One thing that really annoys me with Ubuntu 11 is that every time I move a window and it touches the top of the screen it maximizes
I have been looking for a while now to find a way to stop this from happening but couldn't find anything

Unity always maximizes firefox when I open it, is there a way to turn this off?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI like having Maximus working on my netbook for most programs. There are a few I found it annoying for and I was able to successfully tell Maximus to exclude them (Tomboy and the terminal).
However, I can't figure out what the window name for Nautilus is to tell Maximus to exclude it. I've tried Nautilus and nautilus (not sure if case matters)..
I just updated to 11.04. I tried to keep an open mind while using Unity, but I just couldn't deal with the totally unorganized application menu, so I switched back to the regular Gnome desktop. There's something that bugs me, though: when I drag the titlebar of a window up to the top of the screen, it maximizes the window, or more accurately, it "grows" the window depending on how far up I drag it, up to the maximum size of the screen. I don't have any desire to use this method to make my windows larger, and it also prevents me from dragging windows to the virtual desktop above the current one (I have edge-flipping turned on). How to disable this? I installed the compiz config manager installed but can't seem to find the right option.

Using Wheezy on an Acer Aspire One 5737 laptop. After a recent update now when I drag an open window around on the desktop it well wobbles in a distorted manner, the same goes when scrolling the page doesn't scroll smoothly it, well, wobbles. I have had the same issue in the past with Lenny on a laptop and I had to install video drivers it fix it however I 'think' Debian now supplies it's own drivers, is this correct? I'm not all that good with the video aspects of Linux. Is there something I need to check or maybe reinstall to correct thsi problem?
The Mrs is not so accurate with the mouse and playing kpatience etc.. she seems to click the top or bottom edge of the maximized window ( as if to drag a card ) but ends up dragging the window, which moves and re-sizes
I tried it in Gnome and my maximized windows don't drag.
So is there a solution for kde. I guess it's a feature. I had a stab around in systemsettings, but couldn't put my finder on it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have searched long and hard for an answer to this one, only to discover that this is apparently a long-standing, unresolved bug. Therefore, I am looking for some sort of workaround that resolves the issue without having to revise my desktop layout in the process.I am running a dual monitor setup through nVidia's TwinView setting. The primary monitor is 1600x900, secondary is 1440x900, and the secondary is placed to the right of primary. I am running Lucid with the compiz window manager.
On the primary monitor's portion of the screen area, I have a right- and bottom-side panel, and the secondary monitor has only a bottom-side panel. When maximizingapplications on the primary monitor, the bottom-side panel area is taken into account and the vertical resize ends there. However, the application maximizes underneath the right-side panel to the monitor's full horizontal dimension and thereby becomes partially obscured. The issue, as best I can tell, is that the window manager does not recognise a panel that is officially positioned in the center of the X screen as being a boundary despite it being linked to the right edge of the monitor, which does qualify as a boundary.
Causing the application to maximize over the panel is not an acceptable solution, as it denies me access to the utilities I have set up there. The so-called "autohide" is also unacceptable, as that simply causes the panel to drift onto the secondary monitor and then enter a loop where it flips back and forth between monitors when I attempt to access it.
When i minimize, maximize or resize a window, instead to do that instantly, it gets stuck for a second, i dont know why. I have disabled compiz and i have tried a few other things but is still not working as it should.

Running new 10.04, using proprietary ATI drivers for Mobile Radeon 3650
Using gnome I love the desktop effects, except the 'maximize window' effect. There is an annoying delay when I maximize a window. Is there a way to turn this particular effect off, while leaving all the others on. I looked in control center>desktop effects, but the option is not there. The only way I could turn off the maximize effect was unchecking the "enable desktop effects" checkbox. But this turns all effects off. All other effects run smooth and snappy.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed windows xp on my tobisha satellite l305, then installed ubuntu 9.10..my friend's laptop had vista and was SOOO bogged down from viruses, so he wanted to try ubuntu. We installed ubuntu, leaving the other half of his hard drive unallocated.Afterwards we installed xp, on the unallocated space, but it wouldn't let me dual boot... it would boot directly into xp, however, the ubuntu partition was still there because through the file system in xp we could find it.So then run gparted on a live CD, delete the ubuntu parition, leaving it unallocated, then installed it over that unallocated space.
now, when i dual boot it shows on the grub page the option to boot to ubuntu, ubuntu (recovery) and these two memory test things that when i ran it just shows a BIOS looking screen.testing my memory. However, on the desktop i have mounted 79gb which has all the windows files in it.so how do I tell ubuntu to stop hoarding everything and share the boot screen with windows xp?
In 11.04, how can I disable windows automatically resizing when they're dragged to an edge? It's incredibly irritating.

