Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Startup Manager / Software Center Bugs

Apr 3, 2011

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 Beta using
sudo update-manager -d
I used Startup-Manager to change the boot default to the last item on the list. I noticed that it was always booting to the first item on the list. As an experiment, I chose one item before last. Now it boots to the last item on the list.

I noticed that grub boot menu shows latest linux kernel as first followed by the recovery version, then there is a sub-menu for previous versions (there were 2 in my case if I choose the previous versions. After that there is memtest and another memtest (serial) and finally the Win 7. I noticed that the StartUp-Manager does not show the sub-menu. It shows all the 7 menus. I think this is a bug in StartUp-Manager in 11.04. Also, I downloaded dropbox .deb and tried to install with Software Center. It gave me an error.

However,
sudo dpkg -i nautilus-dropbox_0.6.7_i386.deb
did the job.
I had to the same with skype install. Software Center did install what were in its list. I tried vlc and emacs.
T=I checked the file permissions of ~/.cache/software-center

Fedora :: Lyx Bugs Or Window Manager Bugs?

Jun 30, 2011

I find that the FC 15 Xfce spin will save the user's current session except that it doesn't save what is being done with the Lyx editor. Under FC 15 Gnome 3, I found that after I added the minimize-maximize-close buttons to the top of windows, that some of the windows in Lyx (such as the one that appears for View as DVIPS) didn't respond to those buttons. (I don't remember whether Gnome 3 saved the Lyx session and I've gotten rid of Gnome 3 now.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager - Software Center Do Not Work

Jan 13, 2011

Update manager and software center both run, but when I click on "install," they both just sit there and don't respond. If I run software center from a command line, I get the error "WARNING - _on_trans_error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.Failed." (There are no updates right now, so I can't get an error from the update manager.) Apparently they aren't invoking gksudo or whatever it is they need to elevate privileges. I can get around this by running them as root, but it is kind of annoying. I'm really surprised that no one else has had this problem, but I've searched it a number of times and I can't find any indication of someone having the same symptoms.

General :: Synaptic Package Manager Versus Ubuntu Software Center

Feb 21, 2011

This is my first Linux experience so probably at the prenewbie level. I have installed Xubuntu and played with it for a couple weeks. The question is about software download attempts from Ubuntu Software center. When I attempt to use it I get the error messages:
Failed to lock the package manager

Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time. The package indexes are currently changed by apt-get. Does this mean that SPM is active and the Software Center will not function until I change enablement between the two? If so, how do I accomplish the task?

Ubuntu Installation :: Major UI Bugs With 11.04 Upgrade

May 2, 2011

I had 10.10 set up with very flashy compiz settings and a custom theme. When I upgraded and first opened 11.04 I tried to set up my compiz how it had been before starting with a desktop cube. As I was doing this, everything gradually just fell to pieces and now I have no left side bar, no top bar, and none of my windows have toolbars or window borders. I tried restarting and it didn't change. I don't even have any way to bring up the system settings window, or to bring up terminal without restarting to command line mode.

Ubuntu :: No Session Manager Under "System/Preferences", No Startup Programs Manager

Jun 6, 2010

Hello - installed 10.04 yesterday, Had previously dabbled, trying to switch over to Ubuntu full time now. Wanted to access the session manager, but when I scroll to System/Preferences, there is no entry for it, or for the startup programs manager. Also, I'm getting the following error when attempting to open the "windows" entry: Failed to execute child process "gnome-window-properties" (No such file or directory)

Did I somehow botch something in gnome which is now leading to the absence of the session manager as well as the inability to launch the "windows" manager?

Ubuntu :: Dead After Install The CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) Application From The Software Center

Jun 10, 2011

Just got my 11.04 and tried to use some settings in Compiz. I`ve made these steps: Install the CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) application from the Software Center. If you need assistance with installing the application, consult the software installation help, or review the Ubuntu Software Center Manual.

After you have installed the program, click the power icon at the very right of the panel and select System Settings. In the Personal section, click CompizConfig Settings Manager. In the Desktop section of the CompizConfig Settings Manager, click Ubuntu Unity Plugin, and select the Experimental tab.

I`ve clicked on the left side there was something like "enable plugin" or sort of. And my launcher, and the pane on the top dissapeared! I got nothing. Just the screen. Nothing is workin. What the f>..?

Ubuntu :: No Appearance Tab In StartUp-Manager?

Mar 29, 2010

I am creating a custom distro of Ubuntu for a company, changing a few things to meet their needs. One of the things I would like to change is the splash screen, but for some reason the "appearance" tab does not appear in StartUp-Manager.

Splashy still has the bug where it can't be installed due to a conflicting package in Ubuntu, so I believe that this is the only way to do it.

Running 9.10 (the system i'm trying to change) on a dual boot configuration with 10.04 as my main OS.

Ubuntu :: Changed Graphics Resolution In STARTUP MANAGER ?

Jan 17, 2010

I just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?

The weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptom im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.

Ubuntu :: Use StartUp-Manager To Increase The Resolution Of The GRUB Menu?

I was wanting to use StartUp-Manager to increase the resolution of the GRUB menu and the boot logo screen. Changing the resolution for the GRUB menu works fine. But the Ubuntu logo that should show up during the boot process is all scrambled across the screen. I tried multiple resolutions to fix it and none of them work. How do I restore everything back to their defaults? I tried putting the numbers all back to where they where when I first ran StartUp-Manager but that didn't fix it.
