I am unable to login as normal user. I am sure that my password is correct. What are the possible reasons behind this and also the solutions. My /etc/password and /etc/shadow files are good and my login haven't set to /etc/nologin.

However, I can log into the user's terminal window from the root account.
I've tried deleting and re-creating the user, but to no avail.
Is there some special file that I could delete before re-creating the user?
The one that holds the (corrupted) authentication data, perhaps?
i am looking for a detailed description of the login process for both root and normal user , also locally and remotely.i read some sentences that the files .bashrc and bash_profile are needed for this process. But that was very concise.

I can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Red Hat 4 server with Sungard Luminis installed on it. I was following some instructions on setting up Luminis to start at boot. One of the steps was modifying the sudoers file. Since modifying the sudores file, I am no longer able to "su" to root when logged in as a normal user. When doing so, I get su: incorrect password after putting in the password. I have another server with the exact same setup, broken one is test, the other is production, that works just fine. I made no changes to my production server. I've been looking at different things all day and the only difference I have found between the two are the results I get from running rpm -q --verify coreutils. Running that on my prodution server returns nothing. Results from my test server are below. Is this what is causing my problems? If so, what's the fix? I haven't found that yet. I've checked /etc/pam.d/su, both servers are the same.

Running slackware-current with KDE 4.5.5 and Kile 2.0.83b with texlive 2010. I'm unable to "compile" .tex files as a normal user. I get the error

Which doesn't make any sense, as I'm able to run pdflatex from bash and it compiles fine. My path contains the texlive binary directory. Incidentally, when I run Kile as root and try to run PDFLaTeX on the same file it compiles without an error.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter my last upgrade from 10.? to 10? my users' (kids) were unable to login. I tried to fix it and could not find anything wrong. Now I have upgraded to 11.? and the problem persists. The users could still login by selecting an older version at the prompt during boot up.
I deleted there account and reinstall the user and still they could not login. I added a completely new test user and could not log that one in either. The system excepts the password, waits a several seconds, then the mouse curser changes to the spinning circle. The hard drive lights flash for many seconds then eventually the hard drive stops flashing. I have let it sit a long time and it never continues. Tonight I came home tried to login and it is doing the same thing to me tonight. I ran fix packages, fix grub and everything else I could think of and could not log in.
Finally I logged in to the oldest version on there and it let me in.? The screens are all the same but the desk top is entirely different? I have never seen one like this. I think its like the new version of fire fox, with every thing moved around. Icons down the side. Menu's hidden at the top? I can probably get used to that but I need to able to login, and my user's to login?

I don't what happened but yesterday I was working normally and then I shutdown the computer, today when I opened ubuntu it took me to tyy1 login screen, I entered my username and password then it took me to the normal login screen with the login drums sound and it wrote on my account (logged in) so I clicked it and I entered my password again and then I got to my ubuntu so what went wrong and how to fix it also I noticed that a new terminal in system tools occurred called Kernel (I didn't add it)

After upgrading FEdora 13, user ravi was added. Then after few days neel was added. Both of the users were already existing. So when attempting login to neel, we found that every file is owned by ravi. So we did$chown -R neel:neel But after that problem started and when we rebooted the machin, there were no list of users on login screen. (then I connected to that comp remotely, it worked, but somehow I was not able to switch to root) It says incorrect password (though I new it very well). So I went to maintenance mode and changed the root password, and rebooted. This works perfectly, however the Nagios website uses alot of CGI scripts to display information I get the message below when trying to show CGI scripts with an AD user. Local users work fine. 403 Forbidden You don't have permission to access /nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi on this server. I tried adding the AD users to the cgi.conf file within Nagios (which works for local accounts) but it doesn't seem to work even with this change.

Having installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?
