Ubuntu :: Unable To Get Launcher To Autohide - Covers Maximised Windows?
Jun 28, 2011
I just got round to upgrading to 11.04 over the weekend, and generally I'm happy with the new desktop - except. In common with several others I appear to be unable to get the launcher to autohide, except this is not a sudden occurence - it has never autohidden, even immediately after install.
Steps tried include:
1. Log Out / In and reboot
2. Installing Compiz Config Settings Manager - I have tried all the options for autohide, with no change
3. Setting the autohide to none - with a widescreen laptop this wouldn't have been disastrous, but maximised windows still fit behind the launcher.
4. Dragging icons from the desktop to the launcher on various workspaces - still no effect.
I don't want to have to resort to Ubuntu Classic, but not being able to use maximised windows is a bit of a pain.

Recently upgraded to 11.04, and I am happy with the intent but unhappy with the bugs.
I have a specific problem at the moment, the unity launcher will not auto-hide, which means I cannot access the left side of any application (such as the back button for instance). Does anyone know of a fix?
A restart fixes the problem, but If I don't want to do that then I have to set the auto-hide option in Compiz to never, so that application windows stop at the launcher, and don't dissapear underneath. (setting back to other auto-hide options doesn't work)

If I want to work on two or more non-maximised windows, how do I simply access their menus without having to select a window into focus and then go to the top main menu? I'm fairly impressed with Unity, but that really struck me as a major usability blunder. I can accept that the window has to brought into focus, because that's what you'd do anyway, but then having to move the mouse to the top of the screen to get at the menu options seems really off.
Is there a way of doing this that's as elegant as was the case previously?

I want conky to run at startup. I put an entry in startup applications but when it starts it covers everything (see attached image). I can fix it (i.e. moving a window over it covers conky) by running killall conky && conky , but I don't want to have to do that all the time.
I suspect the problem has to do with the window type, but don't know how to fix it. Also, I don't want to lose sight of the icons/files on the desktop.
Here's my conky.rc:

This is so bizarre I'm not even sure what to search google for. When I log in, the GDM background stays on one of my screens. It appears, however, that Gnome and my applications are running properly on that screen - as I move the mouse around, the pointer changes just as I would expect. The GDM root window is simply covering everything. I've tried logging out/in and rebooting, but that hasn't helped. I assume that if I simply kill the GDM processes that my session will exit. This seems to have started since I last installed updates (that's why I rebooted the first time earlier today).

I have been unable to set the launcher on the left of the screen to auto-hide. With only 1024 px wide, the launcher takes in space, which I would like to reclaim when using apps full screen

I have recently upgraded to Natty. When I try to drag some applications to the Unity launcher, as I move the mouse over the launcher a space appears, but when I drop the icon, it is not added to the launcher. What do I need to look at? This seems to happen with KDE applications such as Akregator. Is it something to do with Desktop files. If so, where do I look?

after upgrading to Natty (and playing around some with Unity) I noticed that the top part of the application windows are often hidden/covered by the gnome panel (see attachments).
This is particularly annoying for the rdesktop session (second jpg) which I had set up so that it gave maximum desktop size to the rdp session while leaving the panel of top. If you look carefully you see that the "panel gap" is not at the bottom of the screen, while the panel itself covers the top of the rdp window.
It seems like, that the 'anchor point' for application windows used to be '+0+24' (so just below the panel) while now it's '+0+0' in the top left corner of the desktop. I suspect that while playing with unity I reset one of the compiz options which takes care of this. But I can't find it.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and having trouble setting a custom icon for an application launcher that I created. I have created and SVG file and placed it in /usr/shared/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/ and when I try to select it as the icon for the application launcher, it just goes back to the gnome-panel-launcher.svg default. If I put the SVG file on my desktop and then select it, all is well. I'm assuming this is some type of permission problem, but I cannot seem to figure it out. I have set the permissions to be identical to the other icons in /usr/shared/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/, but have no luck doing that either.

