Debian Installation :: All Packages Downloaded Gone - Use Package Downloaded?
Mar 1, 2010after the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:
1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?
2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?
3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?

Mar 24, 2011I'm using ubuntu 10.04 and PostgreSQL 8.4.7. I need to find out where PostgreSQL is located so I can run commands. I successfully installed PostgreSQL without changing any of the defaults. Matthew & Stones' Beginning Databases with PosgreSQL From Novice to Professional, as well as the PostgreSQL documentation, indicates the standard location is /usr/local/pgsql/bin/ but it's not there; it's somewhere else (ps -el | grep post confirms it IS running and psql is able to do du to display the list of users and l to display the list of databases).
But when I tried to create a new user by running /usr/local/pgsql/bin/createuser the command was not found. I tried to locate the installation by running pg_config --bindir but it said pg_config was not installed. I downloaded pg_config and its dependencies and tried to install them with the package installer, but it wouldn't go because something is wrong with the libkrb5-3 and libkrb5support0 packages - they won't install and the package installer just zips through without reporting missing dependencies or anything. The MD5, SHA1, and SHA256 checksums all match, but they just won't install. I then tried the libk5crypto3 package just to make sure something wasn't wrong on my end - it installed fine. So I searched the PostgreSQL FAQ and found out how to get the version without pg_config by doing a SELECT version(); query. here appears to be no corresponding SELECT bindir(); query. A plain ordinary file search for pgsql, postgresql, etc.

Jan 8, 2011This simple task is proving harder then imagined. I have a multi-level directory that I'm trying to clean of duplicates, but I can't get 'find' to print what I need to see. To give an illustrative example, here is a dir:

So the output of find as i'd like it to work would show the two locations of dir1, which would be ./dir1 and ./level2/dir1. But no:

Feb 20, 2010if i configured the /etc/yum.conf file to:
keepcache=1
this seems to keep downloaded packages. in the dir specified at:
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
the next time i wish to use these packages and install them, how would i use yum to do this or do i just use rpm instead ? Would it be necessary to connect to the internet to do this? What about those package dependencies will i have to install them all one at a time?

Fedora :: Finding A List Of Renamed Packages?
Sep 1, 2011I get annoyed sometimes that from one Fedora release to another, some programs get renamed or put into different packages. Examples:
* Gnome's volume control applet. Used to be provided by gnome-media, now it's moved to control-center. Worse, the command itself was renamed from gnome-volume-control-applet to gnome-sound-applet, so I couldn't even try a `yum provides` search to locate it.
* Gnome's Disk Usage Analyzer tool. Used to be in a package by itself, baobab. Now it's provided by gnome-utils.
Is there a wiki or something where the full list of all renamed/repackaged programs can be found? I'm not a Gnome desktop user, so, while I'm sure all the packages I like from Gnome are just there out-of-the-box for most users, it doesn't help me very much. The volume control applet for example is extremely useful for other desktop environments (and Gnome itself really doesn't have much need for it anyway, since they have their own built into the window shell).

Mar 17, 2010A while ago I posted this thread, with no responses:[URL].. I deploy into an environment that for "security" reasons cannot be kept up to date with wherever the ubuntu archive is up to (with awareness that this is avoiding security updates...). It is a sealed system not connected to the internet. I'm working with the 8.04.1 LTS, and my customer is in an 'if it ain't broke don't change it' frame of mind w.r.t. moving to 8.04.4. My main problem comes in two variations: 1. Some packages my runtime system depends on are not distributed on the 8.04.1 DVD, but were available in the full ubuntu archive at the time of the point release (and still are, in an up-to-date form). My concern is that if I take the 8.04.4-ish version of a package it will not work correctly with an otherwise 8.04.1 system. In general I am expecting that it *might*, and the versioned dependencies it has on other packages will be loose enough. 2. Some packages my build system (which produces what I put onto the runtime system) depend on are also not on the DVD. So almost a repeat of 1 above, except that I am generally running afoul of strictly-versioned dependencies (the -dev version of a lib package depends on the matching lib package having exactly the same version). If the non-dev lib package is on the DVD, but is not the same version as the -dev package I have from an archive mirror taken just before the 8.04.1 release, I believe I'm screwed?
So my two questions are: a. Is there such a thing as a copy of the full ubuntu archive taken at the exact time the 8.04.1 LTS was released? I think that would solve most of my problems.
