Ubuntu :: Disable Window Resizing When Dragged To An Edge?

May 9, 2011

In 11.04, how can I disable windows automatically resizing when they're dragged to an edge? It's incredibly irritating.

Ubuntu :: Disable Window Maximize When Titlebar Dragged To Top Of Screen?

Apr 29, 2011

I just updated to 11.04. I tried to keep an open mind while using Unity, but I just couldn't deal with the totally unorganized application menu, so I switched back to the regular Gnome desktop. There's something that bugs me, though: when I drag the titlebar of a window up to the top of the screen, it maximizes the window, or more accurately, it "grows" the window depending on how far up I drag it, up to the maximum size of the screen. I don't have any desire to use this method to make my windows larger, and it also prevents me from dragging windows to the virtual desktop above the current one (I have edge-flipping turned on). How to disable this? I installed the compiz config manager installed but can't seem to find the right option.

Ubuntu :: Change 'line Width' For Window Edge Resizing?

Dec 2, 2010

This has bugged me forever.....and I mean really bugged me. The 'pixel width' is too low, such that trying to get my mouse to line up just perfectly on the window edge to get the resize icon, is very difficult. After a bit of searching, I discovered Alt F8, which, for those that don't know, is a resize shortcut and works very well, however, I will still use the 'edge resizing' option quite a bit, and would like to widen the 'line' a few pixels. Is this possible in a user settings file, or is this hardcoded? I am learning to develop, so I wouldn't mind looking into this one as a beginning project. If that's the case, could someone point me to the appropriate package?

Ubuntu :: Grabbing Edge Of Windows When Resizing

Aug 17, 2010

I've got a basic install (i.e., nothing fancy, no compwiz or whatever) of 10.4 (64 bit) on my computer, running gnome desktop. I find it very difficult to "grab" the edge of a window, when I want to resize it longer or wider and frequently I just wind up selecting the window below it when I try to drag it wider or longer. Is there a way to increase the border area in which that arrow-pointing-to-edge (as opposed to the usual cursor) appears to make it easier to grab the damn thing?

Fedora :: Nano - Editing Lines That Go Past The Window Edge?

Nov 22, 2009

I noticed a problem when editing files with nano. This problem happens if the terminal window that I run nano from is not wide enough to show the full line.By way of example below is part of my grub.conf

Code:

title Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64)
root (hd0,13)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 ro root=UUID=47e4c448-8087-4ec6-a67b-814845a598db noiswmd LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us vga=0x370 nouveau.modeset=0
initrd /boot/initramfs-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64.img

If we assume the code box above is the size of the terminal window, if I edit anything past what will show as the $ sign in nano, it will automatically add a carriage return. So if we take the kernel line above, if say the screen shows at the end root=UUID=$, if say I were then to add 00 the end of the UUID, it will move everything starting from root=UUID= to a new line. Is there some wrap feature that is enable in Fedora for nano?

Ubuntu :: Gnome: Maximize A Window To Half The Screen By Dragging It To The Left/right Edge?

Jul 9, 2010

KDE and Windows7 both have a nice feature/setting that lets you maximize a window to half the screen by dragging it to the left or right edge of the screen.

Edit: Use Compiz Grid:

Code:

sudo apt-get install compiz-fusion-plugins-extra

Slackware :: Rxvt Or Any Other Console Doesn't Make A New Line At Edge Of Window

Aug 17, 2010

I have a slight problem. Whenever I type something in rxvt, and sometimes it's a loooong something, I end up having to make it span multiple lines, as do you, probably. Anyway, my problem is that if I'm in any console at all, (aside from the TTY console and such) and I try to go multiple lines, this is what happens:

Code:

[root@SectionI13] > aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
After the first pass...

Code:

aaaaaaaectionI13] > aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
And after the second pass...

Code:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Now, I'd be fine and dandy with this, if it wasn't so hard to figure out what I was typing after the first pass, because it's just plain hard to understand a command when there's the second half of it in front of the first half of it.

Ubuntu :: Show Contents While Resizing A Window?

Jan 24, 2010

Anyone know the trick to getting Ubuntu to show the contents of a window while I resize it? It WAS doing this until I loaded up the drivers for my Nividia Quador 135M (works great!) I'm very happy with my Ubuntu 9.10, I even have all the bouncy window effects running.