I recently upgraded to 11.04 and I've been tweaking Unity to get the desktop just the way I like it. I've come across two minor problems though:
1. When I tweak the icon size settings in the Unity tab of CCSM, the icons do not change size; they remain at the default "48" setting regardless of what I type in.
2. When I set the Unity launcher to auto-hide (also in the Unity tab of CCSM), it stays at the default "dodge windows" setting.
Are there any workarounds to change these settings when tweaking them in CCSM's interface does not work? (Or is there some trick I don't know to get CCSM to work properly?)

I dual boot F13 and Win7. I usually use F13 for my daily OS, but I have been taking some classes and have not been able to get the software to run on Fedora. I remember reading a post a long time ago that gave a command to boot out of Fedora and directly into Windows without having to select it from Grub. I would like to put a launcher on my desktop that will run this command, but I can not seem to find it.

For some reason the general launcher button (+ in circle) in the unity menu has disappeared. I do not know how to restore it. Which means I have great problems to start al apps that are not standard in the menu.

Our office housing keeping guy sat on my linux (Fedora 7) system and somehow removed the main panel. By panel I mean where all the menus are there - Applications, Places, System etc. and contains a tab for every running application. I brought back the panel but now I don't see the terminal launcher and I can't find it anywhere. It used to be there in "Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal" but now the System Tools option itself is not present there. System -> Preferences -> Look and Feel -> Main Menu. There one System option is unchecked but I can't check it and apply. I am logged in as root.

I am updating all of the company systems from Novell SuSE Desktop 10 SP2 to 11. We have several links on the desktops of users that are URL's. In version 10, I just did a Create Launcher, Type was Link and I could type in a URL. The LINK type no longer exist. I checked on my system at my desk which is OpenSuSE 11 and it also does not have the link type. I have been searching on the Internet for creating Launchers and then looking for information on creating links and have not been able to find anything. Can anyone point me to a good howto or document on creating URL link launchers (we have a system that runs Apache and from the users PC they click the link to connect to the server). I tried just creating a bookmark in Firefox and then dragging the bookmark to desktop and customizing icon. But, I build the systems at our corporate offices, and when I build, the IP address on the system is the actual IP and since it is not at the final location it can not connect, and the bookmark creation on desktop fails with error 'Unable to resolve hostname'

I am using 9.10 Ubuntu with the Compiz window manager. I am interested in changing the behavior of the panel (top and bottom) autohide operation. I have been in the CompizConfig Settings Manager / General Options and changed the Edge Trigger delay but that does not seem to impact how fast the panels unhide when I am at the edges. I would like to delay the response time before unhide occurs. Also, I would like to narrow the trigger region so that I have to be closer to the edge to trigger it. Does anyone know how to control these things? Can you direct me to any documentation? I am comfortable working underground (command line, editing, programming) but I often find myself stepping into an ocean when I try to solve simple problems,

I have recently dual booted an Old Toshiba laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) It was recommended to me by a friend after XP was becoming unstable. To the Problem : I have downloaded Chromium as the web browser as I am not a fan of Firefox, but every time I launch Chromium... It launches into a random work space and not the one I am working in.. So I cannot open multiple Chromium windows.. So to find where it has launched it, I have to click work space switcher and find it.. If I click Maximise, instead of maximizing it to the work space limits... it makes it go over 2 seperate work spaces..

I have a Fujitsu P1610 convertible running 9.10. I only like the two bars visible when I need them otherwise they just take up valuable screen space, especially on a 8.9" screen.
My problem is I cannot make the bars come up by moving the cursor via my finger. It works fine if I move the pointer via a mouse but that is not an option when in tablet mode. How can I make them come up when I move the cursor to their location via my finger?

I've just started to test kde4 that comes with slackware64-current. I've always used kde3 just because I can let the autohided panel to appear when the mouse hits the opposite side of the desktop (I think it is a sane behaviour to avoid to accidentaly unhide it while I operate on toolbars and buttons near the location of the panel), so I looked for the same feature inside the new uselessly eye catching d.e. and I couldn't figure out how to get this basic, but powerful, feature.

When I run Sims3 in Wine, the game happily switches video mode and runs fullscreen... but the global menu bar doesn't autohide, and there's no way to get it to hide manually. I've checked the Unity plugin in the compiz settings control panel, but there don't seem to be any settings at all for the global main menu there.
