Slackware :: Transferring Slackbuild Packages To Other Computer

Sep 11, 2010

I just finished building the monodevelop package(including the dependencies). I have other computer that have the same version of slackware(ver 13.0) and I would like to install the packages I build from one computer into other computer.

My question is can I just install all the packages without regards to the order of dependencies (remember, it is already a package) or should I install the package in order? I also ask this for me to know what to do when my new laptop arrive. I would like to install all the SlackBuild packages i have on this computer and I would like to minimize, if not, eliminate the need to build the packages I have already build.

Debian Installation :: All Packages Downloaded Gone - Use Package Downloaded?

Mar 1, 2010

after the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:

1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?

2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?

3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?

General :: Transferring An Iso To Different Computer Via Usb Device

May 5, 2010

I have two somewhat older computers, an HP laptop running Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and a custom desktop running Debian Lenny. They are not networked, and I do not have home internet access since I recently moved to an area where broadband is not available and I have a winmodem. I am trying to upgrade the system on the laptop, but have run into a strange problem. I have downloaded a copy of the Xubuntu Karmic Koala iso from a public wifi spot onto the laptop. The laptop does not have a CD burner, so I am attempting to transfer the image to the desktop computer via a usb device. The problem is that it will not transfer accurately. The md5sum of the iso is fine on the laptop hard drive and also after I have copied it to the usb device. I unmount the usb device from the laptop, connect it to the desktop, and copy the file to the desktop hard drive, from where I hope to burn the CD. I check the md5sum and it doesn't match. What is even stranger is that if I now check the md5sum of the iso file on the usb drive, that has also changed. The size of the file in bytes remains the same, but when I ignored the md5sum and tried to burn the CD anyway, it would not run, so something is wrong. I have tried this dozens of times with a compact flash card formatted fat16, a thumb drive formatted fat32, and another thumb drive that I reformatted ext2, all with the same result. The md5sums are always different, but always wrong. What I would like to know is, do I have defective hardware, or is something else going on? I have never had a problem transferring other, smaller files in this manner. How else can I get this iso file onto my desktop computer?

Ubuntu :: Transferring Saved Emails On Evolution To New Computer

Aug 25, 2010

I'm a new Linux user and i've only dabbled in terminal, but it's been serving me well. Unfortunately when i added my hotmail address to evolution it deleted all the emails from the actual hotmail website and saved them somewhere to my hard drive.

At the time i didn't care but know i've got a new laptop and i'm getting rid of the old one(with the emails on it).

So my question is, how can i transfer the emails to my new laptop or back to hotmail? The new laptop has windows 7 and i was planning on putting ubuntu on one of these days.

Ubuntu :: Transferring Hard Drive To A New Computer / GRUB Giving An Error Message?

Nov 16, 2010

Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:

Code:
blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229
Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?

P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.

Recently I installed airlines-themes, using the command

Code: sudo aptitude install airlines-theme It worked perfectly. My question is where are all these packages downloaded locally, so that if needed I can install them later without an Internet connection. Not just theme, I can do it for other application as well (for eg. ubuntu tweak and many others).

Ubuntu :: Download Packages For Update From Another Computer?

Jul 17, 2010

My internet connection is one where I have to pay according to the amount of data transferred and Ubuntu updates require large downloads. I was wondering if there was some way to export the list of packages required for an update in ubuntu and then go and download them from another PC. (The other PC in question will be running windows).I'd love to know of any apps that can do this ..If there aren't any can someone tell me if there is a way to do this? I am just getting used to Linux but I still have no experience at all with writing shell scripts (which I suppose would be needed for this sort of thing).

So in summary, this is what I want. Synaptic (or any other package manager in Linux) should generate a file with all the packages that should be downloaded. A program on the PC with a better internet connection then interprets this file and downloads the packages creating a local copy of the packages. These local copies are then transferred to the Linux box which required the updates and the updates are applied..

Fedora Installation :: Packages From Other Computer?

Jul 28, 2009

The same as Fedora, Mandriva Linux is rpm-based too, in most case they have similar package collection, but I've found some packages in Mandriva that are not included to "standard" Fedora Everything + RPMFusion + Linva repos. But there is no any kind of repo with Mandriva Packages for Fedora to be used with yum.

Yes, I know that I could try to install necessary rpms using rpm command, but this way I have manually download them and resolve dependences, it's very hard for many reasons. Also this way I could not easily group them and find similar packages by description. Is there any kind of repo with Mandriva (Suse and so on) packages for Fedora?

Ubuntu :: Transferring Current Installation To A New SSD?

Jan 18, 2010

I bought a 30 GB SSD and I need to install Ubuntu on it. I currently have a 1500 GB harddrive, on it my current 60gb ubuntu partition and the rest is Windows 7.Out of the 60 GB for ubuntu I have used 9 GB, so I want to transfer that 9GB to the SSD to preserve all my settings. Then I want to format the original 60GB to something else, probably NTFS since both linux and windows can read it.I tried sbackup but that creates a back up on my current drive, not what I intended. If there is a gui program that will work that would be great, if not I'll still give whatever suggested a shot.

Ubuntu :: Transferring Files From One OS To Another On The Same Machine?

Mar 20, 2010

I've resolved to move onto Ubuntu, but I haven't done so quite yet. One question that sprang to mind was the transferral of files from the Windows OS to the Linux OS on the same machine, if it's possible. I'm thinking something like the dual partition, though I suppose Copy/paste wouldn't work.

Another possible solution was using dual partition and then Windows SCP, but everything I've read on the topic indicates that SCP works by finding the (different) host address of the computer; thus it would read my machine as one, even if I'm running Ubuntu on it as well.

how to transfer these friggin' things.

Part of the reason for my query is that I am quite strapped financially and am unable to backup my files on an internet service or on discs.
