I want to install all the ubuntu distro packages on a computer without an internet connection. I read the website, but it didn't say if the DVD you buy has all the packages. Or are there ISO's of them?

I broke my Ubuntu(9.10) and now can not log in, so I want to reinstall gnome, unfortunately I could not connect to internet, so I wonder if there is a way to use the live-CD as a source for the new software.
I would be really happy if I don't have to preinstall the whole system.
I have a laptop with internet and ubuntu, and a desktop without internet, and I need to install some pakages on it. I did my research and generated a script to download them from synaptic, but when I double click it, it opens it gedit, when it is supposed to download the packages. What am I doing wrong? View 3 Replies View RelatedDuring the installation of Debian ( debian-8.2.0-amd64-CD-1.iso ) I couldn't connect to any mirror probably because the internet wasn't configured.
Thus, after the basic installation I wasn't able to install any packages ( trying to install sudo as root prompted me to insert the media disc - the USB drive I used wasn't detected going in an infinite loop ). Judging by the fact that I don't have a window manager installed.
im using fedora 14 and i have a slow internet connection. i want 2 install some packages from the fedora 14 dvd instead of downloading from internet using add/remove packages. i tried to edit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo but it dint work.

The other day I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my mom's old system (not too old, has vista on it) and even from the live cd it wouldn't boot. Then I tried 8.04 because I know that works on my XP system. However it would freeze during boot but at least showed that it was booting (the bar was starting to fill).

Since we bought it it's been upgraded to 2 GB of ram and has a nVidia 8400gs video card and a belkin wireless adapter now. I can't understand why the live cds won't fully boot since my single core 2.2Ghz boots just fine with 8.04.
I was thinking of trying 6.06 to see of that might work. However I was unsure if the system is capable of running Ubuntu and might need Kubuntu or another distro.
The same as Fedora, Mandriva Linux is rpm-based too, in most case they have similar package collection, but I've found some packages in Mandriva that are not included to "standard" Fedora Everything + RPMFusion + Linva repos. But there is no any kind of repo with Mandriva Packages for Fedora to be used with yum.
Yes, I know that I could try to install necessary rpms using rpm command, but this way I have manually download them and resolve dependences, it's very hard for many reasons. Also this way I could not easily group them and find similar packages by description. Is there any kind of repo with Mandriva (Suse and so on) packages for Fedora?
I recently had to rebuild my computer with a new HDD and decided to load the new Ubuntu 10.04 which seems to work great. I was in the middle of downloading packages from the Ubuntu Software Center when the computer decided to reboot in the middle of downloading 6 packages. I went to the Synaptic Package Manager and it said to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a Here is what I got when I did that. What do I do next to fix and continue downloading the corrupted packages?

Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.

Can you install software by downloading it from another PC via CD and install it in your Linux PC from the CD? Reason I ask is that I do not have a WLAN setup on my Linux PC yet and would like to install some programs or drivers while I am waiting to get a WLAN adapter that is compatible with Linux. Can you convert drivers or programs to an ISO image that can be installed on Linux? View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a server which is in an isolated LAN onto which I would like to install some packages from the Ubuntu Repositories.I realise I can go to packages.ubuntu.com and download them one at a time following the dependencies through but this is a bit of a nightmare.Is there anyway I can use the -d option of apt-get to download the files on another machine so I can transfer the lot over in one go?It is probably important to note that the server is running 8.04.4 and the other machine I have run 9.10 and may or may not have said packages installed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use the CD upgrade method to upgrade my kubuntu 10.04 to 10.10.Not to mention,the ISO image of the CD is this one :kubuntu-10.10-alternate-i386.iso.At the first run I choose YES for the prompt asking for internet connection or whatever, but I immediately realise that I have chosen a wrong option, so I exit and restart the upgrade all over again.On the second run, I choose NO for the prompt , then the installation continues until it reaches the 'fetching files' stage. It pops up and says "The upgrade has aborted. Please check your internet connection or installation media and try again. All files downloaded so far are kept."
I don't want to reinstall the whole system again because I want my applications;I don't want to use the updater to upgrade because I have a low internet speed .
I accidentally removed my network manager (gnome) from my system (via synaptic) and hence have not been able to have access to the internet to reinstall the packages. I have experimented with many commands (with help from others) in terminal with little success.
What I now did was downloaded a 'NetworkManager-0.8.0.999.tar.gz' file and a 'NetworkManager-0.8.1.tar.bz2' file (from a different comp) and have placed them onto my desktop. I have read the INSTALL instructions within and it is a tad complex for me as I am new to Linux. I understand I have to extract the files and compile them into a new folder (I think I would choose a file in the /home directory)- how would I go about doing this? Following this, I need to './configure' or 'make' or 'make install' the files

