OpenSUSE :: Gam_server - Blocks The System Over 15 Minutes?

May 4, 2011

Since the last Versions of openSUSE 11.3 and now with openSUSE 11.4 with KR46, I've a blocking system sometimes with all memory used (especially swap). KDE Hangs only the mouse works. The Harddisk is 100% used (HDD LED is always on). This blocking is about 5 minutes and 30 minutes. In this time only very minimum work is going on. If I switch with <ctrl>+<shift>+<F2> to the tty, a lock in needs 3 times (the password request is after the time out). top shows only 5% load with "gam_server" (first or secound entry -> most system load).

System information:
AMD 9450e Quad-Core

Software :: DynDns - Getting Error Message Every 5 Minutes

Mar 4, 2009

I have a registered account with DynDns, and every month I am sent a reminder that my account will expire because it is not in use (i.e. inactive). I think the problems stems from my system's inability to register itself on a periodic basis using ddclient. This is the error I am getting:

Mar 4 06:53:09 iceland ddclient[2352]: WARNING: cannot connect to socket: IO::Socket::INET: Bad hostname ''
When I ping '', I do so successfully. I can also connect to its port 80 (using a port-scanner application I developed). So why the error? I get the same error message every 5 minutes. I have a Fedora 9 OS. Below is the relevant portion of my /etc/ddclient.conf file (with the username and password changed for security purposes):

## To obtain an IP address from Web status page (using the proxy if defined)
use=web,, web-skip='IP Address' # found after IP Address ...
Somehow I feel that the contents of /etc/hosts may be responsible for the error, but I'm not sure.

# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail. localhost.localdomain localhost iceland.localdomain iceland
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost
My system's name is 'iceland'.

OpenSUSE :: System Crash After Enabling Cube Desktop / Sort It?

Feb 20, 2010

I recently installed openSuse 11.2 KDE in a Dell 1535 laptop.

I tried to enable the Cube desktop feature through desktop settings and when I pressed the apply button the system crashed. The screen freezed and the laptop wasn't responding to anything.

So I rebooted the laptop and now every time gets stack in the green screen and trying to load but it never does. I suspect that it has to do with my ATI card because a couple of 3d games would crash the system too. I tried some solutions that I found here like disabling the desktop effects by tweaking kwinrc file but it didn't worked.

Does anyone know how to disable that Cube feature from failsafe mode?

OpenSUSE Install :: System Log Message Every Second

Apr 11, 2010

Whenever our computer goes into sleep mode/screensaver under my wife's login, it stalls and will not wake up. Doesn't happen under any other user logins (go figure ). While trying to troubleshoot that issue, I reviewed the system log via YaST. I got a LOT of Apr 11 15:25:52 linux-d8dy kernel: sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive.

And by a lot, I mean it is every second. I don't have anything looking for a CDROM file that I know of. Can someone tell me what is causing this? Is there a way to make it stop?

Security :: Create A Virus In Android Operating System?

Dec 31, 2010

I just read the above article. Someone in Communist China has found a way to create a virus in the Android operating system. Android is a Linux fork.

It looks as though the virus is quite specific: it only works on certain apps downloaded from Communist China. I'm hoping that the Google Android version of Linux is different enough from the standard Linux it was "forked" off of that it will be of no concern to we desktop Linux users.

Does this mean that we Linux users must begin running anti-virus software as a continuous process now? What is the chance standard distros will be affected?

Ubuntu :: System Crashing Every 5 Minutes

Oct 9, 2010

I am using ubuntu 10.4 on a Sony vaio and I never had troubles with the previous versions.just in those days something strange is happening. With no apparent reason, few applications running, the system will just freeze...sometimes I would be able to open a further application, some other things not. I have tried everything (in my knowledge)after which I simply use Alt F2, call the terminal and reboot (the only operation that the system will allow me to do.I have found no pattern of behaviour but his has happened with the following application running

Firefox, Openoffice and Rhythmbox
Firefox and Torrent

now Firefox alone (yes it might be firefox...but still, if I am not wrong it happened also when firefox was shut and I was working on openoffice)now I have logged on into xfce environment to write this message (and I am using Midori as browser)..