Still, I would love get rid of the "faded blue resizing box" and see the contents instead.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Window Resizing Very Slow And Laggy

Sep 16, 2010

Ever since I installed 10.04 my window resizing has been incredibly slow. The type or resizing I mean is when you grab the bottom-right corner or one of the sides. I used to use 9.04 a while back and never had this issue. I have an nVidia 8400. My monitor is a Dell 22" widescreen at 1680x1050 resolution and 60hz. I do not have any visual effects turned on.

Here is my xorg.conf:

OpenSUSE :: Resizing Oversized Window To Install Updates

Aug 14, 2011

I installed openSUSE on my macbook pro 7,1. As of now I am trying to update the software, unfortunately, I have encountered a problem. As I hit the "Install Updates" icon, I get a window that gives me a readout of the current updates. No problem there. However, after I click the "Update" button, a second window pops up that gives a very long list of other software that needs to be either removed, installed, or updated for the original updates to be installed. Only problem is the list is so long, it extends beyond the visible desktop. This is a problem because I cannot click on the button to install those updates. The window cannot be re-sized, so there is no way I can reach the button, and I have even tried rotating the desktop 90 degrees (to make it longer), but still to no avail, as the install button is out of reach even then. I don't know how I can update the software if I can't hit the right button. Is there perhaps another way to get around this (like with terminal)?

Ubuntu :: Disable Window Snap-to-screenbounds?

Sep 26, 2010

How can I disable gnome's behavior of snapping windows to screen bounds or other windows?

When I'm programming in supercollider, I have some GUI windows I can pop up to expose some real-time controls. For maximum use of screen space, some of the blank space at the windows' edges should be "out of bounds." On the Mac, and also when I've used supercollider in puredyne (an Ubuntu derivative for multimedia that uses xfce4 as the window manager), GUI windows are placed at the exact coordinates specified in my code.

But, gnome is "extra helpful" and says, "Oh, that window is going to be out of bounds. You couldn't possibly have meant that. Let me move the window inside the screen bounds for you." Well, actually I DID mean that and I don't want the window manager "correcting mistakes" that I fully intended. So then I have to move the windows by hand, even though my software put them where I wanted them in the first place.

Debian :: Opened Windows 'wobble' When Dragged Around On The Desktop

May 24, 2011

OK so that probably wasn't the best subject line as it was a hard one to describe.

Using Wheezy on an Acer Aspire One 5737 laptop. After a recent update now when I drag an open window around on the desktop it well wobbles in a distorted manner, the same goes when scrolling the page doesn't scroll smoothly it, well, wobbles. I have had the same issue in the past with Lenny on a laptop and I had to install video drivers it fix it however I 'think' Debian now supplies it's own drivers, is this correct? I'm not all that good with the video aspects of Linux. Is there something I need to check or maybe reinstall to correct thsi problem?

Ubuntu :: Disable ViewPoint Change On ALT+TAB (window Switcher)

May 10, 2010

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and I don't like the fact the my viewpoint is being change when I use the window switcher (ALT+TAB). I tried going to the gconf-editor and changing the /apps/compiz/plugins/staticswitcher/screen0/options/auto_change_vp value to false, restarted.. it IS set to false, the CompizConfig settings manager shows that it is false, but for some reason it is still changing the viewpoint.

I tried disabling the window switcher completely just to see that the configuration works at all.. and it did work.. so, I'm not sure what to do so the view point won't change.

Ubuntu :: Disable Or Customize Some Of Preview Settings On Alt-tab Window

Aug 17, 2011

how to disable or customize some of the preview settings on the alt-tab window..MY Question is if its possible to disable the "Grouping" part..such as having multiple nautilus windows.primarily thunderbird is the largest annoyance.. if im writing an email on my laptop and accedentally (touchpad 'palming') off the 'compose message' window; by default and second nature, my brain tells my fingers to alt-tab back into it.

alt tab doesnt allow tabbing into the sub-groups..you CAN although use the arrow keys combined with alt-tab, and eventually find your way down into the hierarchy, and to the right email. this is much too much work compared to a simple alt-tab once, like most other situations.i did notice an option to disable touchpad while youre typing in the settings. is there a gconf entry to adjust the delay? or how many keys need to be typed before its disabled?

problem there, is that if i hit return, or esc, or delete, or pretty much anything that should just be a QUICK one button press, and back to the touch pad, results in waiting 2-3 SECONDS.
