Well this problem has been here since Lucid. When I start up my computer and select Ubuntu, I get a blinking underscore for about most of the start up time for Ubuntu. Then It quickly shows the nice Ubuntu Loading Screen (Plymouth) for about two seconds, then it gets to the login screen. I am using the Open Source ATI drivers, I believe the open drivers are called "radeon".
View 5 RepliesI have centos 5.3 i got the login screen but after logging shows error as-- your session only last less than 10 seconds . if you have not logged out yourself tyhis could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may out of disk space .try logging with one of fail session.

Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
When I change the boot up theme in plymouth from the default, Fedora will not give me a login screen, or leave the plymouth splash screen, I like the spinfinity theme, however when I set that I cannot get to the login screen unless I hit esc when it is booting and never let the splash screen come up. This happens with both gdm and kdm. Anyone else having this problem?

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

I have opensuse 11.4 installed with both gnome and kde. These are the things I did before the problem:
1. changed the login screen to oxygen login screen
2. Then I logged off and when again logging in, I chose the session as Metacity.
But unfortunately, the the blank splash screen appeared and it didnt get into the desktop. Then I did a hard restart (By pressing the power button). Since then, I cannot login. The login screen is blank left only a active mouse pointer. Even booting into failsafe also didnt work.
By the way, I have chosen the option of directly logging in without password prompt at login. (during installation)
Only a week before i did a clean install since i corrupted the grub, dont wanna install again.
My system runs fine, I have an Nvidia card and when I boot up I guess it would be Plymouth displays some stuff; several lines and it goes by too quick for me to be able to read much of it.
Then it goes back to normal and the login in screen appears like normal. Everything is normal except for the black display and the stuff that is displayed before the login screen appears. Even with this, my system boots up in under 20 seconds at last check.
Is there anything I should/could do to get the errors or information lines or whatever they are to not show up?
I installed Lucid during beta (I think) and have kept up with the updates and all appears smooth to me. I have a super nice custom grub2 screen.
I tried to switch my Plymouth install from the default Kubuntu splash to Solar. Now, when I boot up, it shows a low-resolution default Ubuntu splash, with a monospaced-text logo. On shutdown, Solar displays, but at a very low resolution. How do I fix this?

I was transferring some files from an external hard drive onto my desktop computer running ubuntu 10.04...It filled up the hard drive to the max, rebooted and I couldn't login. Did some googling and thought it might be because it was too full so I plugged the ubuntu HDD into my laptop, removed some files and tried again. Still no luck.
What it does is tries to automatically login (that's how I have it set) at the main login prompt, it for some reason is not able to and the screen flickers a bit and shows the login screen. I enter my username and password and it flickers really quick and goes back to the login screen. Does this for my other user account as well. I can login via the command prompt (ctl-alt-f7) and do stuff there, but I cannot login to the GUI.
I'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?
I don't know what caused it, but as I boot into Ubuntu (9.10), the login screen never appears. Boot splash shows,then the cursor shows up but never the login screen. I haven't found anything that will reset the default gdm or login screen that works.

View 9 Replies View Relatedreally wish to customize my GDM for ubuntu 11.4 but failed to do so.....therefore i decided to use alt. such as SLiM.....I could install it properly in virtualbox but when i went to do it on my real ubuntu 11.4 ......the screen stops at plymouth theme or goes blank after loading plymouth theme......then i read further more blogs and made changes and now even if i configure SLim the GDM starts no matter what i do .........

