Ubuntu :: Unable To Connect Windows
Mar 31, 2011Unable to connect windows with ubuntu on one single machine
View 1 RepliesUnable to connect windows with ubuntu on one single machine
View 1 RepliesI have a machine with Windows 7 Ultimate with several shared folders. Then I have VMWare with Ubuntu 10.10 as guest running. Samba runs in Ubuntu and in Windows, I can see the shared folders of the Ubuntu guest (read and write) as well. This morning I saw the shared folder of the Windows host and I could still open it manually in the Ubuntu guest. After this, I wanted to mount the folders permanently with fixed entries in the /etc/fstab. This failed and now I can't see the folders of the Windows host in the Ubuntu guest..
View 3 Replies View RelatedUntil today I have never encountered problems taking over my old Windows-machine. But now it doesn't work anymore... Could it be that something changed with an update of my Ubuntu (10.04) which caused this?
The Windows machine does not update or change, and I cannot imagine that I changed something myself at that machine...
I can still reach it using "smb://192.168.1.33/"
But when I try Remotedesktop Client with that IP it gives the message;
Error (grdesktop)
Autoselected keyboard map en-us
ERROR: 192.168.1.33: unable to connect
When I try using Terminal Server Client (I read in another thread that could solve the problem) I get the same response...
Where can I find out what the problem is?
I have a network of 5 Windows Machines and 1 Linux Server. I created a Filemaker Pro Database on a windows machine and share it with the other machines through web publishing (only locally). - On any Internet browser, they only have to go the IP of the computer hosting the database - http://192.168.1.99:120 to enter & use the database, and all the other windows machines connect perfectly.
However, when I type the same IP(+port No.) into Firefox on my Linux computer, it can't reach the windows computer with the database (It just times out). Is there a firewall preventing it from connecting to other computers on the network, or do I need to update firefox or run another Internet browser or install Samba? I don't have much experience with Linux, as a programmer set the server up for me, so a simple solution with as little programming as possible would be fantastic.
I have desktop with DVD-RW drive that runs primarily on Linux (namely Ubuntu 9.10). My wife has netbook that rins Windows XP with no cd/dvd drive. There's also LAN through our ADSL modem/router. I've "ported" (actually, I've just grabbed sources and ran dpkg-buildpackage) iscsitarget package from Ubuntu Lucid to Karmic (here are packages), installed it (sudo aptitude install iscsitarget; sudo m-a a-i iscsitarget) and configured it in the following way (/etc/ietd.conf):
Target iqn.2020-01.local.develop7-desktop:storage.disc.dvdrw

Trying to setup Samba for the first time and am unable to connect to the share from my Windows machine. It is a very basic setup, just trying to setup a single share to use a backup location for my windows files.
I've done the following:
1. Fresh install if fedora 15
2. installed samba
rpm -qa | grep samba
gives the following:
[Code].....
3. Used samba server configuration to setup the share and create the samba users
4. When I tried to connect from my windows machine I get the error that the server is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource or I get the error "windows cannot access server, check spelling and try again.
Both computers can ping each other. I opened samba ports in the linux firewall and tried to connect again: same error Disabled firewall all together and have the same error. Here is the output from the testparm command

I tried to install vsftpd on my server and while the installation went fine, I can't run
Code:
restart vsftpd
As I the get error
Code:
restart: Unable to connect to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory Though I'm able to restart the service with
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart with a warning telling me to use the service utility. Not only that, but despite the port being open it won't allow me to log in, it just hangs, and I have local users enabled (I've used the default .conf file). Does dbus not come installed in 10.04, and if I did install it would it make a difference for restarting the service? Are there further steps needed not available in the tutorial on the Ubuntu Server Guide for 10.04 to enabling local user authentication? -edit- Figured it out, dbus wasn't installed, vsftpd is working fine now.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup a dhcp server for my internal network. I have two NICs, a modem, and a wireless router. I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router. I will post my configuration files below with my current configuration.

I'm trying to setup PS3 media server on my new OpenSuse 11.2 and I'm being unable to connect to the PS3. The multimedia server seems to being working ok, only it has not appear on XMB.
I've been searching on PS3 Media Server forums and try a couple of solutions regarding /etc/hosts and adding full qualified domain name of server to it, but it doesn't seems to work.
I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.
Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network
However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.
Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."
I couldn't connect my Micromax 300G modem in Debian Linux. From internet (in Windows Vista), I came across the information of USB_ModeSwitch and then I downloaded it. While going to install it, I came across the problem that TCL-interpreter is not available in Debian Linux. Then again I restarted my laptop in Windows Vista and connected my Micromax modem and from internet downloaded TCL8.5.10-src.tar.gz. But while going to install it, I came across the problem that " configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH " . Also as presently, I am unable to connect my modem therefore I am unable to issue the code:" apt-get update ".

