I have recently upgraded to Natty. When I try to drag some applications to the Unity launcher, as I move the mouse over the launcher a space appears, but when I drop the icon, it is not added to the launcher. What do I need to look at? This seems to happen with KDE applications such as Akregator. Is it something to do with Desktop files. If so, where do I look?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just noticed this morning that the number shortcuts that normally appear when holding the super key to show the Unity launcher are not there. The s, a and f shortcuts remain however. Also, just pushing the numbers that should be there doesn't do anything.
I've just upgraded from Maverick to Natty and things were mostly working fine until this. I'm not sure what changes have happened between now and then and I don't remember any major changes in that period.
I just tried to take a screenshot and opened GIMP to save it and I checked again and they have reappeared. So, I guess the new question is why did this happen? How can I solve this problem if it happens in the future? Should I mark this as solved? I don't really understand what happened either way.

This means I can't launch any applications - is there an easy way to restore it?
Is there a way to make Unity launcher have the open applications/programs at the top?This way I don't have to scroll through the entire launcher to see what is open/running.Or, is there a way of seeing what is open - like <Super>+W but that shows minimised items too?

In the netbook edition, the merged launcher/taskbar shows always ALL programs running on all workspaces. I don't like it, because it becomes confusing to have too many symbols from every workspace, even when on the active one only a few applications run. So is there a way to hide application symbols for applications which don't run on the active workspace?

When I use Edit Menus to check the launcher properties I learn it is set as Type: Application, and Command: [URL]...How would I instead have it point directly at opening, with WINE, /home/dusf/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/Wow.exe?
The -opengl argument shouldn't matter as I have it preconfigured to run with opengl in the config. If relevant, when I navigate to c:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/, and open Wow.exe manually, it opens using WINE automatically.
how can i remove 'applications' and 'files and folders' launchers from unity in Ubuntu 11.04? Because applications and files and folders are already accessible from typing in the search box which gets opened clicking the top most left button.

1. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" via "Add / Remove Applications". it gave me an error about conflicting packages, and deferred me to Synaptic Package Manager.
2. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" in Synaptic Package Manager. error: "Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade -- the following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences. -- qemu-launcher: Depends: qemu-kvm (>=0.11.0~rc1) but it is not installable"
3. Tried to download "qemu-launcher" via "apt-get" in terminal - same error as in Synaptic
4. Attempted to download "qemu-kvm" via "apt-get" in terminal: "package qemu-kvm is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: package qemu-kvm has no installation candidate."

I just got round to upgrading to 11.04 over the weekend, and generally I'm happy with the new desktop - except. In common with several others I appear to be unable to get the launcher to autohide, except this is not a sudden occurence - it has never autohidden, even immediately after install.
Steps tried include:
1. Log Out / In and reboot
2. Installing Compiz Config Settings Manager - I have tried all the options for autohide, with no change
3. Setting the autohide to none - with a widescreen laptop this wouldn't have been disastrous, but maximised windows still fit behind the launcher.
4. Dragging icons from the desktop to the launcher on various workspaces - still no effect.
I don't want to have to resort to Ubuntu Classic, but not being able to use maximised windows is a bit of a pain.
I recently upgraded to 11.04 and I've been tweaking Unity to get the desktop just the way I like it. I've come across two minor problems though:
1. When I tweak the icon size settings in the Unity tab of CCSM, the icons do not change size; they remain at the default "48" setting regardless of what I type in.
2. When I set the Unity launcher to auto-hide (also in the Unity tab of CCSM), it stays at the default "dodge windows" setting.
Are there any workarounds to change these settings when tweaking them in CCSM's interface does not work? (Or is there some trick I don't know to get CCSM to work properly?)
For some reason the general launcher button (+ in circle) in the unity menu has disappeared. I do not know how to restore it. Which means I have great problems to start al apps that are not standard in the menu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOur office housing keeping guy sat on my linux (Fedora 7) system and somehow removed the main panel. By panel I mean where all the menus are there - Applications, Places, System etc. and contains a tab for every running application. I brought back the panel but now I don't see the terminal launcher and I can't find it anywhere.It used to be there in "Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal" but now the System Tools option itself is not present there. System -> Preferences -> Look and Feel -> Main Menu. There one System option is unchecked but I can't check it and apply. I am logged in as root.

