10.04 Ubuntu / Gnome My system has just started crashing back to the Gnome login screen. Tried removing recently installed packages, as well as the repair broken packages from login screen.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi'm having a problem with lmms. unlike some posts in the forum, my lmms does output sound, but after a few minutes it crashes. the program itself will just happily go on, but any sound crashes. i hear a glitch, en thereafter no more sound. the only way to fix it is restarting lmms, which is quite a pain in the *** if you have to do that every 5 minutes . the problem occurs to me every time i use lmms, so it is consistent. it seems to me that it crashes faster when i have a bar that includes somekind of chord; a single tone it can handle, but when there's bi- tri- or multiple tones, it just crashes nearly instantly. i've tried both alsa and pulseaudio, and both have the same problems. and it's not my overall sound that's crashing: rhytmbox and videos will just continue to play sound .
View 3 Replies View RelatedLess than 2 days ago i upgraded from slackware 13.0 to 13.1.Since then, I have not been able to use my laptop for more than 15-20 minutes, 'coz the KDE screen freezes all of a sudden without any crash report and in some time the screen goes blank with just a mouse pointer to be seen (Black Screen of Death?)I can do a CTRL-ALT-F* to switch to a console a continue, or reboot (using console) to get the X server started again. (CTRL-ALT-Backspace does not work either).
View 9 Replies View RelatedWith Fedora 11, I got NetworkManager, and it never worked right.. Right now, the nm-applet crashes regularly, no message nothing, just disappears from the panel. I wrote a two-liner to run it in an infinite loop. But my wifi also disconnects every 10 minutes. It's like clockwork, it just disconnects. I see things about "error 38" in the logs. I tried downgrading, upgrading, nothing helped.

Have homebrewed machine, was running Fedora 8. Installed Fedora 10.Firestarter firewall manager keeps crashing after about 5 minutes. Restarts, runs for a while, then crashes.Thought it might be an IPTABLES turf war with the native Fedora 10 gui firewall manager, so disabled that at System > Admin > Firewall. Also disabled SElinux. Still have problems.Firestarter firewall seems to work OK, just the gui Firestarter monitor/manager.If anyone has ideas as to cause, I'll take a clue.I could use Firestarter to generate the IPTABLES by ..manually editing the /etc/firestarter/inbound|outbound/allow-.. files and then../etc/init.d/firestarter restartBut I find the events log useful to look at. Anyone know where the events log file is kept in the file system?

According to my coworkers this thing boot some version of debian about two years ago. currently I have used there old image and a new one I made of the latest Debian stable build. both images fail to get passed grub.
to be clear the BIOS simply replies "loading grub" takes ten minutes and then crashes.
has anyone ever had trouble with grub crashing systems? this problem seems odd since is did boot with this two years ago and i still have that image.
I am using ubuntu 10.4 on a Sony vaio and I never had troubles with the previous versions.just in those days something strange is happening. With no apparent reason, few applications running, the system will just freeze...sometimes I would be able to open a further application, some other things not. I have tried everything (in my knowledge)after which I simply use Alt F2, call the terminal and reboot (the only operation that the system will allow me to do.I have found no pattern of behaviour but his has happened with the following application running

Still having problems with the locked black screen freezing a couple of minutes in. I've done everything anyone has recommended on the other threads but nothing and it is driving me crazy. Please, does anyone have any ideas? I tried to install xfce4 but of course, screen froze and went black before I could fully download the software! I've tried the nomodeset but can't save it before doing a reboot (then went via terminal as quick as I could on start up to edit grub, but then... yes, it fell over and froze before I could hit save). So I'm giving this a lot of time I really don't have... such a shame I upgraded, 9.10 was working so well... alternatively,
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince the last Versions of openSUSE 11.3 and now with openSUSE 11.4 with KR46, I've a blocking system sometimes with all memory used (especially swap). KDE Hangs only the mouse works. The Harddisk is 100% used (HDD LED is always on). This blocking is about 5 minutes and 30 minutes. In this time only very minimum work is going on. If I switch with <ctrl>+<shift>+<F2> to the tty, a lock in needs 3 times (the password request is after the time out). top shows only 5% load with "gam_server" (first or secound entry -> most system load).

I have installed Fedora 12 as a workstation successfully, my hardware specification is Pentium 4 system with 2.8 GHz Processor having 512 MB Ram, which has 80 GB HDD, the primary partition where fedora 12 is installed is 20 GB, in primary part my root part is 5 GB, having 2 GB Swap part, also has Home partition which has 12 GB.
The system installed in KDE mode and works nicely, but after 30 or 40 minutes, it is hanged. I don't know why, then I restart the system to resolve it.
I am getting this message every 10 minutes, It looks like a virus, considering it's file is called DUMMY.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.
I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:

Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?
Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:
CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec
Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?
I am getting an error after the self boot sequence when after X minutes the system auto boots the highlighted option in my case it is mint 7 after that screen an error comes up with Random numbers and letters then Stuck?

