View 1 RepliesHello - installed 10.04 yesterday, Had previously dabbled, trying to switch over to Ubuntu full time now. Wanted to access the session manager, but when I scroll to System/Preferences, there is no entry for it, or for the startup programs manager. Also, I'm getting the following error when attempting to open the "windows" entry: Failed to execute child process "gnome-window-properties" (No such file or directory)
Did I somehow botch something in gnome which is now leading to the absence of the session manager as well as the inability to launch the "windows" manager?
I am creating a custom distro of Ubuntu for a company, changing a few things to meet their needs. One of the things I would like to change is the splash screen, but for some reason the "appearance" tab does not appear in StartUp-Manager.
Splashy still has the bug where it can't be installed due to a conflicting package in Ubuntu, so I believe that this is the only way to do it.
Running 9.10 (the system i'm trying to change) on a dual boot configuration with 10.04 as my main OS.
I click StartUp-Manager from the System menu password prompt the "preforming pre-configuration tasks" starts up then... nothing. no startup manager window.
here is the terminal output
Quote:
ry@ry-desktop:~$ startupmanager
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
[Code]....
When I start my system, a package manager window(like if i were installing a deb) opens.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 and I installed and messed around with startupmanager. Now I get status text when I startup, shutdown, and resume from suspend.
I have "show text during boot" disabled. And I tried turning "show boot splash" on.
How can I get the default behaviour?
I would like to run linux on windows 7 starter. Google tells me that I have to upgrade at least to home premium to have windows virtual pc, but that is not for free..besides I don t need xp, i just want to run linux..So I would like to know if there is another way, a free program/virtual machine for win 7 to run linux on.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just stupidly changed my graphics resolution in System - Preferences - Startup Manager, now i dont get a login window or anything just a black screen. I also disabled the splash but i assume this just gets rid of the ubuntu loading line thingy?
The weird thing is that the resolution was set to 640x800 or something like that in the Startup Manager as default and the laptom im using (an old Toshiba Amilo P4) supports 1024x768. the System - Preferences - Display menu wouldnt let me change any display settings which is why i was messing about here. I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.
Currently Startup manager won't show all the tabs (appearance and secuirity) how do i get access to these tabs.

There does not seem to be any Preferences in Update Manager to tweak either.
Is there some file I can edit with nano? Or maybe there's a script I can rename to not run it at startup?
I've just started using Linux and am having troubles getting various drivers to work/install i've tried to install an nvidia 32bit linux graphics driver which fails once you right click it, display/run it and the progress bar gets to the end and just comes up red saying failed (can't remember what it exactly says)
i've also tried to install my pci wireless driver, the readme that came with it is very confusing, i tried to run the autorun.sh file, which doesnt seem to-do anything. i think i got somewhere by putting in code to the terminal which i got from the readme, but no luck.
Also is their a chipset driver i have to install? as with windows, when my comp starts all the fans come on at 100% then software throttles them once in windows, wheras with ubuntu their just 100% all the time.
i've tried looking for other threads to cure my problem with no luck. But did notice alot of people ask to see lspci results, here it is..

I recently installed Linux Mint 9 and am having problems with an application that requires Java Web Starter. I was able to find and install it on my computer running Ubuntu 10.01, but can't seem to locate Java Web Starter or make it work on my Linux Mint 9 system. I tried the Java site but couldn't get it to work.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi just installed eclipse, the newewst version from the developer website of course, because the one out of the software center is more than outdated.
Now i have the problem that i don't have any icon in the starter. When i start eclipse i can right click on the icon and make it stick to the startet forever but it has no icon and i can't change it.
So my question is now: How do i add one to the starter? And i don't want to use the desktop right clicking and create a new starter variation of the solution. Firefox has no .desktop file for it's icon in the starter either.
P.S.: For the futurue version a right click on the starter->add or right click on and icon->edit
To understand, I have two partitions in my hard disk laptop, one for data and the other one for windows xp and I also have a extern usb hard disk, this one for ubuntu. What I want to do is to boot Windows with GRUB starter without having to connect the USB hard disk (the hard disk where is ubuntu installed) to laptop. Because when I try to do it without USB hard disk connected, my laptop say "ERROR" and I would like don't be changing from grub starter to windows starter and from windows starter to grub starter each time I want to be with linux or windows isn't the usb disk. Is there any way to relocate the grub files to the internal disk laptop and start up Windows without the external USB hard disk (that has Ubuntu installed). Can I do that all necessary to carry out when I'll start up my laptop (for start up with linux and windows) be found in the data partition laptop hard disk and don't be found in the usb disk? How can I do that replace?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was wanting to use StartUp-Manager to increase the resolution of the GRUB menu and the boot logo screen. Changing the resolution for the GRUB menu works fine. But the Ubuntu logo that should show up during the boot process is all scrambled across the screen. I tried multiple resolutions to fix it and none of them work. How do I restore everything back to their defaults? I tried putting the numbers all back to where they where when I first ran StartUp-Manager but that didn't fix it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed a new program called the "Android Notifier Desktop 0.2.1" and within the program it say to use the systems startup manager to start the program with every system boot.I have no idea where to begin looking for the programs file and main start up link.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 Beta using
sudo update-manager -d
I used Startup-Manager to change the boot default to the last item on the list. I noticed that it was always booting to the first item on the list. As an experiment, I chose one item before last. Now it boots to the last item on the list.
I noticed that grub boot menu shows latest linux kernel as first followed by the recovery version, then there is a sub-menu for previous versions (there were 2 in my case if I choose the previous versions. After that there is memtest and another memtest (serial) and finally the Win 7. I noticed that the StartUp-Manager does not show the sub-menu. It shows all the 7 menus. I think this is a bug in StartUp-Manager in 11.04. Also, I downloaded dropbox .deb and tried to install with Software Center. It gave me an error.
However,
sudo dpkg -i nautilus-dropbox_0.6.7_i386.deb
did the job.
I had to the same with skype install. Software Center did install what were in its list. I tried vlc and emacs.
T=I checked the file permissions of ~/.cache/software-center
Using Startup-Manager to change your startup screens, etc. can leave you with no gui on next boot:URL...
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe Synaptec startup-manager for ubuntu 10.4 is horrible. It gives you a laundry list of kernels and operating systems and asks you to pick one. I had a gnome (?) boot loader app on another system and it had a slick gui which let you order the list, inspect the vmlinuz and initrd for existence, make suggestions for appropriate entries, had an advanced mode for chain loading, etc. It had ~40 features. This one has exactly 7 and looks like a high school compsci 101 homework assignment [ ].