In version 10, I just did a Create Launcher, Type was Link and I could type in a URL. The LINK type no longer exist. I checked on my system at my desk which is OpenSuSE 11 and it also does not have the link type. I have been searching on the Internet for creating Launchers and then looking for information on creating links and have not been able to find anything. Can anyone point me to a good howto or document on creating URL link launchers (we have a system that runs Apache and from the users PC they click the link to connect to the server). I tried just creating a bookmark in Firefox and then dragging the bookmark to desktop and customizing icon. But, I build the systems at our corporate offices, and when I build, the IP address on the system is the actual IP and since it is not at the final location it can not connect, and the bookmark creation on desktop fails with error 'Unable to resolve hostname'

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Natty (64 bit version) and I have been enthusing about it on the testimonials page. Everything worked perfectly until tonight! I've been using the Unity interface with the Nouveau/Gallium 3D experimental driver and it has worked perfectly - but tonight the computer informed me that I do not have the required 3D support and defaulted to the Gnome interface with no Compiz available. I don't know what has happened but I can't get anything else to load.
I've tried re-installing the driver but it makes no difference. I don't want to install the "blob" and I don't see why I should have to when it worked before.Iv'e tried installing an openGL game (Chromium BSU) and it runs perfectly so the 3D acceleration is working - unity should run!
I tried to upgrade to 11.04 from 10.10 but I get this error every time.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently switched over to Ubuntu 11.04. I installed Natty by wiping out Maverick entirely. Everything worked well, until I tried to install ATI graphics drivers through the instructions found here: [URL] The installation goes fine without any errors; however, when I reboot, nothing shows up on the screen. I can hear Ubuntu's startup sounds, but there are no visuals. When I attempt to go to the ATI Catalyst Control Center in Recovery Mode, I get this error:

None of these work at all, I cannot see anything on the screen when any ATI drivers are enabled. I've even tried re-updating Natty via CD, but none of this works. I have a Radeon HD 3450 graphics card, and my CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+. I'm on 64 bit Ubuntu. I had no problems with my drivers on Maverick.

i am using a 64-bit machine. i have juggled between the us server, main server, and a few other servers also....still it fails.
i tried deleting everything in /var/cache/apt/archives/ ....was of no use.
Currently I am trying to update my drivers in 11.04 on a dell inspiron mini.
I do not believe it is a pure dell problem, as my regular dell xps running 10.10 has been having to problems updating.
I go into additional drivers and start having it search but it gets stuck and states:
Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available.
Does this mean the servers are just really busy? Or do I have a problem somewhere on my end?
I upgraded from Maverick to the Natty beta a little while ago. It all worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then, this morning, I was unable to boot. I got to GRUB, picked the first option and it went to the Ubuntu 11.04 with the dots, then returned this:

I recently upgraded my clean install Ubuntu Studio 10.10 64bit to Natty 11.04 and whilst everything is working well (except for having no plymouth boot splash - but I'm looking into this) I have noticed that when I log in to the "Ubuntu" desktop (with the Unity launcher and Menu bar in the top panel) I can't seem to change how the time and date is displayed. It seems to be stuck showing 24 hour time only with no date no matter which setting I select in the 'Clock' tab of 'Time & Date Settings' menu.
The clock applet works perfectly when I log into the 'Ubuntu Classic' desktop and I am able to display the date and weather ok.
I have a laptop which I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 64bit to 11.04 as well and it doesn't have the same issue.
I thought it might have been a rouge Gconf setting so I dumped my entire gconf using

gconftool-2 --dump / > ~/Desktop/allgconf.entries
then restarted into recovery and removed my ~/.gconf folder entirely, rebooted again and logged back on. Apart from losing some settings like Evolution and Networking, which I reloaded, and my theme going back to the default theme, the problem still exists.