So I have installed LXDE on my SuSE install to have a addition to the GNOME desktop. The installation went fine (of course). But I'm now faced with a problem with the transparency in LXDE, I have a box around my cairo-dock with a piece of my login screen background (looks like the well-known black-box bug. See Screen shot). This is a bit strange and I've been looking at the solutions for the black-box bug since I've had it before, but have not found a way to sort this yetv(though i have found many solutions for the black-box bug itself).
But, not only is this box around cairo-dock, the rest of the transparency in LXDE also shows the login screen background. See screen shot. Screen shot: [URL] As you can see, i haven't had time to work on the eye-candy yet.
I am trying to set up xfce so that I can be able to switch between multiple users. To do so I seem to need gdm. So I installed it from slackbuilds.org, but the login screen shows rectangles instead of text.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried installing 10.04 via Wubi on a friend's notebook and have hit problems with the display. The installation seemed to proceed OK (took ages to download / install - left it running overnight) until it came to boot to Ubuntu. The GRUB menu appears OK, but choosing Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with some icons at the bottom, which is displayed for a few seconds, then the (login?) screen just shows rolling display, like an out-of-tune analogue TV. I suspect that I need a graphics driver or something? The notebook is a logiQ notebook, with 128MB SiS Mirage-3 graphics.

My current setup is: i have a linux distro i used mandriva 2009 and i installed samba...if i used windows to browse in network i can see the name of the pc of linux and i can able to access the linux shared folder.
My problem is if the linux try to access the windows 2003 thru network it seems to be nothing happened coz everytime i click the linux network it shows me a blank after a few seconds...
I really dont have idea if there is any requirements for the windows.
I really want to implement the linux workstation but i still have a big problem issue in networking.
I fixed this issue on 10.04, but just recently (1 hour ago) upgraded to 10.10 and am having the same issue. Machine boots fine, but the screen is blank for most of the boot, and plymouth is up for about a half second before I get to the login screen.I've tried searching the threads, but for the life of me I can't find the solution and can't remember what I did to fix it on Lucid.

Both screen are identical 22" LCD LG W2246 Monitors.
I have Dual X-Display setup.
I am using Gnome Desktop.
The left hand screen displays everything, menus, panels, background and of course desktop launchers.
The right hand screen displays everything except the desktop launchers.
If I create a new launcher on the left it appears on the left desktop when created.
If I create a new launcher on the right it appears on the left and can not be dragged over to the right screen.
This is a very trivial thing, but when I SSH into my newly updated 10.04 server, the stats of the server are displayed on the screen twice. How can i fix it to just display once? After a lot of work, I think I have successfully written a script that displays the last login times of all users on a system. It gets the list of users from the directories in the /home folder and then finds the latest entry from the 'last' command for their login times. This may be a useful script for admins out there
I am not at all sure this is the best way of doing this or that there aren't ways that this script fails. At the moment, there are no users on my test system who haven't logged in so I am not actually sure that feature works. I imagine it does though. Please feel free to copy/use and/or criticize/correct. I would love it if we can make this script better. Take a look:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my Desktop computer. Prior to KDM loading, all I get is a blank, black screen with no Plymouth splash screen. I'm confident that this issue is not related to KDE but would apply to all Ubuntu variants. Here are my computer specs:
Kubuntu 10.04 x64 running with all updates
Dell Studio Desktop
Intel Quad-Core Processor 2.66Ghz
8GB ram
Intel Integrated Graphics
I should note that I have full desktop effects running smoothly under KDE with compositing enabled, so my integrated graphics is not necessarily the problem unless Plymouth is not loading the graphics drivers successfully.
I am trying to boot in to ubuntu 10.10 from a usb on my desktop but i can't seem to get past the purple screen with "ubuntu" and the flashing dots. The purple dots scroll for a bit but then all turn purple. I'm trying to do this on a hp compaq with a pentium 4 and from what i can tell nothing is wrong with it.

I entered my root username and password and it just seem to sit there forever and after a while it displays a blank page. I verified that all the necessary services have started. I have been troubleshooting this since yesterday with no luck.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have searched the forums on this problem and I am still not really clear on the fix for this or even if I should wait for final release. I am running Lucid 64bit and have upgraded through the cycle from Karmic. I am using nvidia proprietary drivers. All the time that the Plymouth boot screen has been available it has been in low resolution. As we are now at beta 2 I am torn between searching a fix or waiting for the final release. So, from what I have read I need the 'nouveau' driver to fix this issue.
1. How do I install this in place of my existing nvidia proprietary driver?
2. I am a little bit confused by the hardware drivers selection panel telling me that I have an nvidia driver installed but that it is not in use-I read that this might be a bug?