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

I'm trying to connect to the internet on ubuntu, but what ever i do fails. I've tried every thing i possibly can, and when all else failed, i had to come and ask. When i try to connect to the internet, it always says "unable to connect". I have no clue why. I'm choosing the default wired setting. To the side of it, it says never, so that might be the problem?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.

I have Karmic Koala and together with my neighbours we have a W-LAN which I was always using without problems. Now, a couple of weeks ago, my neighbour has changed the password to this W-LAN and since then ubuntu is unable to connect. The network is being recognized, but after the request to unlock a key for the network manager (besides, how can I unlock it once for all?) there comes the window with the request for the network-password, after typing it (correctly), nothing happens. The request for the password comes two more times and then ubuntu states that it is unable to connect.
- We have changed the password again - didn't help
- On Windows I and my neighbours get the connection
- My Ubuntu is able to connect to all other W-LANs
I am trying to configure and connect Cisco VPN on Ubuntu 10.04. I've imported .pcf file. The new vpn conn appears in the VPN Connections option. Now when I select it, it doesn't connect. Nothing happens. I am not able to connect to VPN at all. I tried using kvpnc as well but it didn't work either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu server dedicated to running an openVPN server on my VMware ESX 4 host. On my Windows clients I am able to connect to the VPN; however, on my Ubuntu 10.10 workstation I am unable to connect. Here is what I have done. I have network-manager-openvpn and dependices installed as well as the openvpn package. When I hit the add button in the network manager for VPNs, I fill out all the needed information, but am unable to hi the apply button. I have also tried using the openVPN method for connecting. I download the client.ovpn file from the VPN server, and issue the following command:
Code:
openvpn --config client.ovpn
It asks me for the authentication user and its password and produces this:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu onto my computer. It was going great until i could not connect to the internet. I looked up the troubleshooting, and it didn't help. They all said to click on the Network Manager, which I did, but then it said to clock on "Wireless Networks" and select the network, however I was unable to click on Wireless networks, and there is no other way to connect to the internet! It isn't detecting my Wifi, and I am unsure of where to go from here.

I'm trying to connect to my corporate VPN using a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. It's a company laptop but as I have chosen to run Linux rather than "a proper" OS, I'm mostly on-my-own as far as getting these things working. Normally that's OK because I am almost always successful - except this problem has had me stumped for several weeks now.
The problem is that I am unable to access the VPN from my home network. I am using the Gnome Network Manager interface to configure the PPTP connection but no matter what combination of options, domainusername formats, encryption options or authentication methods I select, I get the exact same behaviour, which is essentially a 10-second wait, and then a failure message. I checked /var/log/daemon.log:
Aug 15 22:27:46 pc770-ubu NetworkManager: <info> Starting VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp'...
Aug 15 22:27:46 pc770-ubu NetworkManager: <info> VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp' started

the laptop is connecting to the Internet via a WiFi access point (bridge mode), then an ADSL router. PPTP pass-through is enabled on the ADSL router and Access Point. if I connect the laptop to the ADSL with an ethernet cable (to eliminate the WiFi), there is no improvement. another laptop (running Mac OSX) is able to connect to the VPN, via WiFi or cable. another client, Windows7, is able to connect to the VPN via cable. an iPhone is able to connect to the VPN via WiFi. this laptop is able to connect to the VPN from inside the corporate firewall.
So I've got three other devices that are able to connect to the target PPTP VPN, and a laptop that can't, except when I move the laptop inside the target network, it can connect. I've tried methodically selecting various VPN options with no change in result. I've also read several Ubuntu Forum posts suggesting turning off EAP and that doesn't help either. I'm now at a loss how to fix this, and what will happen next is I'll be told by Management "we told you so", drop Linux and switch to a "proper" OS like Windows instead, which I really don't want to do.
I've run into a slight problem. As you can tell, I cannot connect to my HP printer through bluetooth. I've followed the Ubuntu documentation: [URL]... but I get stuck at actually connecting to the device. Here's the terminal output:
