General :: File Size Is Doubled?
Mar 11, 2010I found one weird behavior.The file i copied from a server is almost doubled the size from the server.How come?
example:
720K ./xxxx vs 360K ./xxxx
(my pc) vs (server)

General :: USB Memory Stick Has Doubled In Size - Why Is So?
Nov 24, 2010I have an OCZ Mini-Kart USB stick which says 2GB on it, and it has been a 2GB stick for the last 3 years. However, I recently put it into a PC running XP (which had no viruses as far as I am aware) and all of the files in the single subdirectory became corrupted and unreadable. All files at the root of the USB stick were fine, and I could still boot from it (I had Puppy linux installed).
I looked to see if the corrupted files in the subdirectory were recoverable, but they were all inaccessible, (with freshly mangled file-names containing multiple copies of the characters '�' and '=' amongst others), and reporting file sizes of up to 1.9GB each. I examined the memory stick with fdisk and with Gparted, and saw that it was reporting two 2GB partitions, which was certainly not the case before, as I had recreated the partition table several times in the past.
I removed all partitions, created a new partition table and recreated a single partition, which is now 4GB in size. I have trashed it and recreated it three times, formatting it with ext3, ext2 and finally FAT32, all of which reported a partition size of 4GB. I currently have a 4GB FAT 32 partition, and have tested it by successfully copying a 3GB .iso file to it.
Although it's nice to have a 4GB memory stick, it does seem rather odd and I no longer trust it with my data.

Mar 16, 2010My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
Fedora Installation :: EIDE Hard Drive Recognized As Sda Hard Drive
May 1, 2010Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

Jan 24, 2011One day, when I switched on my notebook Lenovo X400 with Suse 11.3 I observed that the graphical login screen is divided vertically into two equal parts - each in different resolution. There are also two mouse pointers. They work simultaously (eventhought I can see only a half of each). The problem is that when I login there is no effect, it goes back to login screen. I can login into text terminal. But if I go to "init 3" I still can not startx and the next time I reboot the same problem comes again. Shall I somehow reconfigure X windows or method of logging in?

Apr 16, 2011I've had this problem for months now and I couldn't find a way to solve it. The issue is pretty simple: 'gnote' app auto-starts when the system is booted and I've yet to find a way to stop it.
I've checked the following folders:
/home/user/.config/autostart/
/home/user/.kde/Autostart/
/home/user/.local/share/autostart/
And I've also checked the following apps/modules:
'Boot-up Manager' (BUM)
Autostart - KDE Control Module
And Nothing. No sign of 'gnote' anywhere.
Now, I know I could just uninstall the app and forget about this (I don't even use it anymore) The thing is that I'm really amazed of how incredibly difficult it is to manage something as simple as the apps that start-up with the system (something that could be done in the deprecated Windows XP with 'msconfig' since it first came up, I don't know.. a decade ago?) I want to understand how this works because I like Ubuntu + KDE a lot and I have NO intentions of going back to Windows.

I looked on the net and found a solution which says I should change port 80 and port 443 in files httpd.conf and ssl.conf to port 88 and 553 and restart apache, change back the ports to 80 and 443 and restart again. This method worked before but now I am stuck with it not starting with ports 80 and 443 and if I change these ports then I can't reach my site and I have to add port number wtih : which is really not good.
1- What causes this problem and where can I look to debug it?
2- What can I do to permenently stop this problem? is there any place that I can dedicate these two ports to apache user?

Jan 17, 2011I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

Mar 23, 2010I am trying to move a whole bunch of files from one partition on one hard drive to the same partition on another hard drive. Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.