The weird part is that sometimes it happen in less than 30 seconds , how can i figure out where the problem is ?
View 8 Replies View Relatedtoday i've installed kubuntu with wubi for windows 7 on my hp pavilion dv6 with processor Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz with 4 Gb of RAM @ 64bit with NVIDIA Geforce GT 230M but i've had some problems.Infact the system continued to freeze after some minutes due to overheating so i restarted the computer and the Bios told me that to prevent damage to internal components the computer has been freezed. I repeated the process and i checked out the temperature with the desktop widget and it actually reached after some minutes 80-85� C so i cleaned the computer and the temperature turned back to normal (50-60�C) but the problem continued to exist! After several minutes the computer freezed again and the BIOS told me the same things he told me before (90� and computer freezed due to prevent damage for overheating).

I use ubuntu now for several years (at least since 8.04) and I never had a system crash before. I have a P5P800SE motherboard, a celeron 3.06 GHz processor and use 512 MB of memory. Ubuntu is installed under windows XP professional version 2002 service pack 3.
If not I will return to version 9.10 and wait for version 10.10.
I have an old PC in my basement that I decided to load Ubuntu onto a few months ago. I ran version 9 for a while and then recently upgraded to10.04.Unfortunately, I've been having issues with intermittent system crashes using both versions. Sometimes the computer will work fine for hours and other times it will crash 20 seconds after startup. I'll be able to provide much more information tonight when I get home but for now I wanted to plant the seed in the forum and see if anyone has any ideas.The computer will be working fine and then all of a sudden the screen will go black and then start blinking, switching between a blank screen and a blank screen with a bunch of tiny white squares/lines. When I restart, things seem okay again.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 yesterday, and I've been trying to install my nvidia 240 drivers for it. I've done this multiple times on 9.## and it worked fine. When I try to install them it says i need to shutdown xserver. so I open terminal and type sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop screen goes blank and all there is is a flashing _ at the beginning. I'm not able to anything except type, but no commands work.
So, I tried starting it up in recovery mode root shell or whatever, and it shows the command prompt. Then I login, and it says welcome, I go to my downloads folder and type sudo sh NVIDIA...256.44.run and it says I need to be in telinit 3, so I get out of the installation and type sudo telinit 3.well that brings me up to a login command so I type my username then it askes for a password, which I also fill in.Now it says incorrect login. So I try again, and it keeps going on, but then I noticed that it puts the first letter of my username infront of Password.And the only way I can get out of that is by Alt + Ctrl + Del to restart, same when I shutdown gdm.
I have been using Kubuntu for a LOOONG time now, completely happily without any noticeable problems. But, on my birthday, with the help of a few contributions, I was finally able to upgrade my PC to a Core i7.
And for the most part, things are still smooth sailing. Except for Kopete, which randomly crashes at times, bring the entire beast of a PC to a halt. Basically what happens is it suddenly lets off notification gongs like a machine gun. Then there are windows that popup that say something about "Yahoo Plugin Error". And judging by the number that increases in the titlebar, it makes A LOT of those windows. But the contents of the window itself are never rendered. It usually gets up to about <105> before the entire system just freezes.
The only difference between my old system and this one, in terms of software is the change from 32 bit to 64 bit. If someone could tell me how to fix this problem, or just point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me insane!!
My laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 had suddenly go to a dark gray screen that will not take any kind of input other than holding to power button down for 5 seconds. I'm not running any new or odd programs just Firefox, Openofice writer, and Pidgin. When I turn the computer back on I do not see any kind of an error message. I'm looking for any advice that will help me find the cause of the problem.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWell, turns out that when I rebooted into the installed system a user setup utility launched, but now whenever I try to log in as me, X crashes and GDM starts up again, telling me to relog in.
Now it's the case of "A setup utility launches and I set up my user, only to try to log in and get kicked in the face by GDM, having done all that work for nothing".
Since having installed Lucid Lynx, I have several complete system crashes a day, no matter which applications I am using. Lucid crashes without any error message and the system reboots. I have had no problem whatsoever with Karmic Koala (also switched from ext2 to ext4 when installing Lucid Lynx). Is there any probable reason for that or a workaround? Can I paste any logs here for anybody to figure out what might be going on? When I try XP which is also install, the system won't crash (so far...), so I don't think it's a hardware problem.

When I play a video file whether with VLC or Movie Player the system will crash. The screen will go black with some text output (all I can quickly read is something about pulse audio) then flash black, then text, then black over and over. I tried to edit a video with Pitivi and the system crashed too. I saw an error about gstreamer that time. I set multimedia to No Xv and the test works but when playing an avi the system still crashes. If I test the multimedia with autodetect the system crashes.

I was told to remove boot media when rebooting, but that doesn't work either.
I've been using Ubuntu for quite a while, several years, though several upgrades. Experimented with various things, uninstalled some and various other messy activities. Some things don't work as well as they used to. Sometimes my system crashes, or hangs for a while before coming back. I still get a KDE screen when I shut down, though I attempted to uninstal that desktop. I would like to start over, that is with as little trouble possible to reinstall from scratch. Have to save my user directories, also the directories for my LAMP applications.
