Ubuntu Installation :: Navigating Applications Using Navigation Keys In Unity?

Apr 29, 2011

Loading up gedit (as an example) I am unable to navigate reliably using keyboard navigation controls with the new Unity interface. There are times when left/right will work within a document but up/down will not. After a reboot left/top/right will work but down will not unless you physically click on the position you would like the cursor. I'm guessing unity unity is stealing these keys but not releasing them back to the applications?

Ubuntu :: Navigating Folders In Unity Dash

May 2, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04 with pretty much no issues. But, I do have one: When I opened "Files and Folders" in Dash and clicked on a .jpg image, a GNOME-looking dialogue popped up asking me which program I wanted to use to displayed the image. So, I went to make sure that opening an image on my desktop had the correct results. It did, and opens in Eye of Gnome. I messed up and made a typo, and now when I try to click on ANY folder or file in Dash, it says that it can't find the program "E" (which was my mistake/typo/whatever/I didn't finish typing and had a twitch or something xD). I cannot figure out how to set Dash to open [x file] with [x program].

Ubuntu :: Defining Keys Under Compiz With Unity?

Aug 4, 2011

I'll come out and say I actually quite like unity, but it still needs a whole load of development. So I'm just wondering if anyone else knows how or why you can't bind Compiz keyboard shortcuts wile running unity. I'm trying to bind a shortcut (any) to Initiate a Window Picker for Window Group. If Unity is moving toward the Mac way of treating groups of windows that belong to the same program as an application it needs to have more options to manage those windows, being able to at least expose those windows would be a start. However I cant seem to put a keyboard binding for this function. I've tried <super>+<shift>+W and on a hunch that it was unity's Super that was messing it up <control>+<alt>+ and <super>+ and <alt>+W and <alt>+<shift>+W.

Ubuntu :: Unity Alternatives - Can't Use Alt-Tab To Switch To Apps As VirtualBox Captures The Keys For Windows

May 3, 2011

When working in an XP VirtualBox I can't use Alt-Tab to switch to my Linux Apps as VirtualBox captures the keys for Windows. So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).

Is this kind of setup made in the kernel?

OpenSUSE :: Using Extra Keys For Launching Applications?

Aug 12, 2010

I own a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000 which I'm overall pleased with. The keyboard has some extra media and application launching keys which I try to assign in systemsettings>Input Actions. I believe the application is called khotkeys, however I'm not sure. Four different cases occurred as follows: The keys are recognized and can be assigned a command to run. When settings are saved the specified application launches. Examples of keys that works:

Code:
Physical key symbol : Recognized by khotkeys as : HEX code send by keyboard (obtained by showkeys)
Headphones : Tools : keycode 171 press, keycode 171 release
House : Home Page : keycode 172 press, keycode 172 release
All media keys (play/pause, next, prev, stop, vol-up, vol-down & mute)

Ubuntu :: Applications Display In Unity

Jun 16, 2011

My partner is visually impaired and I have been having a close look at Unity as it could be of assistance to her. Using the dash opens the shortcuts and the display is looking good but at times cluttered. Ideally I would like to be able to arrange things that when she opens up the various section that interest her that only the installed programmes are displayed. I intend to ensure that everything of interest to her is loaded so apps available for download are of no interest and I would wish to have them removed from view.

the most frequently used items will end up automatically displayed and will be easily available to her but in the initial stages having so many items displayed only confuses. What would be the best approach to tackle the problem bearing in mind that I no doubt at times will have to go into her system and correct the odd foul up caused by her disabilities of which vision is one. Ideally I would like to reduce the all applications list so that it only displays the items of interest.

For my own benefit can you advise how I may install the ttf-mscorefonts in order that I can transfer my various templates over from my system as we share certain items. I am only wishing a couple of fonts and found that one could be freely downloaded from Fontmatics. They say that I should be able to copy the .ttf into fonts:.

