used to in my previous installation (which was Kubuntu 10.10 as well). As you can see in the two attachments, in applications run as a normal user the menu bar is lighter than it should be, and in applications run as root the entire window is this light.

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my mom's computer. I've also installed a few programs like Emesene and PPStream for her to use. My mom can get in the way of it but when she runs PPStream, she always gets a popup prompting to enter the password. IT can get irritating at times. I know PPStream is safe so I don't want it to have to keep asking me for the password. I installed it from a Deb. Can I stop the program from askign for the password and jsut work?

I did a install of 9.10 on a Lenovo T61p a few weeks back. The install went seamlessly and everything was running along just fine, then suddenly, I'm having the problem that every time I go to launch a new window, it takes 30 - 40 seconds for the window to launch. Once the window is launched, performance seems normal, with one exception. When I go to launch Nautilus from the "Home Folder" menu under "Places", it takes 30 - 40 seconds to launch the window, then another 10 -15 seconds for the folder items to appear. If I click to descend into a folder, it takes 10 - 15 seconds for the folder contents to appear. This stuff was all instantaneous.

I've just finished my 100% total move from Windows after 2 years of developing on two different systems, one Slackware and one XP. I have come away from Slack because it was just taking too long to maintain the rapid advances in development tools and have now moved onto Ubuntu full time.
The last tool I was using on Windows was Dreamweaver, and not for editing (I had Bluefish for that) but for the HTML validation that worked offline. Thing is, I now can't find anything similar on Ubuntu. I've no idea how to get the W3C Validators working offline and the last two add-ons I tried with Firefox didn't work. Anybody know of any packages with reliable HTML and CSS validation that works offline? An offline link checker would also be useful.

I'm running 9.10 with a Radeon X300 video. Two displays, one is 1920x1200, the other is 1600x1200. I'm finding that some apps don't like to be too far to the right (anything past about 2600 x-resolution). If I move a window that far to the right, some of the controls are blank. A good example is OpenOffice. If I move an OO app too far to the right, the text in the main menu items will all be blank. All I see are the icons and the underscores for the keyboard shortcuts. There are other apps that do it, but OpenOffice is the most popular.
I tried re-configuring my displays, and it is always the one on the right. If I stack them top-to-bottom, I don't see the problem. If I reduce resolution, the problem diminishes, until I reduce the total x-resolution to below about 2600.

I've found lots of posts about reinstalling applications when they're already installed but I'd like to install Mediawiki v1.14, instead of the current v1.15, in order to replicate an older Windows implementation of Mediawiki. I've installed Ubuntu desktop 10.04 and Synaptic offers me only v1.15 of Mediawiki. So can I use Synatpic or the Ubuntu Software Center to obtain this slightly old version 1.14 of Mediawiki? If I use Synaptic to obtain v1.14, will it also provide the additional packages (Apache, PHP, MySql etc.,) in the same way that it would for v1.15?

Whenever I try to start an OpenGL app in the terminal, I get a message to the point of "could not create GL context." It was working until around the last update. I know it's not a hardware problem because my windows partition works as well as ever.
I'm using Hardy Heron with the closed Nvidia driver with a Geforce 9800gt
'glxinfo | grep OpenGL' gives
Code:
Error: glXCreateContext failed
