I've found that changes configured in my hosts file are not being reflected in my web browsers, but it is in the shell. For example... If I put the following in my /etc/hosts file
Code: 123.456.789.000 server server.dom.com I get a successful response from running ping in the shell

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. I have to make regular changes to my hosts file to test services, so this is quite a pain.
I have seen this in fedora 8/9 systems :- when I configure the eth0 card and give it a ip address using the ifconfig command from the terminal window and then check out the card from the network config GUI subsequently, it doesnot reflect the ip address as configured through the ifconfig command. However, the ifconfig command continues to show the new ip address as usual. If I need to change the ip address of the eth0 interface which should be the prefered mechanism - the ifconfig command or the GUI. Ofcourse I understand that, for the ifconfig command mechanism a line would have to be added to the rc. Local file so that the change is effective on every subsequent bootup.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLast weekend i have increased the open file size (ulimit -n) for the application user id i have update the limits.conf file with necessary inputs restarted the service and the server as well, when i check the ulimit value for the specific user by switching user from other user it shows the new value (10240) but if i login directly using the application id the ulimit value shows as 1024 which one is the default one.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am working on a Fedora 13 iso that will be used on some of the PC's at my work, the computers will have a varying amount of Ethernet ports, at least two onboard and up to 6 external. In order to ensure that the same physical port on the back of the computer is always used for the internet connection I have written a script to rearrange the contents of /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. The script ensures that the two Ethernet ports on the motherboard are listed as eth0 and eth1, without it they could end up as any port in the eth0-7 range.
The script works well however when its run I need to reboot the PC for the ifconfig to load the correct port as eth0/eth1. I have tried placing calls to my function through the rc.sysinit/rc.5d/rc.local and so on however nothing seems to work.Is there a way to make ifconfig check the mac/eth configuration files for changes (There appears to no longer be an ifprobe command which sounds like what I need). Alternatively is there somewhere I can place the script after udev has created the persistent-net.rules but before anything else loads the information. I have tried chkconfig --level 2345 network off and loading the service later but it still uses the wrong information, only a reboot seems to get it to work

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am new to Linux and decided on trying out Ubuntu. Love it so far. Running Ubuntu 64-bit 10.04 on a Toshiva Satellite L300. Network browsing worked fine to both my other machines (one running XP, the other Win7). The next day I switched the laptop on, the other two systems don't show automatically in the File Browser under Network like they used to. It now only shows a Windows Network icon which, when I click on it, gives the following error: Unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share list from server. I can access the machines' shared folders perfectly through the terminal using smbclient.

I recently installed fedora and had to troubleshoot most problems with the drivers myself, before installing the system I searched for all the drivers in my computer so I could do it easily. After getting everything working in proper conditions, IE, wireless, and sound worked wonderfully, I was able to hear, and connect to aMSN and my wireless network. I didn't notice any problems until I actually started firefox to browse the web.
It couldn't connect to a host, or resolve it. It wouldn't work when it was wired, and wouldn't work wireless. I reinstalled it to see if it would work without me messing with anything and just connecting through ethernet, and still it didn't work, same problem. I wouldn't ask if I could find a site that had the same problem but I've been searching for about 2 hours. I'd like to use Fedora asap, and get rid of Ubuntu.
I was pondering over whether or not Linksys routers ship with a host file in it...if it doesn't, can you just manually add one via an FTP transmission?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Debian Squeeze from a live CD. When I open a web browser (be it iceweasel or epiphany) and try to go to google.com, it tells me it can't resolve the host name. [Edit: They do, however, allow me to go anywhere on debian.org, minus the search feature] I also get the same error when I try to go to my website running on a local server. However, when I type the server's IP address (192.168.0.10), it goes to the website fine. Basically, any program I run that needs to resolve a host name returns an error, with the exception of the host command:
I've tried changing my DNS server IP from 192.168.0.1 (my router, configured to provide DNS) to 192.168.1.254 (my internet modem, also configured to provide DNS). That didn't help any. Then I changed my DNS server IP to the same one used by the modem, and now everything works.
I've tried googling my way out of the issue, and I've found where someone had the same issue as I've got and fixed it by adding "blacklist ipv6" to their /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file, but that didn't work for me.
So, recap: Why does resolving domain names fail for certain applications (except the "host" program) when the DNS server IP is that of my router or modem (which works fine for all of my other computers), but suddenly works when I point the computer straight to my ISP's DNS servers, and how can I permanently fix the problem?
I've just configured my Linksys RVS-4000 router to syslog messages to remote syslogd server (i.e. my CentOS5 machine). Redirecting messages was easy, but now I'm having difficulties to redirect those same messages received from Linksys to a separate log file. By default, all these messages are logged to /var/log/messages, and after browsing manual pages for syslog, syslog.conf, and syslogd, came to suspect that what I want isn't possible.

