Hardware :: Way To Check Overall Size Of Hard Disk

Is there any other way to check the overall size of the hard disk other than just fdisk -l? This is because the cloud server that my company has purchased is supposed to have 50GB of hard disk size,It shows that it has two SCSI drives, only both summing up to 50GBs. So what is the second SCSI drive, and why is it divided that way? dev/sda and dev/sdb???
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Instead I rebooted.The hard disk with the problem is:

how can I check if disk devices are running at the proper speed (read/write access)?What are, for example, the correct values for ATA o SCSI device, if I test them with hdparm?
I want to configure Name Server i.e., DNS to my red hat linux box in a production enviromnt.The ram is 2 GB and Hard Disk size is 200 GB. How much space should I give /var, /usr, /boot, /root and home partition. May be I am wrong in partition point of view while installing fresh red hat but to install for home purpose and server end is different. So kindly guide me the hard disk partition size to ready it for name server.
I want to add Fedora 14 to my triplecore 3GB RAM computer which has windows, Fedora 12 & ubuntu installed. What are the recommendation (e.g. size) for harddisk partition allocation? I can reuse the swap partition, can't I? Should I install Fedora 14 to a single partition (ie. /)? Should I use only ext4?
I recently installed Bio-Linux 5.0 as a dual boot system with XP for some bioinformatics applications, but Im having some problems with the amount of disk space which can be allocated specifically for the Ubuntu install.
Ive been using blastclust to analyse some very large data sets, which keeps on crashing due to filesystem running out of disk space.
When I installed Bio-Linux 5.0 from the live cd, the maximum size I could allocate to the install was 30 GiB, and I havent been able to find a way to change this.
Ive tried using System->Administration->Partition Editor using the live cd, and can view / delete the partitions, but I cant find a way to specifically alter the disk space allocation for Ubuntu.
How do I increase the filesystem size to larger than the current 30 GiB?
I have one hard disk (call her HDA) that contains nothing but a single ext4 partition containing a backup of all my important data. Last night I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my primary hard disk (call her HDB) and from there proceeded to upgrade directly to Ubuntu 11.04 upgrade. In 10.10, I was able to read HDA just fine. However after the upgrade, I can no longer mount this drive. When mounting from file browser:

my hard disk has a block count greater than the size of my device. I've done my background searching on this and tried a command line utility I've never heard of before:

this is as far as I've gotten. This drive holds over a decade's worth of work for me and is extremely valuable. I really didn't think that the Ubuntu upgrade process would mess with this drive, seeing as the Ubuntu install was contained on an entirely different drive. What is it that I need to do to restore my drive to working status?
I wonder if this is possible to extend or regrow the Linux hard disk partition from 8 GB to 20 GB without losing the existing data on the partition ?at the moment this Ubuntu Linux is deployed on top of VMware and I've just regrow the hard drive from 8 GB into 20 GB but can't see the effect immediately.can anyone suggest how to do this without losing the data ?
I have set up squid server. My cache directory has been set up as per following statements.cache_dir ufs /Cache1/squid 10000 16 256cache_dir ufs /Cache2/squid 10000 16 256Now the problem is that size of /Cache1 and /Cache2 has reached to about 8GB and in near future it will reach the maximum limit of 10GB. I just want to know that whether I need to delete the contents of these directories or otherwise.
after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died.The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops.One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible,can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.
I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?
a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?
I'm very new to linux and running debian 4.0. On boot got an error:
I did a ghost image of drive before I do any more damage and when performing the ghost, ghost stated I need to run fsck. I created the image and noticed that a lot of folders were missing (bin, boot and others).
1. How do I run check disk from an boot disk? 2. Is there something else I should consider?
script that will check if my log file is a certain size? EX: I want to limit the size of my rsync log to say 5MB, if that's true I would move it and create a new one.
I was going to back up some files to a DVD so I loaded a new blank in the drive and waited for it to come ready. I decided that now was a good time to fill up my drink and left the computer for a while. When I got back about 30 minutes later, I noticed that the drive was still cycling and had not become ready. I finally got the process killed and tried another blank, which worked. Then I went on about my business.
The next day, the machine hung up on boot with Dmesg saying that it was starting the syslog daemon, but that was as far as it would go till it dropped to the maintenance shell after a few minutes. Multiple boots always did the same thing.
After considerable troubleshooting, I noticed that the syslog file was at the maximum size - about 2.5 gig I think - and was full of DVD drive errors. Deleting the file fixed the problem.
Just to test, I built a phony syslog file to the maximum size and installed it in /var/log. Bang - same problem.
So... It appears that the system logger doesn't test for max size overflow either during runtime or during boot. Interestingly, I googled up one hit for the same problem from a couple of years ago, also on Debian, but nothing in the debian.org problem lists.
I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?
I have a file that's supposed to be growing in size 24/7. I want to check every 10 minutes via cron that it's actually growing. If not, send an email. Does anyone know how to write a script to do that?
is there a way to write/unpack .qcow2 hard disk image directly to real hard drive in Linux?(I know it's possible to unpack .qcow2 to .raw and then dd to drive, but I'd like to skip .raw since its large)