Mar 24, 2011

if my PC lags a bit it crashes!But I wouldn't think it would be an ordinary crash.Earlier today I installed Xubuntu 10.04onto my PC. Well, The installation was smooth and I was able to get it installed. Then all of a sudden when I was looking aroundmy PC got caught in a little lag.. And when it lagged this black screen came up and it said

"Starting Common Unix System; cupsd [ OK ] "
"Checking Battery State [ OK ] "

Then That screen disappears and these Straight gray bars come up and they cover the top of my screenAnd they just blink! I figured it might be a glitch so I went to go eat dinner.About 20-30 minutes later I come back and there still blinking.I tryed rebooting the system and trying again and it got cought in a little lag and the

"Starting Common Unix System; cupsd [ OK ] "
"Checking Battery State [ OK ] "

Came back up and it disappeared again and the bars came back!I tried reinstalling Xubuntu 10.04 but it came out the same result.I tried updating the system cause when I installed it it said I had 164 updates waiting.

Ubuntu Security :: Virus Resides In The MBR And "rebuild" The MBR To Actually Remove The Virus?

Jul 15, 2010

I have a dual boot computer. The WindowsXP "side" has been infected with a rootkit virus. So far UBUNTU has not been affected to my knowledge. I have not yet removed the virus from the WindowsXP "side". I am thinking of deleting the NTFS partition and have the computer fully dedicated to UBUNTU. Now for my question. Is there a possibility that the virus resides in the MBR and that I need to "rebuild" the MBR to actually remove the virus?

Even more extreme, should I totally re-install UBUNTU in the name of safety and precaution.

OpenSUSE :: How To Make Sure I Didnt Get A Virus

Feb 16, 2010

I know that running linux makes you safer from viruses, since viruses are mostly windows based, however IMHO there are still chances to get some kind of viruses or better said some malicious code in scripts/cookies via browsing. I'm no expert if this field and would therefore need some of your advice. So the thing that made me think, happened yesterday, when I, as a registred user on forum Allgemeines Forum got an email, from one, who obviously didn't have good intentions. I did report the mail on the forum, here Forum abused?!you can check the thread with original mail I got. I did follow the link in the mail to check what is it about, and saw a script that fired up, pretending that it scans my computer for viruses and as a result showed that I have many viruses on my pc on various places. Quickly I saw it can't be true, since the content on the page displayed was showing as if I had a Win xp system. And when I tried to click to close it, it offered me some exe file to install, at that point I closed the browser and didn't download the file. However I am a bit in doubt if anything else downloaded automatically without my confirmation (a cookie, script,..), which executes with the help of the browser and is not OS dependent. So now I wonder how could I check I didn't get anything malicious? The most threatening I find some potential "key logger" which would monitor my input on password protected areas I browse. Browsing around I found a nice site showing how to protect you browser better Securing Your Web Browser and I tend to follow some of the advices mentioned for firefox. I know that for safe browsing it is not just the browser responsible, but also the user using it. So any your advices from this field would be appreciated and by posting this, I would also like to point at some most tricky ways, that some f****** imbeciles try to use in order to steal private data, so watch out.

General :: `mencoder` Captures 10 Minutes Of Audio In Less Than 10 Minutes?

Mar 15, 2011

I'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.

I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:

$ time mencoder -really-quiet -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1:chanlist=us-cable:audiorate=32000:alsa:adevice=hw.1:input=0:amode=1:normid=11 -endpos 00:10:00 -ovc copy -oac pcm -of rawaudio -o test-32000.wav tv://69
real 9m54.886s
user 0m5.536s
sys 0m1.740s
$ ls -l test-32000.wav
-rw-r--r--@ 1 martin martin 76800000 Mar 15 17:20 test-32000.wav

Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?

Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:

CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec

Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?
