Ubuntu :: USB Device Indentified As "vided By Al - File Browser"
May 15, 2010
I have a usb hard drive enclosure that I have been using the same hard drive in since I bought it. (years) It has always be indentified as: "letters&numbers" I turned it on today and it identifies itself as "vided by Al-File Browser. Went to my windows side and the hard drive identifies itself properly, so I don't think that it is a hardware problem. Anyone run into something like this before? How did/do I solve the problem. All files are there and seem properly working, just the change in the identity of the usb attached hard drive.

My problem was that I have a Logitech Squeezebox Boom Network Media Player. I was not able to use my browser to view the device BUT when it was connected to its internet account I was able to see it although not use it. I figured out that post 9000 which it used to communicate between the server software and the network player was blocked.
I looked into using iptables and also firewall but then I found an article explaining why an oracle program would not work with SELinux. I then had a quick look round SELinux and added a rule to the 'Network Port' list. I added port 9000 with a type of http_port_t.

I've bought an X10 Home Automation USB interface: the CM15.
This is the information lsusb gives:
skerit@KIP-DU-SKER:~$ lsusb Bus 008 Device 002: ID 0bc7:0001 X10 Wireless Technology, Inc. ActiveHome (ACPI-compliant)
But this tells me nothing about where the device file is! How can I find that, or create one myself?

I'm using rhel6. Using File Browser Nautilus 2.28.4 I could easily locate any file I'm interested in by it name. I'd like to use this File Browser to locate the file name based on it content e.g. based on some word in the text file. It doesn't work for me that way ... My question: does Nautilus support the search of file based on it content or only based on the name of the file itself?

This is not a big deal in the grand scheme, but more an annoyance. I allowed Ubuntu (Karmic) to do some updates today. now, in the File Browser, there is no longer a tab bar. Before, there was the bar located beneath the address bar that was similar to Firefox, that had the + to open new tabs. Now it is gone and I do not see an option for a tab bar anywhere. I realize i can right-click on the tree on the left to open a new tab, but I REALLY liked the original feature. Anyone know how to get it back?

Is there an alternative to Nautilus file browser? I mean a file browser which offers out of-the-box (!) more features and where I don't have to install such add-ons like nautilus-actions separately and defined some commands which should obviously be built-in.

I want to retrieve a file--it's a compressed tar file, and I can get to it via a certain URL (with a query, so it's of the form <URL>?<search options>). If I go there via Firefox, I get a prompt to download the file. Lynx documentation says that if a file is binary, rather than displaying it it will give me the option of downloading it. (Which of course I will pick; I will use the option to save the commands I type, and then when I want to run it from a script give lynx the option telling it to retrieve and use those saved commands.)
The problem: this compressed tar file, which you'd think would be recognizable as a binary file, isn't; lynx displays a page of garbage and asks me whether I'd like another.
So, my question is: how does lynx decide what it thinks is a binary file? I have grabbed the sources, and will search them.

Now I have this issue on Ubuntu 10.04. Whenever i close the file browser(am running gnome), it reopens and throws a pop up saying "Cant find /media/A9AE-2182 Please check the spelling and try again."
Now, under /etc/fstab, there is no such device at all. Am wondering, how can i stop this? I click on Close all windows and then shortly it sort of auto-opens and opens 2 file browsers.
Maybe this is related to another issue i have, whenever i shutdown the machine, when i boot it up, on the splash screen it says unable to mount media, press M for manual repair or S to proceed. When i proceed, gnome starts off with no window manager, the windows are without borders and am forced to login as guest and run compiz --replace.

Interestingly enough if I open the computer that opens up simply in file browser. Does anyone know how to change back to the default as I prefer the look of it to Konqueror.

I am trying to use apparmor to restrict my file browser, which is Thunar to only let me view the files that are in the home directory and also removable media.I tried following the apparmor sticky with no success.I created the profile and tried editing it and it either started and let me do pretty much everything or did not start at all. Would it be possible for someone to help me step by step to set up a profile for thunar that would only show the home directory and removable media.

I used about all available OS 's. In all systems I used a quick acces system like the file browser applet in Ubuntu. In fact I "cannot live without", specially if I am working on jobs and I have to work with a lot of files in different directories. Opening lots of folders and endless clicking is really not an option to me. Does anyone know if there is such an applet or possibility in Unity (because gnome 2 applets will not work in Natty)?

I have just recovered my desktop Ubuntu system, thanks to SuperGrub, and Larryfroot, who pointed me to it. It had crashed due to an incomplete install to a pen drive, but prior to this I had made some changes to my partition layout, and now if such moves could cause the problems I'm having now.I wanted to be able to access my pictures, music, and projects while testing different Linux distros from CD or pen drive (DreamLinux looks much like the Mac interface, which I like, it's rated for speed, gotta try), but I've not been able to do that from any which I've tried yet. I learned somewhere that replacing the unused bulk of the OS partition with a big FAT32, and moving your files to that drive should make them accessible to most systems. I just viewed my files from the DreamLinux distro CD, so it seems to be working. I knew the action on this type of partition would be slower, and it really is when I move files to it, so is there a better way to get what I want than this?I have since had the following annoyances from Ubuntu's Nautilus file browser, and am wondering if the drive changes had anything to do with the following:
1. I am getting error messages when I try to move files to this drive through the Nautilus GUI file browser, but then these errors are wierdly negated when the file transfer is performed anyway. Well, I should be happy that it does what I ask, but where are these false error messages coming from?
2. It gets even more strange - when viewing files on Fat32 through Nautilus, in my Ubuntu hard drive partition, the file window has a banner which states "These files are on a Picture CD". Huh??? I know where I moved my files to, and they are not on CD! What is a "Picture CD" anyway?
Can anyone find a logical explanation for these weird messages, or does it look as much to you like corruption damage?