I think there are two different images (namely i386 and ia64) for intel-based systems, right? Which one should I download for my Intel Core 2 Duo? Is this a 64-bit architecture? Should I use amd64?

I have already found intructions on how to dual boot the way I want, and how to change the wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter. I also already have experiance with Ubuntu, Unity 3D, and Windows XP.What would be the best solution?

I installed Startup Manager but the appearance and security tabs are missing. I really want to be able to change the resolution of the splash screen cause it looks all pixelated and I want to have the splash screen that 9.10 had.
I tried reinstalling and restarting but the issue remains. I know its somewhat functional because I am able to change the seconds that grub takes but when I try to change the resolution of the purple ubuntu startup screen it looks like it tries to change it but it fails.
I accidentally set the grub startup manager's time to 0 secs and windows xp as the default OS. (I have windows xp and ubuntu on this laptop.)
Now when I turn on or restart my computer, it boots up straight to windows, I can no longer access the grub boot selection screen or my ubuntu OS.
I've just installed linux on my Acer Aspire One netbook, (10.10 netbook edition) I've done it as a duel boot with Windows 7 Starter as i want to use Linux, family want to use windows. But ideally i would want the pc to boot up as Windows then say if i hit a certain key on bootup it would swap it over to Linux from windows before it starts to load?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am semi new to the embedded linux scene. I dont use UNIX much but I have played around with it and know how powerful it is. Currently just finished a degree in Computer System Engineering in the UK and have a whole summer break to mess around doing something. So I have decided to start a project I've been planning.
Starting the project, first of all I need to find a good handheld system I can work on. This is where I'll be importing the code onto/applications. At the moment all I want it to do is boot and run a distro of linux, but in the future I am going to be working on making it 3/4G and wirelessly able.
What I need:
-Size is roughly around the same size as a ipod maybe, or smaller.
-Needs a nice screen, nothing massive but needs to be easily readable.
-Text entry is needed, but im sure a few buttons can do it.. keypad would be really really nice though.
-A 3.5mm audio jack (or something similar to plug headphones into) is needed or it needs to have the capiblity to install this.
-Wifi/3G support, needs to be able to support these in the future or able for me to hack them in.
-Rechargeable powersource.
-Cost, nothing mega expensive !
I'm running some vm's in FC12 with kvm-qemu and using virt machine manager. I'd like to have some ports automatically forward on startup and be able to add redirections on the fly. Redirection on the fly is talked about here, but I am getting lost on what should be basic instructions.[URL]
As far as startup, In the past I just ran qemu from the cli and manually specified redirection with redir. I can't figure out how to do it with The virt machine manager which I am using to start my VM's now. I do not want the guests to see the host. From cli startup without virt machine manager, it looked like this: qemu -m 256 -hda vm.img -redir tcp:5555::80 -redir tcp:5556::445 &
today while using 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64 bit I decided to do something about the low resolution boot screen, I've seen the bugs thread but I thought startup manager would be the way to go Anyway I changed the resolution and the bits to the highest they would go I rebooted and I got the normal coloured boot screen but no logo just text, then I tried disabling text and enabling the boot logo Then I rebooted and the same thing again Then I removed startup manager and the whole boot screen turned bright pink and still had a text logo!