Part of my test requires me to copy a file via RCP from one host to another host. I have two ubuntu boxes. I have allowed the subnet in the etchost.allow for ALL. I have installed rsh-server
When I try to copy the file it looks like it tried to use SCP instad of RCP because it connects to 22 instead of 544. Also note that traffic must be unecrypted thus me trying to use Is there anyway to make ubuntu go old school to allow me to use rcp instead?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on a cluster for a molecular dynamics class and I have to edit my FORTRAN code (only the newest and best for me!). In order to get through to the cluster I have to ssh in. The network on which the cluster resides is behind a firewall, so I have to ssh through the firewall into the network first.
this is fine, I can login and move files and folders as needed, including sftp-ing into host 1, then into the cluster so I can transfer files from cluster to host and then host to me. This gets rather tiresome, so it would be nice to edit the files in place.
The problem is that when I access my code with emacs it launches the emacs client on Host 1, with no mouse support. I know the purists will howl about how I should be using keyboard shortcuts, but I am a chemist and not a programmer, so the mouse is very nice for me. Is there any way I can perhaps mount the cluster using sshfs so that when I open my code it launches a local instance of emacs? Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I thought it was network related.
I just installed a dual boot XP/Debian 5.0.4 setup on my Dell 5100 laptop. I now have constant problems with "resolving host" when using Debian. The connection when using a browser or downloading is noticeably slower than when using Windows or my Ubuntu install on my desktop. Also, whenever using the Debian install on my laptop, both it and my desktop, which both connect through the same Linksys router, constantly show "resolving host" (Chrome browser) until it just timeouts. Rebooting the DSL modem sometimes fixes it for a while (although it's still slow even then), but it eventually happens again. Turn off the laptop/switch to the XP OS on it, and the problems disappear on both the laptop and desktop. Is this a known problem for Debian 5.0.4?

I have appropriate .ssh file(s) set up so I don't get prompt for password when I try to ssh.Currently I ssh into these hosts and then do a top to check the load before I start using the machine. Both hosts are running sshd currently. What would you do for the Ubuntu host to be able to ssh to the FreeBSD host? A tunnel?
The internal network is behind nat done by the PC Router.The TP Link is recieving wireless signal from outdoors and it has switching and basic routing capabilities. I'm using the PC router for better routing options.PC Router (or R for short) is a triple-booting machine - Linux, FreeBSD and Windows. It has two lan cards - external (ext_if) - 100Mbps Realtek 8139 and internal (int_if) - 1Gbps integrated Realtek 8169.The problem is that all traffic from R to the network is slow - about 5-20K, while the traffic in the oppoiste direction is all right - about 10MB that is fine for 100Mbps cables, NICs and switches. The problem persist no matter the OS the pc R is running.I've tried some debugging on the situation as follows:
- put another PC at the place of R - everything is fine. That exclude the possibility of damaged cables, RJ-45s, switches and etc.
- connected both of the NICs to the Internet while the internal network is being disconnected and they both work fine (no delays)
- traffic shaping is not running
- there is nothing in firewalls except NATing the internal network (and it is working fine). Actually these firewall rules have been operational for more than months and everything was fine untill a week or two ago.
- changed the internal NIC with another
- connected the internal network directly to the TP and all of the PCs are getting good network performance. Then connected the R machine to the TP as well and there was good performance between the internal network PCs and R.
- R has good performance to the TP. In fact everything has good performance directly to the TP (when not connecting trough R).
- the problem persist only between R and machines from the internal network.
I have a question, why is the Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.4 repository changes not being reflected on the .changes files?
For example, xorg-x11-driver-video.changes was last updated 2 weeks ago, when clearly the package has changed?
I am running Centos 5.5 in vmware and recently had to increase my disk space from 20GB to 40GB. I understand that in linux, the increased disk space is not automatically reflected but as I am new to this topic, I am not sure how I can go about doing this. how to see what's the available space and how I can partition(?) this.

Often, but not every time, I can select the STOP toolbar icon and reload the page. This time things work normally.
I have a similar but different malfunction running Evolution email connected to my hosted IMAP server. I select a message and see "... formatting ..." and then Evolution seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Rarely the stop-reload actions help reading email. Instead,all Evolution windows go dark grey and the entire desktop stalls.[Analysis -- It has the feel of a "network" issue provoking issues within Evolution itself rather than an Evolution-only malfunction.]
Watching the running system with 'htop' and similar, I do not see where some other application or service is sucking all of the available CPU time or such. [Analysis -- It has the feel that either the browser message or the email message were sent into limbo without reaching their intended destination. Stop-reload sends the bits to the right places and so I get results.]
I'm using rhel6. Using File Browser Nautilus 2.28.4 I could easily locate any file I'm interested in by it name. I'd like to use this File Browser to locate the file name based on it content e.g. based on some word in the text file. It doesn't work for me that way ... My question: does Nautilus support the search of file based on it content or only based on the name of the file itself?