For example, I want to move a file from one window to another. I click the middle mouse button on that item and drag it to the first one which looses it's focus so often it's quite irritating.

I would like to maximize wine, folder explorer, media players, and etc to one screen, instead of across both, which it is currently doing that. Using Separate X [xinerama] + twinview, but I have also tried without xinerama + twinview. When maximizing applications and such, it will only maximizes across both of the monitors in the twinview setup, not the separate X on the left. The separate x has maximizing working to that one screen. I have tried to add xorg tweets, but that's not working, and they are currently in my xorg post below. I had maximizing to one screen working perfectly with dual monitor setup. :S And, I am currently getting an error about " Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0""

I have both Computer and Display set to NEVER SLEEP in power management. yet after about five minutes of inactivity, Ubuntu always blanks out the screen (i.e., just a black monitor screen but the monitor power light is still on).How do I stop this? I want to continue to see what is on my desktop--I do not want the screen to blank out ever.

Previously, I attempted to embed a terminal as part of the desktop but I have deleted all the scripts and packages used, yet the terminal still appears. It is not an embedded terminal, but it does not have the panel at the top. It appears as a window on the lower panel of my screen. Is there anyway to stop this from appearing, so I can then attempt to start over with embedding a terminal in the desktop?

When i have a video running and i switch to another desktop or throw another window on top of it to do something real quick the player will turn gray and stop playing.
This is a problem for me because i like to have them playing in the background then link them from tmp to home so i can watch them later.
I've set up a RAID6 array with a normal hard disk (/dev/sda) for boot. However whilst rebooting the computer I noticed that ubuntu is booting into a splash screen asking me: Can't mount /dev/md0 (which is my RAID6 array) Press s to skip, c to continue, something along those lines. The reason for this is that one of the drives from the RAID6 array was showing Uncorrectable read errors towards the end of the disk.I was unaware of. I'm in the process of replacing this.
As this server is completely headless (all I have remotely is SSH), I had to plug in a monitor and keyboard to find out that all I had to do was press S to get it to boot. Wasted around an hour for that!
So my question is, how do I get Ubuntu to stop automatically trying to mount /dev/md0 before it boots? Booting so that I can get SSH access is more important than getting the raid drive. Here is my /etc/fstab file (note I've put a # in front of /dev/md0, sdg1 and sdh1 are external ESATA drives, UUID is the swap):

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been running Ubuntu 10.04 since it came out using two monitors, on the extended desktop option (the way I want it to be) with no problems. Today I unplugged the HDMI cable from my laptop and used it for my ps3 and now when I put the HDMI back in it will only run in the mirror desktop option. This is not acceptable to me as my 2nd monitor is a 50inch tv with a much higher resolution than my laptop.
When I uncheck the "Same image in all monitors" box it says to log out and back in. Doing this changes nothing(neither has restarting), it is still a mirrored screen.
When I click the detect monitors button absolutely nothing happens. Before today the detect monitors button did work.
How can I go about fixing this?
Edit: Also I just watched a show on the laptop and theres a lot of screen tearing, this didn't happen before.
My F11 system display goes blank after some time of inactivity and I cannot see how to disable it. It does not appear to t eht screen savers (all turned off). I have an NVIDIA card,, is it in the card?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a little brother who is handicapped and uses the machine he was sat by the computer with a blank screen at which point my dad soft rebooted the machine (he will sit at the machine if its not working but he cant tell us its not working). I don't know if the below caused the machine to stop displaying?

Why, after a successful (I thought) dual boot installation w/ a side-by-side lynx and meerkat install and XP does my system refuse to boot? It just gets to the Dell screen, giving boot options (none of which are making any difference) and keeps looping it. Last night, after re-installing the grub (lost after the XP install) everything was working fine. I powered down and this morning tried to restart and...this. I really don't want to have to reinstall everything and reconfigure and reinstall apps--what can I do? And more importantly, WTF did this happen to begin with?
