Ubuntu :: Log In Stuck And Unable To Enter / Sort It?
Jul 4, 2011After my kids were playing with my PC I am unable to log in.
After I place my password, the screen changes but it goes back to the starting log in splash window.
I tried some of the suggestions from other posts but nothing seems to help.
I am trying to avoid reinstalling the OS.

Jun 12, 2010I have a serious problem! I downloaded and burnt Ubuntu 10.04 and then chose it as start up volume in Snow Leopard's start up disk preference dialogue and although Ubuntu runs successfully from the cd (I'm typing from it now) I can no longer boot into OS X at all.
I have tried all of the different short cuts at boot up to no avail, even trying 2 keyboards. It insists on looking for the Ubuntu disk and if it is not in the drive comes up with an error message stating that a system disk cannot be found.
Is there any kind of tool on Ubuntu that will let me change the start up disc/interact with the Mac's efi settings? I previously had refit installed but this disappeared just before I booted the cd, is it worth using the live cd?
I tried booting from a Tiger dvd but it wouldn't let me do so, it just returned me to the ominous "System disk not found" message.
Does anyone have any kind of idea? Perhaps some kind of shell script that will reinstall refit? I'm guessing that any kind of dvd designed for PC will prob boot, any kind of OS X recovery disk compatible with MBR available?

Jul 30, 2009I have fedora 10 and vista in my system. however,all was working fine ,but suddenly today when i tried to boot into fedora , i found that the avahi demon was not starting , and when the systemn booted , a message was shown that thre wasn't enough memeory space , and a blacjk scereen was shown , then i booted into vista and tried t acess the linux partiotion by Explore 2f software... At first it showed not enough memory space , but on rescanning the partition,it is showing the /boot folder.So how do i delete some data in fedora ?

Oct 13, 2010I have Windows XP with a gigaset adapter which connects to wirelessly to a Belkin router. I'm with Virgin Media.
I installed Wubi Ubuntu to try it out, and it all worked perfectly accept no wireless networks, not even nextdoors were listed.
It's enabled but it says it's disconnected. I have no idea what to do.
Is it recognizing my adapter?

Dec 23, 2010I have a problem where I can't shuffle songs in Banshee Media Player. All the playback options to repeat and shuffle songs are grayed out. Makes me absolutely mad right now since I wanted to make a playlist with Christmas songs to play while decorating the Christmas tree. And I wanted the list to be played at random... no luck there.
Tried to upgrade via ppa to latest version but that didn't do the trick.
I have a fairly large music library, mostly in mp3-format. I run 10.04 LTS and Banshee 1.8.0.
Rhytmbox seems to be able to shuffle, but I am kinda used to Banshee and would like to continue using it.

Jun 4, 2011I've just installed Squeeze on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C660D - adapter is a Realtek 8188CE) and was following the instructions on debian.org to set up WiFi. I've changed the source list, done the firmware update and the modprobe, but when I get to step 5 where it says to verify that I have a wireless interface, the output from iwconfig just lists lo, eth0 and pan0, all with "no wireless extensions". Does anyone have any ideas what I should do now?

Jan 8, 2009Who has successfully upgraded going from F7 x86_64 to F9 x86_64 using the yum approach? I have had about 0% success getting everything to work correctly doing a fresh install of F9. Everything works correctly in F7( sound, firefox/flash, networking, samba, etc ), so I figure that starting with something know to work and upgrading to F9 might be a better approach that starting with F9 and having it guess.

Jun 15, 2009I installed netatalk for Linux in Fedora 10. I managed to get the service starting correctly at every boot and from Linux side everything looks good. I even manged to tweak avahi-daemon to advertise my server on the network so would show in Finder sidebar (with a snazy tux icon). But when I try to connect to the server it asks me for username and password (as it should), but my password doesn't work. I changed my password, I even gave it a simple one to rule out possibility of "fat-finger"-ing. No success.

Oct 7, 2010I have a strange problem (at least strange to me).
I am running a 64bit CentOS 5 Server with DirectAdmin control panel. I have used the default settings when installing both DA and CentOS. I have not installed any extra firewalls or anything else (yet).
Everything is running perfectly fine. DirectAdmin has been installed and configured fine, and it all is running smoothly. Apart from 1 thing.
When trying to access the server from my office computer (and another, off-site, server), I am unable to access SSH or DA. I am sure there is no problem with my ISP, and no internal firewall blocking these ports. I am running multiple DirectAdmin servers and can access others just fine (SSH too for that matter). However, I am able to access HTTP on the server. So it seems to be JUST SSH and DA.
I am convinced the problem is that my server (the one I'm trying to connect to) has blocked access to SSH and DirectAdmin for my office and server IP. Just to be clear, these services are working from EVERY OTHER location I have tried.
I have checked for the DirectAdmin blocked IP list, and it does not exist (which means its not blocked by DA). Even if it was on the list, that should not affect SSH.

Networking :: Unable To Connect Two Ubuntu Computers Via Crossover Cable / Sort It?
May 31, 2010I tried to connect two ubuntu computers via crossover network. But sometimes they can connect and see each other and even ping each other and sometimes not!
Each time, each of my PC's can ping it's own IP address but may not ping the other PC. I tried to disconnect cable, reconnect, disable network, enable it again, change IP address, disconnect via Network Manager Applet, reconnect and... . But when one of them don't want to connect I can't do this anyway!
Anyone knows what must be the problem? Sometimes it took about many seconds to get them connected, and sometimes they can't connect for many hours.
I must add that I have an ADSL modem on one of two Ubuntu PCs that connect via another cable.

I ran the boot_info script and the output is attached. From what I can tell it cannot even detect an OS being installed, but I've kept everything up to date and never had any issues. Everything was fine yesterday and now this. Also, I tried the Boot Repair CD and that did not work.

General :: Multi Partition USB Key - Unable To Format Partitions / Sort It?
Feb 1, 2011I am trying to create a multi-partition USB key to use to kick multiple OS's whenever I need (1 NTFS partition for Windows image and data storage, one ext3 for boot, another ext3 for Linux distros iso storage and the last one as a Fedora live usb with permanent storage).
I am using a Kingston Data Traveler G2 16GB usb key and I have absolutely no problem to create the partitions and all looks fine. The problem I encounter is that although I can format the 1st partition on the usd key to any fs I want, I am unable to do the same on the other partitions. I tried fdisk+mkfs.XXX (ext2, ext3, fat, vfat, ntfs) and gparted, and no luck.
mkfs.XXX gives me no errors when I run it but when I try to mount the partition in Fedora 14 the OS is unable detect the fs. Gparted allows me to format the fs, gives no errors, shows a format successful message, but when it re-scans the device the fs appears as unknown.
I know it is possible to do this as I had a DataTraveler 101 16GB and it was working fine until I lost it.

May 4, 2010We switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs,and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix.For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.
