Ubuntu Installation :: Input Not Supported (Error Message)

May 27, 2011

I recently tried to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04. At first, the installation seemed to go smoothly, but when I tried to boot up, my screen displayed the following error message:

Input Not Supported

I am unsure how this is happening, since I was able to install 10.10 successfully. To better assist, I am attaching detailed information about my computer system.

Debian :: Input Not Supported Floating On Screen On Boot Up

Oct 14, 2010

Brand new to Linux. Just installed Debian 5.0.6 (64-bit). Upon booting up, the screen is all black with a gray floating screen that says "Input Not Supported". My guess is that the video card is not supported by Debian, but maybe somebody knows a way around this problem... (I know for a fact that both video card and LCD work fine in Windows XP.)

My hardware:
* Video card: ATI Radeo HD 4850
* LCD: Acer V193W

General :: Input Not Supported Message When Monitor Is Powered Off Then Back On?

Mar 27, 2010

I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time).

Specs:
Acer X203w monitor
Radeon 9600 Pro Video card
Linux Mint 8 (Helena)
Resolution 1680 x 1050 (16:10 - Preferred native resolution for the monitor)
Refresh Rate 60hz

[Code]...

I just had it happen again. I tried unplugging the DVI cable from the back of the computer and then plugging it back in. The monitor then displayed the desktop properly. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not in what I may need to change settings-wise.

Ubuntu :: 'Minimal BASH-Like Line Editing Is Supported' At Startup?

Aug 22, 2010

So I turn on my PC this morning, and it comes up with this telling me to use 'TAB' to see a bunch of options I can use, not knowing any idea on how to use them properly I type in 'boot', it returns with 'error: no kernel' and then I type 'exit', it just reboots.

I've scanned endless posts on the forum trying to find the most useful replies and tried to use 'find /grub/stage2' and 'find boot/grub/stage2' and it says 'find is not a command' so that failed. I then tried to find out the partition my installation is in, which is hd0,1 so I tried using 'setup (hd0,1) which returned with 'setup is not a command'. I even tried 'boot (hd0,1) but it returned with the first error 'error: no kernel'. Luckily, when I installed Ubuntu I dual-booted it with Windows so I'm still able to use the Internet but I would love Ubuntu back and I had a lot of important files on it. So does anyone know how to solve this?

By the way, the way I installed Ubuntu was through Windows using 'wibu', it's worked absolutely fine ever since this morning. Oh and I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (Loopy Lynx or whatever it's called ;p)(Also, for more information this screen appears after I choose 'Ubuntu' from the Windows bootloader, it doesn't even get to the Ubuntu bootloader it just goes straight to that screen)

Fedora :: Getting Console Input During System Startup?

Jan 26, 2010

I am setting up a system for students to use to run lab-based exams. On bootup, the system needs to download an encrypted file containing the exam files, and then ask for a decryption password.

I want to do this during system startup (before anyone logs in). But I am having trouble getting keyboard input at this point.

I've put a script in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99examsetup along the following lines:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo -n "Enter password:"
read EXAMPW
echo "You gave me: $EXAMPW"

but it doesn't respond to keyboard input. I have tried appending "< /dev/console" but this also doesn't work; in fact if I insert 'tty' before the first 'echo', it tells me that /dev/console is the tty being used for input anyway.

Is there a way round this? I can use plymouth ask-for-password, but that doesn't seem very portable, and it interacts badly with the graphics driver on one of my machines.

Ubuntu :: No Session Manager Under "System/Preferences", No Startup Programs Manager

Jun 6, 2010

Hello - installed 10.04 yesterday, Had previously dabbled, trying to switch over to Ubuntu full time now. Wanted to access the session manager, but when I scroll to System/Preferences, there is no entry for it, or for the startup programs manager. Also, I'm getting the following error when attempting to open the "windows" entry: Failed to execute child process "gnome-window-properties" (No such file or directory)

Did I somehow botch something in gnome which is now leading to the absence of the session manager as well as the inability to launch the "windows" manager?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot After Using Update-manager: No Input Detected?

Apr 19, 2011

using a rather incompatible laptop (Gateway ID49C) with 10.04; by this I mean that I have problems with sound output, brightness control, keypad functionality, occasional freezes, etc.Anyway, the Update Manager popped-up last night, proposing me to download some 400 Mbs of "updates" to installed programs, I presume. I told him to go ahead. After downloading, it proceeded to install the updates, and I left the computer unattended. Hours later, I came back to find the computer hibernating: it woke up to show me update manager freezed on some grub update, to my horror.

I shut it down. Now, whenever I try to boot, I find a very low quality 10.04 text with four white dots that "fill up" as it boots (instead of the fancy logo), then the user selection thing pops-up. No response from keyboard or keypad. Howver, the system is NOT frozen, since the visible clock actually works.I can access GRUB (I have a dual boot) but the recovery mode does not work: it freezes at some point.

Ubuntu :: No Appearance Tab In StartUp-Manager?

Mar 29, 2010

I am creating a custom distro of Ubuntu for a company, changing a few things to meet their needs. One of the things I would like to change is the splash screen, but for some reason the "appearance" tab does not appear in StartUp-Manager.

Splashy still has the bug where it can't be installed due to a conflicting package in Ubuntu, so I believe that this is the only way to do it.

Running 9.10 (the system i'm trying to change) on a dual boot configuration with 10.04 as my main OS.

Ubuntu :: Changed Graphics Resolution In STARTUP MANAGER ?

Jan 17, 2010

I just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?

The weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptom im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.

Ubuntu :: Use StartUp-Manager To Increase The Resolution Of The GRUB Menu?

Aug 5, 2010

I was wanting to use StartUp-Manager to increase the resolution of the GRUB menu and the boot logo screen. Changing the resolution for the GRUB menu works fine. But the Ubuntu logo that should show up during the boot process is all scrambled across the screen. I tried multiple resolutions to fix it and none of them work. How do I restore everything back to their defaults? I tried putting the numbers all back to where they where when I first ran StartUp-Manager but that didn't fix it.

Ubuntu :: Startup-Manager No Longer Shows No Of Kernels Option?

Dec 5, 2010

I've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Startup Manager / Software Center Bugs

Apr 3, 2011

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 Beta using
sudo update-manager -d
I used Startup-Manager to change the boot default to the last item on the list. I noticed that it was always booting to the first item on the list. As an experiment, I chose one item before last. Now it boots to the last item on the list.

I noticed that grub boot menu shows latest linux kernel as first followed by the recovery version, then there is a sub-menu for previous versions (there were 2 in my case if I choose the previous versions. After that there is memtest and another memtest (serial) and finally the Win 7. I noticed that the StartUp-Manager does not show the sub-menu. It shows all the 7 menus. I think this is a bug in StartUp-Manager in 11.04. Also, I downloaded dropbox .deb and tried to install with Software Center. It gave me an error.

However,
sudo dpkg -i nautilus-dropbox_0.6.7_i386.deb
did the job.
I had to the same with skype install. Software Center did install what were in its list. I tried vlc and emacs.
T=I checked the file permissions of ~/.cache/software-center

The Synaptec startup-manager for ubuntu 10.4 is horrible. It gives you a laundry list of kernels and operating systems and asks you to pick one. I had a gnome (?) boot loader app on another system and it had a slick gui which let you order the list, inspect the vmlinuz and initrd for existence, make suggestions for appropriate entries, had an advanced mode for chain loading, etc. It had ~40 features. This one has exactly 7 and looks like a high school compsci 101 homework assignment [ ].
