Ubuntu :: Crash In Kernel During Boot (but System Boots)?

Apr 27, 2010

I have a custom compiled kernel which seems to work OK. However, during boot, I get:

Apr 27 21:16:14 poni kernel: eth0: Tigon3 [partno(BCM95784M) rev 5784100] (PCI Express) MAC address 00:21:70:90:2d:6c

System continues to boot OK and everything seems to work fine as I expect. I am not sure what the above causes. It looks related to USB, but I am not sure. lsusb gives:

Ubuntu Servers :: System Boots To Busybox - Error - Gave Up Waiting On Root Device

Aug 4, 2010

The system is an old AMD Duron 650MHz that was dug out of the garbage, trying to set it up as a light duty server. I installed ubuntu 10.04 with no errors or troubles during the install, however whenever the system is booted it sits at a cursor for about a minute then goes into busybox giving the error "Gave up waiting on root device." and says that the hard drive does not excist. If I sit at busybox for about another minute and type exit it then boots ubuntu 10.04 with no errors or issues.

I've tried to install 9.10 on my PowerBook G3, with both a CD and DVD. However, the system shows a folder with a question mark and boots into the default OS 8.6. I even tried with an older ubuntu disc (8 point something) that had worked on another computer, but this didn't work either. I know the computer can boot from the CD drive, as it works with my OS X 10.4 DVD.

Fedora :: Autologin - Not So Auto / Can't Push Power Button And Come Back In X Minutes With Everything And Running?

May 29, 2010

I upgraded to F13 this week. And autologin just sits with autologin present, but I have to click the autologin (rather than a user name) and then click again to actually login. That's not so "auto" anymore if I can't push the power button and come back in x minutes with everything and running.

I had this in my /etc/gdm/custom.conf
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=marty
TimedLoginDelay=8
What changed and what do I need to do now to get autologin to get off it's ass and log me in?

Ubuntu :: When Select - Option To Boot Windows At The Grub Menu - Error

Jan 10, 2010

I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot system with Windows XP very carefully. Unfortunately, though given the option to boot Windows at the grub menu, when I select it, I get an error. Booting Ubuntu on my other partition works just fine, no issues.

I also attempted to access files from the first partition in Ubuntu using gparted, but once I mounted it, all of my files were not present. I only saw manufacturer files, and many files and folders I didn't recognize.

Also, as an aside, my laptop monitor is suffering from occasional black-outs during use. Ubuntu gave me a little toolbar flag, telling me to go to a website and use the patches given to fix it, but I'm not quite so sure where to input the given patch text. Do I really need to go through the trouble of finding the source code, etc., or is it more simple?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Sequence With Dual Boot And Two Drives?

Dec 10, 2010

recently sent up another computer as follows:Two sata drives. Windows 7 was installed on the first drive(sda)and booted successfully. This drive was disconnected ( I have had some installs where Unbuntu wipes out the existing C drive eventhough I am installing to D) and Ubuntu was installed to the second drive (sdb). At one point I had to rebuild the grup on the Ubuntu drive and was careful to make it installed on the Ubuntu drive. To my surprise when the PC booted up I saw the Grub menu with a menu entry for Windows. The Windows drive was always the primary drive before the Ubuntu install. I was planning on the Windows drive being the boot drive and using a boot manager to determine where to go from there. If I utilize the BIOS boot option (F12) I can boot each drive individually. I cannot in BIOS set a particular drive to boot - just a hard drive. Everything is working I am just curious why the primary drive does not boot first. IN BIOS the Windows drive is a primary SATA with a lower number that the Ubuntu drive which is listed as a secondary drive.

Programming :: Bootstrap Not Starting U-boot In The Normal Boot Sequence

Oct 5, 2010

I am facing a problem with my AT91SAM9260 customized board. Board is almost same as the evaluation kit.

I could download the binaries ( Bootstrap-v1.16, u-boot-1.3.4, linux kernel 2.6.20) successfully to the DATAFLASH/NANDFlash in my board by using atmel SAM-BA tool with usb/serialport/jlink.

Here I describe the problem.

When I power up the board, boot strap is not jumping to U-boot location, in the normal boot sequence and board stuck with bootstrap.

But when I disconnect/connect the JTAG USB cable ( provided with SAM-BA ICE) , it's jumping to u-boot location and booting the board properly. I'm getting the same error in NAND FLASH also.

I have tried one more test case.I copied bootstrap binary at the flash location, [location which is specified for u-boot binary] instead of U-boot.bin (location: 0x8400 in dataflash), I got continous bootstrap debug messages in my console. [ So can I conclude SDRAM doesn't have any problem? ]

Bootstrap code or U-boot code ?

Ubuntu :: Don't Use Auto Login Option

May 16, 2010

Ubuntu install offers the option of automatically logging one in at startup.If you choose this option, you are logged in automatically. However, you are still asked for your password, to unlock your keyring. So all you have done, is saved yourself one click (or one key press of the enter-key).The downside, is that there is no delay of your automatically started programs that maybe wait for you to log in. These can start using improperly initialized resources - like the keyring, I suppose.

In my case, this has resulted in the sound system failing. Restart then resulted in the sound being restored but the Trash folder going missing and so on. Finally, the Quit button on the task bar vanished forever. Perhaps I have identified the cause incorrectly, but that is my assessment and therefore I recommend not to use this login option.I am running 10.4 Gnome 64 bit. The program I started automatically, was Evolution.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Windows 7 Boot Option In Grub - Error 12: Invalid Device Request

Jan 12, 2011

I had a working dual boot Ubuntu 10 and Windows 7. Anyways long story short, I got it working again but have lost the boot option for windows 7. If i run fdisk -l, I get the following.

root@support-Latitude-E6400:/home/support# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders

[code]....

I installed gparted and can see that windows 7 is installed in dev/sda6. In another forum, i read that someone had to edit their menu.lst so i did with the following.

title=Windows 7
rootnoverify (hd0,6)
makeactive
chainloader +1

When i try to boot from windows 7, i get the following error. Error 12: invalid device request. How can i get my laptop to boot from windows again?

I am attempting to boot Ubuntu off of a USB drive. The USB drive was created via the USB creator in the .iso file dowloaded from Ubuntu. But for some reason when I go into my BIOS and boot from the USB drive, it spits out one line of syslinux and copyright information ending in "et al" and then a flashing cursor but doesn't go any further. I would provide a screenshot but that isnt an option at the moment with not being able to get past the first line of booting. Also, I have never used Ubuntu as this is my first attempt at running it and it is obviously not going the best.
