Ubuntu :: Ubuntu Doesn't Recognize Partitions

Mar 20, 2011

I have my pc partitioned as follows using acronis disk director-

1-C- , primary, ntfs used for my windows xp
2-D- fat32 used for my windows data
3- unpartitioned (i had this partitioned as ext3 for installing ubuntu, but removed it to try and install on this unpartitioned space -unsuccessfully
4-E- fat32 to be used for my ubuntu data
5- i have this formatted to ext3 and have suse linux installed here
6- F- Fat32 used for my suse linux data
7- G- fat32 used for more of my windows xp data
8-H - fat32 used for more of my windows xp data
9- I - fat32 used for more of my windows xp data
10 - linux swap
11- unallocated

when i used the distro mode of ubuntu 10.10, the "places" sees the partitions - but sudo fdisk -l only shows the one drive without any partitions - which is the same during any type of install - it only sees one drive with one large partition which won't let me install on partition 3. gparted also only shows one drive, with one partition. I don't want to install there because i'm thinking it will wipe out my parition definitions and make my disk data dissapear.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Won't Recognize Partitions - Error Message Saying Partitions Over Sized

Mar 22, 2011

I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Ubuntu Installation :: CD Doesn't Detect Partitions But No Apparent Overlapping Partitions?

Mar 3, 2010

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago. After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run

Code:

sudo fdisk -lu
sudo sfdisk -d
sudo parted /dev/sda print

and have received the following output:

Code:

ubuntu@ubuntu:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -lu
omitting empty partition (5)
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes

Installation :: Ubuntu Dont Recognize Partitions?

May 17, 2010

I am trying to install Ubuntu LTS 10.04 on an IBM Lenovo T61 Thinkpad notebook with Windows 7 preinstalled on it. There were two hard drives one 30 GB and other almost 110 GB which (the second one) I resized in three partitions with the help of Windows 7 disk management. Now when I try to install Ubuntu, the partition manager doesn't recognize the newly created partitions it only shows 2 partitions C: and old 100+ GB D:. I had created a separate partition for Ubuntu also but I can't see it so can't install Ubuntu on it, I can't resize the visible partition because it is divided into three actually and I have data on each of three.

I have an Ubuntu 10.04 installation that I have been using for about a month. However, just recently, at random times for about 5 seconds I can't use my mouse or keyboard. When it does that, the computer isn't frozen, I just can't type.About 5 seconds later, all the text that I was trying to type suddenly appears. I have 4GB or RAM, and even when I barely have any programs running and at 0% of resource usage, the problem still persists. This has just been happening for the past day or so.

Ubuntu :: Gedit Doesn't Recognize Txt File?

Aug 19, 2010

I typed in a text file (Feb.txt) at work using the basic Microsoft Notepad text editor and emailed it home. When I tried to open it from the email using the default gedit I got an error message - Could not open the file /tmp/Feb.txt gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character encoding from the menu and try again. The character encoding is set to 'automatically detected'.

How come it can't detect the encoding? I had to manually set the encoding to Western(ISO 8599-15) to load it. I can't remember this happening in the past, and it was OK loading one I sent earlier (Jan.txt) which presumably had the same encoding, as it was written in the same way.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox Doesn't Recognize RCA Opal?

Jan 5, 2010

I have an RCA Opal, 4GB player. I am having some problems transferring music to it. I first try the player in MSC mode and just drag and drop the files I want to listen to into the Opal's Music directory. That works fine, but over half of the songs I transfer over end up in the "Unknown Album" file. I have checked the ID3 Tags for these songs and they are intact. Next I have put the player into MTP mode to try to transfer things with Rhythmbox, but Rhythmbox doesn't show the player in the sidepanel.

EDIT 1: It may be worth noting that mtp-detect in Terminal returns the message "No Raw Devices Found"

I am on Pidgin right now if anyone just wants to IM a response.

Ubuntu :: New VGA Cable Doesn't Recognize Monitor - Low Resolutions?

Jan 24, 2011

first time poster after having read gobs of threads trying to find the answer to my issue here. I'll try to post as much information as I can, and then will supply whatever else is inevitably left out and deemed necessary. I'm running 10.10 on a Gateway MX3701 laptop which has an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics controller (lspci | grep VGA) and am hooking it up to my Samsung P2770HD monitor/TV via VGA (VGA-0 port if that's important).

So, the issue: In resurrecting my old laptop by killing XP and putting on Ubuntu, I found I needed a VGA cable to connect to my monitor. Borrowed a friend's to get my setup going, and all was well in 1920x1080 with all the other monitor settings working well too (laptop monitor off, etc.. When my new VGA cable (cheap from Amazon) arrived and I shutdown, made new connection, and rebooted, my monitor was no longer recognized (it was before) and I am limited to weak sauce resolutions meant for my blinding grandmother.

So I've tried to find similar issues on here and have struggled to do so. I did find one thread that was similar, but the issue was never resolved.
