Nov 15, 2009I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.
The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

Nov 1, 2010Is there any way to do remote desktop from Mac (Snow Leopard) to Centos 5.5?I have turned on remote desktop in Centos and got the address ([url].....) to access remotely. Then I installed vnc-Viewer in my Mac. Put the address like (mypcname.com:0) then clicked connect. I get error message "Failed to connect: Operation timed out (60)".My Mac and Cenotos is in the same network.

May 6, 2010I get this error ALL THE TIME after a reboot if I try to print. Going to the printing applet to add the printer does no good because Lucid is not connected to the CUPS server. I found that the work-around below fixes the issue for the current session.

Nov 12, 2010Although Win7 is not bad either, I'm really happy using new Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat on my notebook. Since I've been using Linux (SimplyMepis, then Arch) on my desktop, I'm really happy that I found a Linux distro which suits me the best. BTW, I have a Toshiba T130-10g which I love for its long battery life. However, I would like to solve some issues/dilemmas/questions (and I searched for s the solutions of some of them on Google so please don't tell me to use it...)
1) How do I turn off Wifi completely in a comfortable way? I tried sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower off but it threw: Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. I even edited something in interfaces configuration file, but it did nothing. Oh, I forgot, my notebook doesn't have a hardware switch to turn off wifi.
2) Setting brightness doesnt work for my laptop. I can set it by udo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=25 but I'm looking for a more comfortable solution. BTW, editing one GRUB configuration file didn't help and ended in booting into command line (it was something with adding backlight=vendor or something like that...)
3) My touchpad is sometimes too sensitive and clicks somewhere sometimes when I don't want to it. How to make clicks less sensitive? I tried to play with some mouse settings but it didn't help much but perhaps I'm setting a bad parameter.
4) I remember that back in KDE 3.5 times a network manager icon had a setting to switch on net statistics so I could very easily see how much I downloaded every day. But, since KDE 3.5 is not supported anymore, I stopped using it in refusal to update to KDE 4.XX and switched to GNOME. Since for some months I'll have a limited download connection, is there something esay in GNOME to watch my net statistics that wouldn't be deleted after reboot/shutdown?...

Aug 6, 2010I am having an issue with HTTPS certification using curl. My curl is configured with OpenSSL. If the certification verification is failed I dont want to terminate the operation, instead I want to continue by just putting a log message. For this I have used OpenSSL SSL_CTX_set_verify() function to set my static C callback function. During HTTPS transaction, my callback is also getting called with first parameter 0 or 1 (depending upon of the certificate verification is success or failure). But even if my certification verification is failure, I want to continue. So I have hard coded to return value as 1 always from my callback function. But still I see the certification error and I don't get the page.

Jun 19, 2010i am trying to install opensuse 11.2 to my vaio laptop i have win7 pro 64 bit already installed so i'm trying dual booting i have followed the below steps1- on windows, shrink the c partition and create a new unused volume for suse2- install the suse 11.2 on the new unused volume with hdd config like sda4 swap 4 gb sda5 20 gb / ext4 sda6 120 gb ext43- selected custom packages and started the installaton4- installation started smoothly and after installing packages it tried to reboot the machine at the end. But after this point the reboot operation has failed and gave a blank screen.
At the end the installation failed.I started the machine vaio boot logo comes and stops. i can't even enterbios setup or change boot options.I have unplaged the hd reset the partions, pluged it again and recovered win7So i think the installation damaged the file system.i have tried the above steps 2 times and came up with the same result.I have installed fedora 13 before with no problem.

Jun 23, 2009I am a newbie trying to install XMLSec on my server. I have CentOS 5 with OpenSSL 0.9.8b. I downloaded xmlsec1-1.0.3-1.i386.rpm from [URL]. While doing rpm -Uvh xmlsec1-1.0.3-1.i386.rpm I get the following error message.

I loaded my entry and it failed to mount the root filesystem.I took the initrd0 file from the LiveUSB syslinux folder and added that ramdisk to the entry. Now it finds the root filesystem (/dev/sda9 as Ext3).But it fails shortly after loading /sbin/init. It talks about an init error where it says "File not found!!!".The previous lines involved umounting old filesystems, like /dev.

I receive the same result with the original e1000e driver from the distribution, the latest elrepo driver and the latest driver from Intel site (as seen in the example). I have tried also 2.6.37 kernel version - with the same result. The adapter however works fine under Windows (MiniXP from Hiren's BootCD) and with Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD.