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy SL6.1 Distribution isn't connecting the the source packages from yum. It says something along the lines of the repo???.xml cannot be found for altrpms & sourceforge packages.
I have already tried using the command:
su yum clean all su yum update package-list
but that failed to work.
and su yum makecache
Is there any other way i can try? Like uninstalling the source from yum then reinstalling it?
I'm using 3 monitors over a pci-e 9800GT and an agp 7600GS and have no problems under Windows 7, except i can't have Ubuntu (which i really miss). I tried installing Ubuntu and pretty much every other distribution multiple times.. with no luck so far. Wubi, CD, USB.. none of them worked for me. Right before the first step in the installation, all the screens go haywire, displaying all kinds of shapes and colors and everything seems frozen.
None of this ever happened back when i only had 2 screens and i really need the 3rd one (actually thinking of a 4th since i got a slot left.. maybe for movies or stuff while i'm working). I found topics of people with similar problems, only they were reffering to whatever happens while inside ubuntu or whatever.
I've got a frustrating problem. I have a Dell SC440 machine that's worked perfectly for me for a couple years. Up until a few months ago I dual-booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04 with Grub, with absolutely no problems. I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 and the new kernel, and the new kernel refused to boot - if I selected it in Grub it would lock up. I could, however, still boot into the old linux kernel.
I killed and recreated the partition, and I've tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch. It gets past the initial boot screen, but locks up immediately after. The exact same thing happens for Fedora 12, OpenSolaris 2009.06, and Vector Linux. I can't install in text-safe mode (or its various other names) either. LiveCD doesn't work.
The funny thing is that Ubuntu 9.04 still installs and loads just fine, and also runs the live CD. GParted boot-CD works fine. These two seem to be the only bootable CDs that work for me.
Suggest the best distro for a fresher ?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am walking thin ice here: I have this ancient PC, that has so old BIOS who doesn't know how to boot from CD (but it has a CD drive). It has also floppy drive, but I don't have any floppies what to feed there, so for time being let's assume the floppy drive doesn't exist. It's got network PCMCIA card.
I have managed to install on it linux (there was Win98 before), it was quite a journey - I first installed boot manager (Smart Boot Manager) that would let to boot from CD (what a wonderful thing it is). That, in turn, let me install Damn Small Linux on the box.
But the story gets a bit sad here. Since I had to delete and reformat partitions, the MBR where there was Smart Boot Manager, was replaced by GRUB. As far as I know, GRUB, once it's loaded, does not give option to boot from CD. And I experience some strange problems when trying to install the Smart Boot Manager again (this time from linux) - even superuser gets "Permission denied" error message.
So basically now I have no way to install other Linux distro (Damn Small Linux is smart but with ugly looks. I want to try Xcfe-d DSL, wich comes under name Luitlinux.
So, my question is - is there any way how to boot from CD drive, or ISO image, without rebooting PC? If not, then the only alternative is to find a floppy and burn the Smart Boot Manager on it, boot from that floppy, and then boot from whatever CD.
I'm trying to do a net install with the latest release of debian - but my ethernet card is not recognized/the drivers are not available because I have a card that requires a linux kernel version of 2.6.35. This is obviously a problem because I can't download any additional packages, and I can't update the version because I'm not able to connect to the internet. I have installed it, but it's only text (which I assume is because I could not install the graphical interface, correct me if I'm blaringly wrong here). So what can I do to install debian on my laptop and be able to use my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 620 network card?

or sth like this and a few more errors. Can't look the exact message as I am writing from the liveCD. On Gparted the boot looks normal and it is said that it's mounted but there is no mount point. There are things on the hard drive that I must save.
I got an old laptop from my brother, it has ubuntu 6 on it right now. The computer is real old, complete with a windows 95 and pentium II sticker on it. I'd like to put a new install on this but first I would like to find out how to check the hardware specs like processor and ram so i can choose what to install. How can i do that?

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on this computer, but it runs slow. It's not unusable but slow. I was wondering in Fedora would run faster? I know it has lower system requirements but would it run faster on this older hardware?

View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically I have been completely unable to install any distro bar those 2 (OpenSuSE 11.2 and Mandriva can't remember what version).
I tried Ubuntu lucid lynx and Maverick Meerkat, Mint 8 (helena) and 9 (isadora), fedora 12 and 13 and even....windows (I know that's not linux but meh).
When attempting to install Ubuntu and Mint I get the fabled errno 5 error. I have tried using 4 different optical drives, I burnt it at slowest possible speed I even used a usb to boot it and still somehow copped the errno 5 error (which is somewhat humorous when it tells me to make sure my cd/dvd drive is ok and i'm using a usb stick) I tried it on 2 different HDD's (both in this computer) 1 a 40gb the other a 1TB. I tried using sony DVD's, Verbatim DVD's and TDK DVD's I even tried using Verbatim Cd's.
When I attempt to install Fedora I get a (sorry as I can not remember the exact error message) cannot copy image from live cd error (or something along those lines) at around 54%.
With windows (again I know it's not linux but it might give some insight into what is actually going on) I get a blue screen of death before first boot EVERY SINGLE TIME and then it just continues to happen, this was on xp and 7.
My only idea I have as to what is happening is that my computer hates me and just likes driving me up the wall for kicks.
Lastly and ever so slightly off topic, if I manage to get another distro to install how do I stop it from killing my bootloader and how do I make that OS appear in my current bootloader.