Ubuntu :: Unity & Netbook Display Size - Applications Are Oversized For The 1024 X 600

Apr 26, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04 about 10 days ago. I have this intermittently weird problem where some of the applications, some of the time, are oversized for the 1024 x 600 display. I can't get to the buttons on the bottom end of the screen, and the window refuses to decrease in size enough so that it all fits on. So far, I've had this problem with Evolution, Pytrainer, Gimp, and another one that escapes my memory.

Has anyone else had this issue? (Except for the Evolution bug, which has been around since 2005 or thereabouts. How on earth is that thing still the default when nobody bothers to fix it up?) how to a workaround? Heck, I don't even know where to go to report this kind of bug.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Applications Recognize Gnome Shortcuts For Multimedia Keys?

Jan 8, 2011

Recently I installed MPlayer with its default gui and its interfaces SMPlayer and GnomeMPlayer. When I'm using GnomeMPlayer it responds to multimedia keys as configured in Gnome shortcuts, even if it's minimized or running in another virtual desktop. But it doesn't happen to the other two gui's mentioned above. I have also noticed that native Gnome applications or with Gnome support like Banshee and Rhythmbox rspond to multimedia keys even when the gui is closed and they are running only in the system tray. But it never occurs in non-Gnome applications like VLC, MPlayer and others. Jetaudio wich responds to these keys in MS Windows running under Wine doesn't even recognize them.

So I came to the conclusion that only native Gnome applications or with Gnome support recognize multimedia keys because, as it seems, they receive the signal from Gnome configurations. Others applications doesn't do so. Here is my question: Is there some way to make all applications recognize the configuration of Gnome multimedia keys shortcuts? (Of course it would not be fine if they recognized ALL Gnome shortcuts because they could conflict with shortcuts from another applications. The idela would be that they recognize ONLY Gnome multimedia shortcuts.)

Ubuntu :: Navigating Folders With Unreadable Characters In Terminal?

Nov 12, 2010

I'm trying to get more acquainted with the terminal but have run into a problem. I have a flash drive that originally had a name that consisted of numbers and letters. After using the flash drive on Windows recently, I saw that its name had changed and now contains special characters (the name is now NPM=:N). It poses no problem when navigating through folders graphically, but because I usually have multiple external drives and the first character of the flash drive name is a special character, I have no idea how to 'cd' to the flash drive from the terminal. So the only solution I see is to either type these special characters in the terminal or somehow cycle through all the folders in /media with the keyboard.

Ubuntu :: System Crashing On Navigating Into Folder With Video Files?

Apr 2, 2011

Whenever I navigate into a folder containing video files, my entire system freezes/crashes. The keyboard, video, and the entire system become entirely unresponsive.

I can recreate the problem every single time by simply opening a nautilus window, then going into a directory containing 1 or more video files (avi, mkv, mp4, etc.). It doesn't seem to matter whether I stay in the folder, or quickly navigate away either. Seconds later, the system freezes entirely, to the point where my capslock key does not even toggle the capslock indicator.

I first noticed the problem when I installed 10.10 months ago on my Acer AspireOne D250. I had recently upgraded to ubuntu natty beta hoping the problem might have been fixed.

General :: Navigating To Folders Within The Terminal Program?

Jan 31, 2010

I'm trying to install Flash Player 10 (to access Hulu) with no success. Here are the instructions Adobe gave me:

1. Click the download link to begin installation. A dialog box will appear asking you where to save the file.

2. Save the .tar.gz file to your desktop and wait for the file to download completely.

3. Unpackage the file. A directory called install_flash_player_10_linux will be created.

4. In terminal, navigate to this directory and type ./flashplayer-installer to run the installer. Click Enter. The installer will instruct you to shut down your browser(s).

5. Once the installation is complete, the plug-in will be installed in your Mozilla browser. To verify, launch Mozilla and choose Help > About Plug-ins from the browser menu.

When I'm in the terminal program, I type this in but don't get a response. I'm not sure how to navigate to directories...

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.
